Biology, Marine Biology and Environmental Science Majors
Biology, marine biology, and environmental science majors investigate the interconnected processes that shape the living world. The Department of Biology, Marine Biology and Environmental Science is housed in a large, new building offering modern teaching and research laboratories, a spacious wet-lab with running seawater, several greenhouses and state-of-the-art instrumentation for cell and molecular biology. The Department offers the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees in biology, marine biology, and environmental science. Minors are also offered in biology, environmental biology, environmental science and horticulture. The Department has a very active program for undergraduate research, and students are encouraged to join an ongoing project as early as their first year.
Biology
Since the life sciences are increasingly interdisciplinary, biology majors can take a wide range of courses in the following general areas: cell and molecular biology; microbiology; physiology and developmental biology; animal behavior; botany/horticulture; and ecology. Students prepare for graduate study and careers in these fields, as well as the health sciences, through lectures and labs, independent research and internships. Any student who wishes to pursue a career in medicine, dentistry or veterinary medicine should contact his/her advisor immediately to ensure appropriate course planning. Research is an integral part of the biology curriculum, and biology majors are encouraged to participate in ongoing research in areas that include: evolutionary genetics, cell biology, developmental biology, neurobiology and ecology.

Course Aims The course aims to provide students with:
  • a set of transferable skills appropriate to a prospective researcher: Bibliographic and scholarship skills, Data analysis and statistics; Research skills (planning, experimental design, working as a team member, reporting (including scientific writing skills), presenting, ethics, field and laboratory safety, legislation); ICT skills (word processing, data entry from spreadsheets to automated electronic data capture, data storage and manipulation, statistical packages, graphics, presentation); Experience of the research environment through participation in research group seminars and discussion in a highly research-active and large multidisciplinary institute; Planning research in Applied Ecology and Environmental Biology; Ecological mathematics and modelling. Bioinformatics; Entrepreneurship; Time management and achieving set goals. an opportunity to study selected aspects of Ecology and Environmental Biology to an advanced level - Students select one module from a series - lectures and tutorials act as foundation material for students in the M.Res. course and they will also carry out personal study/scholarship in the subject areas and will prepare review essays on each subject. Recommended topic modules for each student will be in relevant subjects that they will probably not have studied in detail at undergraduate level, with emphasis on mathematical ecology and population modelling at an advanced level.
