Program Description
Marine science is the interdisciplinary study of the oceans, estuaries and inland seas of the world. The major at Jacksonville University emphasizes the multi-disciplined approach necessary to understand the marine environment. Using a core of biology courses, the major includes elements of chemistry, physics and physical science, as well as life sciences. Students may focus their studies in one or more of these areas by careful selection of their elective courses. We encourage students to gain valuable hands-on experience through internships and research with the faculty. Students who wish to participate in undergraduate research may do so by registering for Research Participation or Independent Study courses with particular faculty members. In addition, some students work closely with faculty as laboratory assistants. This experience is particularly helpful for students who wish to teach. Marine science prepares majors for both employment in both the public and private sectors and for post-baccalaureate study at graduate or professional schools. Curriculum Overview
Academic Preparation

Students who plan to pursue a marine science major should be well prepared in the sciences. High school courses should include mathematics through trigonometry, biology, chemistry and physics. Secondary school courses in marine biology or oceanography may provide additional background, but are not required.

CAREERS IN MARINE BIOLOGY What Marine Biologists Do Marine Biology as a Career More recently there has been an increased awareness among citizens, as well as among governmental and corporate decision-makers, that environmental studies will result in recognizable benefits to the public and that they deserve to be supported. Examples of problems that prompted this awareness are unfortunately familiar: serious reductions in stocks of harvested species, major oil spills, human-originated debris washing up on beaches, and major environmental problems arising in heavily impacted estuaries like Chesapeake Bay. Conflicting needs and limited resources quite clearly necessitate a more educated management of the environment. At present, the job market is still tight, but the prospects for well-trained professionals in Marine Biology are on the rise. Marine Biology at the College of Charleston To be professionally successful in marine biology, it is advisable to attend graduate school after you complete your undergraduate education. Perhaps unexpectedly, a majority of marine biologists had no training in marine biology as undergraduates; they did not obtain their Bachelor's degrees in Marine Biology, Marine Science, or Oceanography. Typically, a marine biologist received a Bachelor's degree in Biology. A concentration in marine biology usually began in graduate school. Each Marine Biology major completes a minimum of 34 semester hours in biology in addition to courses in chemistry, geology, physics, mathematics, and the liberal arts. The first biology course (required of all majors) is a two-semester foundations course which serves to introduce students to the underlying principles of biology. Following the introductory course, individual programs of study are planned by students and their advisors. Some students also have the opportunity to do a research project for academic credit before graduating.

by John E. Reynolds III - Eckerd College and U.S. Marine Mammal Commission Reference Books Reference Articles Information Sheets and Packets Sea Grant Programs ... Teaching Materials What is marine mammal science? There are about 100 species of aquatic or marine mammals that depend on fresh water or the ocean for part or all of their life. These species include pinnipeds, which are seals, sea lions, fur seals and walrus; cetaceans, which are baleen and toothed whales, ocean and river dolphins, and porpoises; sirenians, which are manatees and dugongs; and some carnivores, such as sea otters and polar bears. Marine mammal scientists try to understand these animals' genetic, systematic, and evolutionary relationships; population structure; community dynamics; anatomy and physiology; behavior and sensory abilities; parasites and diseases; geographic and microhabitat distributions; ecology; management; and conservation.

Warren D. Dolphin, Program Coordinator The biological sciences at Iowa State University are organized into 20 departments and programs. These can be grouped into the basic sciences, agricultural sciences, and veterinary sciences. Well over 200 faculty consider themselves life scientists and most teach courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Such a large faculty group provides many opportunities for students to learn from some of the national leaders in biological research and teaching and to participate in exciting, meaningful research projects that explore frontiers in the life sciences. Few other universities have such a wealth of faculty expertise available to undergraduate students. Undergraduate Study
Of the courses taught by the biology program, Biol 109 is a general presentation of selected biological topics designed primarily for students not majoring in the basic biological sciences. Biol 123, also designed for the non-major, is intended to be an introduction to topics in environmental biology. A unified biology core serves the various majors in the life sciences. This core consists of six integrated courses with labs that explore the basic principles of the biological sciences. The first year (Biol 201, 202) provides a broad introduction to the nature of life. The second year (Biol 301, 302) provides an integrated foundation in the principles of genetics, cell biology, and elementary biochemistry. The third year (Biol 312, 303) provides an ecological and evolutionary perspective.

Nature of the Work Working Conditions Employment Training, Other Qualifications, and Advancement ... Sources of Additional Information
Significant Points
  • A Ph.D. degree usually is required for independent research, but a master’s degree is sufficient for some jobs in applied research or product development; a bachelor’s degree is adequate for some nonresearch jobs.
  • Doctoral degree holders face considerable competition for independent research positions, particularly in universities; holders of bachelor’s or master’s degrees in biological science can expect better opportunities in nonresearch positions.
  • Biotechnological research and development will continue to drive employment growth.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Biological scientists study living organisms and their relationship to their environment. They research problems dealing with life processes. Most specialize in some area of biology such as zoology (the study of animals) or microbiology (the study of microscopic organisms). ( Medical scientists , whose work is closely related to that of biological scientists, are discussed elsewhere in the Handbook Biological scientists who work in applied research or product development use knowledge provided by basic research to develop new drugs and treatments, increase crop yields, and protect and clean up the environment. They usually have less autonomy than basic researchers to choose the emphasis of their research, relying instead on market-driven directions based on the firm’s products and goals. Biological scientists doing applied research and product development in private industry may be required to describe their research plans or results to nonscientists who are in a position to veto or approve their ideas, and they must understand the potential cost of their work and its impact on business. Scientists increasingly are working as part of teams, interacting with engineers, scientists of other disciplines, business managers, and technicians. Some biological scientists also work with customers or suppliers and manage budgets.

MSc in Oceanography General Course Information
The Oceanography Masters degree is a multidisciplinary course of instruction and research. It offers the chance to broaden the science background of an undergraduate degree, while allowing advanced level specialisation in one or more aspects of the field chosen. Since Oceanography is not widely undertaken at undergraduate level, the Masters course is a conversion course, providing background material. The Masters degree is often taken by students prior to commencement of a PhD, particularly those graduates with no previous experience in Ocean and Earth Science. Other students choose to study for a Masters to augment their undergraduate qualifications prior to a career in the marine sector. The Masters courses offered with the Graduate School of National Oceanography Centre, Southampton are fully modular, allowing individuals to choose pathways through the course that provide academic or more vocational training, depending on the student's needs. The full Programme Specification document can be found here
Introduction to the MSc Programme Structure
There are several routes through our MSc Oceanography programme, depending on whether a student wishes to maintain some multidiscipliniarity, or whether a student is looking for an emphasis towards possible specialisation.
