The School of Ocean Sciences at the University of Wales, Bangor has 46 years experience of teaching at postgraduate level, and excellent teaching and research facilities for the study of the marine biology. Undergraduate teaching was graded excellent in the last Teaching Quality Assessment, and research was graded 4* in the Research Assessment Exercise. NERC has designated the School as a Centre of Excellence in Coastal Seas, Marine Biology and Biological Oceanography.
The MSc course in Marine Biology is one of a suite of 5 focussed MSc courses in marine science run within the School. New students on this course are inducted to the University and School via an introductory course consisting of orientation through site tours, excursions and social events, and 3 weeks of quantifying biological variability, learning Information Technology, and practising presentation skills. Pre-sessional English language training courses are also available for overseas students.
The MSc course is housed in a fully serviced and dedicated postgraduate suite. The School is located on the shores of the Menai Strait which separates the Isle of Anglesey from the mainland. The Menai Strait is a proposed Statutory Marine Resource and EU Special Area of Conservation and there are unspoilt marine environments relatively close by.

The Center for Marine Resource Studies is exploring ways to improve the sustainability of exploited marine resources and the protection of the near pristine coral reef ecosystem at South Caicos. Our research monitors the stocks of lobster and conch, the condition of coral reefs and the populations of reef fish. Our goal is to provide the local community and tourism developers with advice that will help sustain the traditional fishing economy as well as minimize the environmental impacts of growing tourism on the terrestrial and marine environments.

Biology
College of Science and Engineering Undergraduate Programs
The Department of Biology provides a broad range of quality programs to meet student needs. Coursework ranges from introductory biology, botany, zoology, and microbiology to specialized courses in molecular genetics, microbial metabolism, plant ecology, ornithology, limnology, and neurosciences. To aid the student with directed interests, the department has grouped the courses into areas of concentrations described under Degrees and Programs Offered. Further information concerning these may be found on separate information sheets. Students entering any of the programs in Biology should have a sound background in high school chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Students majoring in the general Biology degree program are required to complete 57 units in the major. In addition to the biological science courses, it includes basic and organic chemistry and general physics courses. This program is designed to give breadth rather than depth in Biology. To accomplish this, advanced coursework is distributed in genetics, physiology, ecology, cell or molecular biology, taxonomy or morphology, and evolutionary biology. Electives are also required.

94. Marine Biology---The Revenge
High School Daze. First, remember that marine biology is really biology that Of course, having said that, if you truly feel that you are on the wrong
http://www.id.ucsb.edu/lovelab/revenge.html
You know that you are not going to be a marine biologist in order to talk to dolphins or make obscene amounts of money. Rather, you realize that you are driven by a higher and purer calling. You are like some 6th Century European shepherd who sees an image of the Emperor Justinian on the rear end of a ewe and decides to carry the animal on his back to Constantinople to show the Emperor. The fact that on his way he is waylaid by Lombards, sold into slavery, and winds up as a tax preparer in northern Italy should not in any way dissuade you from your own personal crusade. Now, however, that sinking sensation has come over you, as a wee voice says: What should I do to prepare myself for what lies ahead? Particularly disconcerting is that the wee voice sounds exactly like Carmen Miranda in The Gangs All Here. How Do I Become A Marine Biologist? Almost everyone who wants to go into marine biology can do it. You can take tons of science in high school, you can take the bare minimum; you can get your scuba certification before you are toilet trained, you can never learn to dive; you can go to small colleges where you are treated like a long-lost child, you can go to huge universities where professors spit on you for fun; you can go to colleges that specialize in marine biology, you can go to ones that just have a few, or even no, such classes; you can go to college when you are 18, you can go when you are a ton older. In the long run, this stuff sort of evens out. Are some of these paths better than others? You bet. Is there only one path to take? No, no, Nanette.

http://courses.mbl.edu/FIR/home.htm
ARCHIVE Frontiers in Reproduction (FIR) is a laboratory and lecture course designed for scientists in training who are interested in improving their basic conceptual knowledge and methodological skills to pursue a research career in Reproductive Biology. The FIR course was started in 1998 under the direction of Joan Hunt (The University of Kansas Medical Center), Kelly Mayo (Northwestern University) and Jerry Schatten (The University of Pittsburgh). The founding directors were succeeded by Asgi Fazleabas (The University of Illinois at Chicago), Pat Hunt (Case Western Reserve University) and Teresa Woodruff (Northwestern University). FIR is divided into three major sections of 2 weeks duration. Each section consists of lectures from resident faculty and other invited speakers, discussions and informal seminars, laboratory exercises, demonstrations and one-on-one tutorials. The first section is currently directed by Mario Ascoli (The University of Iowas) and covers signal transduction and gene expression in Reproductive Endocrinology. The second section, directed by David Albertini, (The University of Kansas Medical Center) is focused on gametogenesis, fertilization, cloning and stem cells. The third section is directed by Franco De Mayo (Baylor College of Medicine) and it covers transgenic technology, cell-cell interactions in reproductive tissues during development as well as Embryology and Implantation Biology.

Course Code: B1041 H1039 The Marine Science major aims to provide specialised knowledge enabling students to understand the complex physical and biological interactions within the ocean, to gain an ability to assess the state of the marine environment, and to be able to predict the consequences of future disturbances to this environment. The major draws heavily on units within the Division of Science and Engineering, and will provide skills to apply the knowledge gained towards environmental management, with an emphasis on coastal systems. A number of units deal specifically with coastal management issues, oceanography and marine pollution. Students also have the opportunity to take certain TAFE units as electives towards their degree. These include boat handling and SCUBA diving which will enhance the practical skills needed in the marine science field.
