Related Category: Biology, General marine biology, study of ocean plants and animals and their ecological relationships. Marine organisms may be classified (according to their mode of life) as nektonic, planktonic, or benthic. Nektonic animals are those that swim and migrate freely, e.g., adult fishes whales , and squid . Planktonic organisms, usually very small or microscopic, have little or no power of locomotion and merely drift or float in the water. Benthic organisms live on the sea bottom and include sessile forms (e.g., sponges oysters , and corals ), creeping organisms (e.g., crabs and snails ), and burrowing animals (e.g., many clams and worms ). Seafloor areas called hydrothermal vents , with giant tube worms and many other unusual life forms, have been intensively studied by marine biologists in recent years. The distribution of marine organisms depends on the chemical and physical properties of seawater (temperature, salinity, and dissolved nutrients), on ocean currents (which carry oxygen to subsurface waters and disperse nutrients, wastes, spores, eggs, larvae, and plankton), and on penetration of light. Photosynthetic organisms (plants, algae, and cyanobacteria), the primary sources of food, exist only in the photic, or euphotic, zone (to a depth of about 300 ft/90 m), where light is sufficient for

CDC/Dr. Thomas Hooten When you think of life on earth, your first thoughts are probably about familiar animals, your pet dog or cat, the bird you see in the tree outside your window. But that is really only a small sample of all the types of life on our planet, which include plants, bacteria, fungi, and animals in a vast array of body forms and types. Biology is the study of life, individual organisms, their communities, and the systems, cells, and processes that make up living matter.

NOAA/Department of Commerce Oceans cover two-thirds of the earth's surface. And while their surfaces often look smooth, the oceans are teeming with life. Oceans provide animal habitat all the way down to the ocean floor. Since oceans are, on average, over 2.5 miles deep, this means that they contain 99.5 percent of our planet's livable habitat. Within that vast space, the oceans are filled with a huge range of microscopic organisms, animals, and plant life.

    What is Oceanography?
(Thanks to: International Oceanographic Foundation "Oceanography" is a broad field in which many sciences are focused on the common goal of understanding the oceans. Since the ocean comprises the largest ecosystem on earth, study of the ocean ecosystems is critical to understanding man's effects on the biosphere. Persons specializing in Botany, cartography, chemistry, engineering, geography, geology, geophysics, limnology, mathematics, medicine, meteorology, and zoology all play roles in expanding our knowledge of marine environments. "Marine biology" is the study of life in the world's oceans, seas, bays and estuaries (in other words, in salt water), but requires an understanding of freshwater systems as well. It includes the study of all living marine organisms (from bacteria to whales) and their physical marine environment. The field of oceanography is usually broken down into sub-disciplines, including:

The Department's strategic location on one of the Gulf's most productive bay systems and Galveston's semitropical climate provide MARB students and faculty year-round access to a variety of intriguing and environmentally-sensitive habitats comprising estuarine and marine ecosystems. Students receive extensive exposure and invaluable training in the conservation and management of Bay and Gulf ecosystems through intensive field work in salt marshes, oyster reefs, seagrass meadows, rocky intertidal zones, open surf, and coastal waters off Galveston.
MARB's diverse faculty and low student: professor ratio provide undergraduates with unique opportunities to participate in world-class research programs targeting a variety of marine related concerns. The MARB faculty consists of 12 full time professors and two professors emeritus whose research interests include molecular biology, microbiology, genetics, anatomy, taxonomy, physiology, behavior and ecology of estuarine/marine flora and fauna.
