This version of the Antarctic Research Facility web site and database was developed through an informal cooperative program between the Florida State University School of Information Studies (LIS) and the Antarctic Research Facility (ARF). LIS student interns, under the guidance of faculty in both departments, designed and constructed the website and database with standard applications utilized in LIS undergraduate courses. This cooperative venture between the two departments gives students "real-life" web site and database design, programming, and maintenance experience while providing the Antarctic Research Facility with a web-site and database that will continue to expand as future LIS interns take on new projects. USGS Science Center for Coastal and Marine Geology Located in Woods Hole, MA
The Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Geology Team is one of three marine teams that conduct research within the USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program. The team is located on WHOI 's Quissett Campus. The team has a staff of about 100, including 24 research scientists and 75 scientific and administrative support staff. USGS earth scientists explore and study many aspects of the underwater areas between shorelines and the deep ocean, off the U.S. East Coast, the Gulf of Mexico, and in parts of the Caribbean and Great Lakes. A JavaScript will rotate an image of USGS at work every time the page is refreshed. News To help in assessing the health of this fishery, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Coastal Services Center have started a 2-year habitat-mapping program. The first phase of acoustic mapping was completed by USGS Woods Hole Science Center staff during a 4-week effort in March and April.

Coastal and Marine Issues
More than one-half of all Americans live within an hour's drive of an ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, or the Great Lakes. Our coastal oceans are a vital resource for transportation, commerce, and recreation. They provide food, energy, and minerals for the entire Nation; on a global scale, they harbor critical biologic habitats and drive global climate. Changes within the coastal and marine environment, whether naturally occurring or human induced, can endanger our quality of life, threaten property, pose risk to fragile environments, and affect livelihoods. Catastrophic events such as hurricanes, earthquakes, landslides, and tsunamis cost the Nation more than $30 billion per year and have serious economic consequences for coastal communities. Wetland loss increases the threat of flooding, decreases water quality, and threatens wildlife. Degraded sea-floor and coastal habitats are failing to support fisheries. Coastal and offshore aquifers are subject to seawater intrusion and nutrient contamination. The coastal oceans have become a repository for sewage, chemicals, and toxics dumped or discharged offshore, or brought downstream by rivers. All 35 coastal States and the island territories are experiencing coastal erosion and are threatened by the rise in relative sea level; many have replenished eroded beaches at great cost. The management challenge faced by all coastal communities is to balance the competing needs of citizens, government, industry, and the environment.

The World Data Center for
encourages active exchange among scientists through international cooperation. The ocean floor is a natural archive of information on how Earth works and has worked for millions of years. The composition and structure of seafloor sediment and underlying basement crust yield important clues to the evolution of life, ocean-atmosphere dynamics, and the tectonic processes that shaped Earth's continents and ocean basins as we know them today. The World Data Center for MGG, Boulder manages all types of data from the ocean floor including underway geophysical measurements and derived gridded data sets, and descriptions and analyses of geologic samples. Data are contributed by sources from around the world and were originally collected for a variety of purposes, including academic research, international and interdisciplinary scientific projects, mineral resource evaluations, defense, and environmental baseline studies. Data are available at cost of reproduction, or free on exchange. Many data sets are also available for free download.

Marine Geology: Research Beneath the Sea
Scope of Marine Geology
The Marine Geology program of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) strives to increase our understanding of the geology of the lands covered by water, just as the Survey's program on land has, since 1879, worked to understand the geology of U.S. lands ashore. Marine geologists compile data about the topography or shape of the ocean floors, the distribution and type of bottom sediments, the composition and structure of the underlying rocks, and the geologic processes that have been at work throughout the seafloor's history. Using this information, marine geologists assess the mineral resources of the seafloor, predict the location of certain hazards, investigate marine geologic processes, and, in a more aesthetic sense, add to our overall scientific understanding of the Earth.
