    Marine Biology
In general, this introductory course examines the history and development of the field of marine biology, the types of organisms that inhabit the marine environment, the types of habitats and ecological systems in the seas and oceans, and the use of the marine environment by humans and the problems and issues associated with that use. There are no formal prerequisites for this course, although students who have not had a first-year, college-level biology course may have to spend a little extra time becoming familiar with some material. Some chemistry and physics would also be helpful, but are not required to understand the material in this course.
    Objectives

After completing this course, students will:
    • Understand the scope of the field of marine biology, both scientifically and within the context of society in general.
    • Learn about the major groups of organisms that inhabit the marine environment, including: taxonomic relationships, life histories, and adaptations to specific kinds of habitats

The Emphasis in Marine Biology provides education and training for students planning to enter marine professions with the BS degree or advanced degrees. At the bachelor level students will be qualified for research technician positions in university and government laboratories and positions involving marine biological research and resource development and management. Government agencies employing marine biologists include the U.S. National Marine Fisheries Service, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, state fish and game departments, water quality agencies and local planning and management agencies. The private sector may also offer positions in such areas as environmental studies and the seafood industry. Marine biologists with graduate degrees normally have a wider range of employment opportunities and higher salaries. These include positions at community colleges and, with the PhD, at universities. High level research positions with government and private research institutions also normally require an advanced degree.

The marine biology major is designed for students who wish to prepare for positions in the area of marine or aquatic biology or who plan graduate study in these fields. The standard courses for the major are offered on the university campus, with the specialized courses being taken through the Dauphin Island Sea Laboratory (DISL) near Mobile, Alabama. Students interested in this major should consult early with the chair of the department concerning courses, prerequisites, special arrangements, and costs. Requirements include a prescribed minor in chemistry and ancillary course work in computer science, mathematics, and physics. Who should take Marine Biology? Why take this course? Marine Biology integrates field and laboratory experiences with what is taught in class. Many days during the term involve heading out to the field to collect data during a low tide, a lecture in the classroom, and work in the laboratory studying collected organisms. The training in general research methods, as well as field and laboratory techniques prepare students well for further undergraduate research, graduate work, or jobs. Furthermore, the small size of the course, and the long days allow for close interactions with professors and graduate students. A past student had the following to say about the course:
Thom Young Topics Covered Marine Biology is a comprehensive introduction to the flora and fauna of the marine environment. The sections of Marine Biology are taught sequentially with each topic covering between 1 and 2 weeks. During each section, students are taught by experts in each subject area and are able to interact closely with OSU faculty and graduate students at the Science Center.
