Marine Biology Science is the systematic discovery of knowledge about the natural world, and marine science is the general term for research conducted in oceans and coastal or inland waters connected to the sea. Marine biology is a little harder to define. Marine biology cuts across many fields of study and covers many subjects. As a result, a marine biologist may specialize in such areas as marine ecology, physiology, anatomy, botany, or fisheries. Marine biology can also include applied areas of study, such as studying the effects of toxic chemicals on living organisms or other human impacts on the marine environment. Marine Biologist Hi, my name is Greg Boland and I am a marine biologist working with the Minerals Management Service. A marine biologist is someone who, in some way, studies, observes, protects, or manages marine organisms, be they plant or animal. I study marine fish populations and coral reefs and can call myself a marine biologist. If someone has a degree in biology and manages a marine wildlife preserve and he or she is concerned with protection of marine organisms there, then he or she is also a marine biologist.

http://www.dolphintrainer.com/career_guide.htm
Introduction This website is produced and written by working marine mammal professionals who care for and train dolphins, whales, seals, sea lions, walruses and other marine mammal species. Depending upon our specific job duties and our host facilities’ preferences, we may be called trainers, animal care specialists, keepers, naturalists, mammalogists or various other titles. When first starting out we may be sub-classified as assistant or apprentice . After years of hard work and progress we may earn new titles denoting higher levels of achievement and authority, e.g., senior, lead, supervisor, manager, curator or director . For the sake of simplicity we will generally just refer to all of these "hands on" marine mammal professionals as trainers. As marine mammal trainers we are often asked about our animals, their training, anatomy, physiology, natural history, etc. Probably the most frequently asked questions, however, are about our jobs and how we got them. People are naturally fascinated by these engaging animals and many want to know more about working with them. "What does a marine mammal trainer really do?" "How can I become a trainer?" These are just two of the most popular questions we get about this subject. From the very beginning, one of our primary reasons for producing this website was to provide some answers to these frequently asked questions in one easy to access location. We also wanted to offer some valuable resources, references and our own personal tips and insights that may help people who are interested in this field as a possible career choice.

Biology - The Global Science
The study of biology is the study of life itself. It is the study of organisms and how they interact with their environment; it is the study of genes and how they are inherited from one generation to the next; it is the study of physiology and development; it is the study of single cells and of single-celled organisms; and it is the study of how evolution has moulded the behaviour, ecology, development, and morphology of the organisms that inhabit the earth. Biology is the study of the physical and biological processes that affect the life and death of genes, cells, individuals, populations, species, and ecosystems. As such, biology can be termed the global science. The Fundamental Courses The Biology Department's eight foundation courses in the first two years of study lead to a large selection of advanced courses in subjects such as conservation biology, molecular genetics, behavioural ecology, developmental and cell biology, animal behaviour, fish and fisheries, plant ecology, marine mammals, and evolution. In addition to preparing students for programmes in biology, the first and second-year courses provide the foundation for programmes in biochemistry, microbiology/immunology, and neuroscience.

A Career in Polar Marine Biology
Because we know so little about the polar marine ecosystems, the most natural way to develop a career in Polar Marine Biology is through graduate study with investigators such as those on this cruise. However, there are many other ways to get involved in these activities. For example, Sandra Parker, Dr. Detrich’s Technician, joined his laboratory 15 years ago because she was intrigued by the opportunity to conduct both laboratory- and field-based research on polar marine organisms that live under extreme conditions. “I was really excited by the chance to work in Antarctica and contribute to our understanding of this absolutely unique ecosystem. Frankly, I had never thought about going to, much less working in, Antarctica until I saw the posting for Dr. Detrich’s Technician position.” Another route to developing a career in Polar Marine Biology is to volunteer to join a research program at your university. Many undergraduates have experienced an epiphany while on such projects and gone on to develop careers in various polar fields. “Antarctica does that to you,” says Sandra. “Each time I go to Palmer Station (now eight), I am overwhelmed by the natural beauty and I feel that I am making a positive impact in polar science.”

  • Why does Bloomsburg University offer a Bachelor's Degree in Biology with a Marine Biology Option and not simply a Marine Biology Degree?
The Marine Biology Program at Bloomsburg University is designed to provide maximum career flexibility. The Program is built around a solid core of courses in the fundamentals of biology. Granting the degree in Biology communicates that the student has all the preparation that any generic biology program would provide. Granting a specialization in Marine Biology communicates that the student has additional focused preparation in the marine sciences. That students are broadly trained in fundamentals, as well as being specifically trained, is of crucial importance to potential employers, graduate schools, and professional schools.
  • How much time will I spend at the Marine Science Center in Virginia?
Courses in Marine Science are offered during the summer, when students have the flexibility to devote their full attention to detailed studies of the oceans, and when it is more pleasant to be in the water. Students in the Marine Biology Option are required to spend the equivalent of one summer semester at the Marine Science Center. Most students spend more. The remainder of the time is spent at the main campus of Bloomsburg University taking supportive classes in the sciences, and general education classes.

Oceanography/Marine-Related Careers Education is Key Start in High School While there are some opportunities in marine-related fields for those who do not continue their education beyond high school, they are generally limited to technical support positions. If you are interested in an oceanography or marine-related career, first you should enroll in as many chemistry, earth science, biology, physics, computer science, and mathematics classes as possible in high school. Also think about participating in a science fair, the ocean science bowl or an intern program that will give you hands-on experience. Some of the many ocean science-related programs available to high school students include: Coastal and Ocean Science Training Internship Program (Coast)
COAST provides an opportunity to challenge yourself, meet new friends, and try new activities while getting hands-on experience working in one of our nation's most pristine and diverse habitats. COAST is not a summer camp experience; you will, however, learn about the coastal environment in ways that you never could inside of the classroom or by reading a textbook.

Hans Walters, Marine Biologist
for the Wildlife Conservation Society
Official Title: Supervisor, Animal Department/New York Aquarium; Primary Investigator, Sand Tiger Shark Project For as long as he can remember, Hans has been fascinated with sharks. As a little kid, he watched the marine explorer Jacques Cousteau on television. When Hans was 10, his father took him to see a documentary film called "Blue Water, White Death." It was made by a former trustee of WCS named Peter Gimbel, and it followed a group of divers as they sailed around the world in an attempt to capture the first underwater footage of great white sharks. That cemented his desire to be a scuba diver and marine biologist. Hans feels that the opportunity to do conservation research as part of his job is an incredible gift. For part of the year, Hans studies sand tiger sharks in the wild. The information he gathers about their behavior and migration not only helps us better understand these fascinating animals, but may help develop strategies for protecting marine habitats and other marine animals. The Marine Biology Degree at OIMB The University of Oregon has recently approved a new Baccalaureate Degree
Students in the Marine Biology Major spend time on the Eugene campus and at the Oregon Institute of Marine Biology. In Eugene, students take introductory biology courses and fulfill chemistry, mathematics, physics, and general education requirements. Upper division biology courses are taken at OIMB and the marine biology major requires students to spend a minimum of three terms at the OIMB campus in Charleston. Courses are offered at OIMB during spring, summer and fall terms. The OIMB campus has dorms and a dining hall to accommodate students. Once students are admitted to the University, they can declare their intention to major in marine biology by designating themselves as marine biology premajors. On completion of the General Biology (BI 211, 212, 213, 214) or Foundations Biology (BI 251, 252, 253) sequences students may apply to become a marine biology major.
