OCEAN MINING
"... in the ocean depths, there are mines of zinc, iron, silver and gold which would be quite easy to exploit."
Jules Verne (1870)
"First Move Made to Mine Mineral Riches of Seabed" (New York Times, December 21, 1997) and " Goudmijnen onder zee" (de Volkskrant January 31, 1998 ) ... such were recent page one headlines in newspapers in New York and Amsterdam . The articles described the move by Nautilus Minerals Corporation, a Sydney based company registered in Papua New Guinea , to lay claim to almost 4000 km of PNG's seabed for the purpose of mining polymetallic sulfides (copper, zinc, lead, silver, gold). At the same time, American interests are moving fast to be among the first into what some see to be a new opportunity. What are these people after? There are about 150 sites of presently or recently active hydrothermal venting on the sea floor and more are being found every year by marine geologists, geophysicists and biologists conducting basic research on a fundamental Earth process. This is one important way that heat is ventilated from the interior. The vented hot water, at temperatures as high as 420 C but more commonly 350 C, carries dissolved in it high concentrations of metals, reduced sulfur and other elements that are precipitated when it encounters the 2

Studies in Marine Geology and Geophysics focus on understanding how our earth works by investigating... The structure of the earth beneath the oceans The processes that shape the seafloor The history of ocean circulation patterns and climate change preserved in seafloor sediments The interactions between geological and biological systems Approach to the challenge Marine geologists approach these problems through studies of oceanic rocks and sediments. Marine geophysicists are primarily concerned with the application of gravity, magnetics, heat flow, and seismic methods to study the structure of the earth beneath the oceans.Within the Joint Program, there are geologists, geochemists, and geophysicists who conduct research on a wide variety of topics, including:
  • Dynamics of convection in the mantle that drives the motion of tectonic plates Tectonic, volcanic, and hydrothermal activity at mid-ocean ridges, and the structure of the oceanic crust Coastal processes and the structure of continental margins Past ocean circulation patterns and climates Interactions of continental and oceanic geologic processes
Interdisciplinary work Investigators from different disciplines also often work together with the goal of understanding the interactions between earth's processes, the oceans, and ecosystems. Geological processes influence the chemistry of the oceans and impact the distribution of organisms. Similarly, biological processes affect the chemistry of the oceans and sediments, and can even alter the composition of oceanic crust.

GMT is a free, public-domain collection of ~60 UNIX tools that allow users to manipulate (x,y) and (x,y,z) data sets (including filtering, trend fitting, gridding, projecting, etc.) and produce Encapsulated PostScript File (EPS) illustrations ranging from simple x-y plots through contour maps to artificially illuminated surfaces and 3-D perspective views in black and white, gray tone, hachure patterns, and 24-bit color. The Coastal Geology Group (CGG) conducts marine geologic research in the Hawaiian Islands with the goal of improving our understanding of coastal processes and coastal records of environmental change.

GSHHS - A Global Self-consistent, Hierarchical, High-resolution Shoreline Database
GSHHS is a high-resolution shoreline data set amalgamated from two data bases in the public domain. The data have undergone extensive processing and are free of internal inconsistencies such as erratic points and crossing segments. The shorelines are constructed entirely from hierarchically arranged closed polygons. The data can be used to simplify data searches and data selections, or to study the statistical characteristics of shorelines and land-masses. It comes with access software and routines to facilitate decimation based on a standard line-reduction algorithm. Availability of the GSHHS data (v1.2 May 18, 1999)
  • Download GSHHS data
The link above is to the NGDC server, GSHHS data are also available for direct download from the SOEST server . Please see the readme.txt file for full documentation. The latest files for version 1.2 were created May 18, 1999. The new version corrects previous errors for Win32 systems and is Y2K and POSIX compliant.

Marine Geology and Geophysics Cluster Group The marine geology and geophysics cluster group comprises a diverse group of earth scientists interested in the physics, chemistry, and geological evolution of materials forming the seafloor. While this research varies greatly in purpose, setting and methods, there are some common themes. Fisher, Silver, Gill, and Moore are interested in the nature and influence of fluid flow through earth's crust below the oceans, from hydrothermal circulation where the crust is young, to tectonically-induced flows where old seafloor is destroyed at oceanic trenches. Gill, Griggs, Silver, and Moore all study deformation of geological materials in places where the geology is dynamic, where the crust is being changed (squeezed, uplifted, subducted, or worn away) by tectonic and shoreline processes.
