    Career Outlook
Marine Biology Overview and Researcher Profiles Overview The field of marine biology the study of marine organisms, their behaviors, and their interactions with the environment is considered one of the most all-encompassing fields of oceanography. To understand marine organisms and their behaviors completely, marine biologists must have a basic understanding of other aspects or "disciplines" of oceanography, such as chemical oceanography, physical oceanography, and geological oceanography. Therefore, marine biologists and biological oceanographers study these other fields throughout their careers, enabling them to take a "big picture" approach to doing research. You say "Marine Biology," I say "Biological Oceanography." Click here to see if there's a difference
Because there are so many topics one could study within the field of marine biology, many researchers select a particular interest and specialize in it. Specializations can be based on a particular species, organism, behavior, technique, or ecosystem. For example, marine biologists may choose to study a single species of clams, or all clams that are native to a climate or region.
One area of specialization, the emerging field of marine biotechnology, offers great opportunity for marine biologists. Marine biotechnology research presents a wide range of possibilities and applications. One focus area is the biomedical field, where scientists develop and test drugs, many of which come from marine organisms. An example of an application of biotechnology research can be seen in industry or defense, where researchers have developed non toxic coatings that prevent the build-up of fouling organisms, such as barnacles and zebra mussels. Such coatings are useful for ships and intake pipes used in power plants.

External Links Marine Biology as a career Of all the ocean sciences, marine biology is by far the most well known and popular to the general public. This is largely due to the popularity of television programmes and books about the natural world, which have made people aware of the beauty and diversity of marine life forms.
First of all I need to correct a major misconception - marine biologists rarely if ever work with large marine mammals such as whales and dolphins - that type of work is mainly the domain of zoologists, and the number of vacancies world-wide is very small, unless you are willing to work unpaid for one of the various marine wildlife charities or pressure groups. Marine biologists often work at the opposite end of the size spectrum, analysing, classifying and counting bacteria, plankton, algae and less glamorous creatures such as shrimps, worms and fish larvae. Gathering surface plankton in the Indian Ocean Marine biologists are interested in the processes of how marine organisms develop, relate to one another, adapt to their environment and interact with it. With increasing knowledge of how these plants and animals live today, predictions can be made about how marine ecosystems will cope with changes such as global warming, pollution, pressure from fisheries and even damage caused by tourism in sensitive areas. Some marine biologists work closely with geologists to examine fossil marine organisms, which can give important clues about climate conditions in the past.

    Significant Points
    • A Ph.D. degree usually is required for independent research, but a master’s degree is sufficient for some jobs in applied research or product development; a bachelor’s degree is adequate for some nonresearch jobs.
    • Doctoral degree holders face considerable competition for independent research positions, particularly in universities; holders of bachelor’s or master’s degrees in biological science can expect better opportunities in nonresearch positions.
    • Biotechnological research and development will continue to drive employment growth.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Biological scientists study living organisms and their relationship to their environment. They research problems dealing with life processes. Most specialize in some area of biology such as zoology (the study of animals) or microbiology (the study of microscopic organisms). ( Medical scientists , whose work is closely related to that of biological scientists, are discussed elsewhere in the Handbook Biological scientists who work in applied research or product development use knowledge provided by basic research to develop new drugs and treatments, increase crop yields, and protect and clean up the environment. They usually have less autonomy than basic researchers to choose the emphasis of their research, relying instead on market-driven directions based on the firm’s products and goals. Biological scientists doing applied research and product development in private industry may be required to describe their research plans or results to nonscientists who are in a position to veto or approve their ideas, and they must understand the potential cost of their work and its impact on business. Scientists increasingly are working as part of teams, interacting with engineers, scientists of other disciplines, business managers, and technicians. Some biological scientists also work with customers or suppliers and manage budgets.

I WANT TO BECOME A MARINE BIOLOGIST OR SCIENTIST(I DON'T
    KNOW THE DIFFERENCE)
AND I WANTED TO KNOW IF YOU COULD HELP ME IN FINDING A

KIND OF HARD TO LOOK FOR THESE THINGS ON MY OWN. I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE BETTER TO TALK TO A MARINE SCIENTIST FOR BETTER HELP. THANK YOU, MIMI Mimi, Congratulations for thinking about this and planning ahead so early! A marine biologist is a scientist who specializes in the study of organisms that live in the ocean. Within the broad category of marine biology, investigators (i.e., scientists) specialize their study to a specific category of organisms - such as marine mammals, fishes, or algae, for

    Careers ln Marine Science
    Introduction
So you want to be a Marine Scientist? You like to be outside, heard the oceans would feed the world, want to learn to SCUBA dive or communicate with dolphins. GREAT! You know what you like and have a direction in mind. But is Marine Science for you? What exactly does a marine scientist do and how do you enter the field. Many people are asking these same questions. Interest in the ocean and the environment has sparked an increase in questions from students about careers in marine science. This publication will attempt to answer some of the commonly asked questions and help you learn more about this challenging field.
What does a Marine Scientist do?
More often, the question "Will I get to work with dolphins or whales?" is asked. The answer is probably not! Most people come into contact with marine animals at aquaria and theme parks, where they see some of the large, more glamorous animals that the seas have to offer. Television portrays marine biologists as divers searching for the mysteries of the deep or in a cage surrounded by sharks. The truth is that these are images of a small percentage of marine scientists. South Carolina has many more people studying shrimp than dolphins or sharks. Some scientists venture out on large research vessels, sometimes for extended periods of time, while others study water samples in a laboratory. Many spend their day hip deep in marsh mud while still more perform research to help determine the laws and regulations necessary to protect the ocean's limited resources.

When a career in marine science comes to mind, what do you think of?
You might imagine long days of swimming with dolphins and whales, SCUBA diving or spending time at sea on a vessel. But in reality, lots of different jobs get you involved with the ocean.
For example, did you know that the Monterey Bay Aquarium is not just a place for marine biologists? That's right! Here, we've got entire departments devoted to graphic design, publishing, video production, conservation research, public relations, education and much more.
So, even if you love the seas, but get seasick as soon as you leave the shore, you can still find a marine-related career that suits your talents and interests.
