What is Marine Biology
Marine biology is the study of plants and animal life within the seas ecosystems. The marine biology field covers many aspects including animals, plants and protists of our estuaries, coasts, and oceans, ranging from sharks to bacteria and microscopic algae. Rather then focus on the taxonomy of species, marine biology’s specie classification is focused on the environment in which covered species are those that spend some or all their time in the water.
Marine biology is a large area of study and also includes many sub fields including:
  • Biochemistry of marine organisms Species and biomes Ecosystems Reef habitats Growth, behaviour and interactions of animals or plants Geothermal ventricals
  • Qualifications in Marine Biology
A degree Marine Biology is usually accomplished through a Bachelor of Science degree with a stream in marine biology, however course titles vary according to institutions.

Q: What should I do now to prepare for a career in marine biology?
A: Take all the math and science courses offered at your school. Of course good grades will help, too. Also, try to volunteer at a local aquarium or zoo that has aquatic exhibits. You could also attend or work at summer aquatic camps or marine science programs. Q: Where can I find a good college for marine biology? A: Any good school that has a strong science department will fill your requirements for an undergraduate education. You can use the Peterson's guide to colleges or our career resource links to search for a college that suits your interests.

    Abstract
Large volumes of information related to biology are found on the Internet and World Wide Web. Student interests in biology are stimulated and sustained by many factors. For those students who desire that interest to become a career, the Internet provides useful resources for career planning and counseling, as well as resources to locate specific jobs and other employment opportunities. This paper provides an inventory of career resources for five areas of biology: biochemistry and molecular biology, botany, ecology and the environment, general biology, and zoology.
    Introduction
There has been a virtual explosion of information related to the biological sciences that is available on the Internet and the World Wide Web. The

Launching a Career in Marine Science Although marine science is typically thought of as a graduate program, it is never too early to begin preparing for a marine career. Starting in high school, for example, you should take as many math and science courses, including computer science, as you can. To gain useful experience, consider volunteering with state agencies or private organizations that work with marine or aquatic systems. You will get the opportunity to not only work and form relationships with marine science professionals, but also develop interests that you may wish to pursue in college. Educational programs also are helpful for aspiring marine scientists. Organizations such as the National Audubon Society, Outward Bound, Sea Explorers (a co-ed branch of the Boy Scouts), and various universities and regional environmental centers may offer summer programs that can provide valuable marine experiences. And never pass up a chance to talk to people who are involved in marine science such as at a school career-day presentation or at a local aquarium or science museum.

MARINE CAREERS: The Scientist by William R. Hall and Elizabeth A. Chajes Like people who work at other Sea Grant Colleges and marine institutions, we receive many calls from people who want to find out more about careers related to the ocean. Some are interested in careers like commercial fishing or diving, but most callers want to know how to become marine scientists. Many people associate marine science only with marine biology. However, marine science, or oceanography, includes many other exciting careers. There are several thousand marine scientists at work in the United States today. Approximately 40% are employed with state and federal government, 30% in universities and colleges, and 30% in private industry. If you think you'd like to be a marine scientist, the following information should help you prepare for your future career. If you find out that marine science isn't for you, but you still want to work on or near the ocean, don't give up. There are dozens of rewarding careers related to the sea. Check out our video called "Marine Careers" and the other resources listed at the end of this note for information about work in other marine fields. Oceanography at Palomar College: Careers in Oceanography Many people associate careers in oceanography as consisting of swimming with marine animals at a marine life park or snorkeling in crystal-clear tropical waters studying coral reefs. In reality, these kinds of jobs are extremely rare and there is intense competition for the few jobs that do exist. Most oceanographers work in fields that use science to solve a particular problem in the ocean. Some examples include:
    • What is the role of the ocean in limiting the greenhouse effect? What kinds of pharmaceuticals can be found naturally in marine organisms? How does sea-floor spreading relate to the movement of tectonic plates? What economic deposits are there on the sea floor? Can rogue waves be predicted? What is the role of longshore transport in the distribution of sand on the beach? How does a particular pollutant affect organisms in the marine environment?
Preparation for a Career in Oceanography
Preparing yourself for a career in oceanography is probably one of the most interesting and rewarding (yet difficult) paths to travel. The study of oceanography is typically divided into different academic disciplines (or sub-fields) of study. The four main disciplines of oceanography are:
    • Geological oceanography is the study of the structure of the sea floor and how the sea floor has changed through time; the creation of sea floor features; and the history of sediments deposited on it.

What does a Marine Biologist do?
Two-thirds of our planet is covered with ocean and just about every field within science can use the oceans and ocean life as a subject for study. Many scientists involved in marine biology are primarily ecologists, zoologists or botanists who study an organism or organisms that live in the sea. Marine science can also include archaeology, anthropology, sociology, engineering and other studies of human relationships with the sea. Ocean science, or oceanography, is the study of the global marine environment, from the polar seas to coral island lagoons. In their studies, marine scientists combine direct observation with a systematic approach for understanding the processes that control the earth's oceans. Recent concerns about global warming have encouraged scientists to view ocean science and earth science in a more holistic way in order to understand the global system as a whole. This and the plain fact that so much of the world's oceans have yet to be explored make for many exciting possibilities in the immediate future. Biological Oceanography focuses on marine organisms and how marine microbes, plants, and animals interact with each other and with the physical, chemical, and geological processes in the ocean. Biological processes in the ocean play a critical role in the total Earth system, particularly in the cycling of important biogeochemical materials such as carbon and in solar energy capture and conversion into organic material. Biological oceanographers study the distributions and abundance of marine organisms in the open ocean, coastal zone, and estuaries, both in the water column and on the seafloor.

    What is Oceanography?
(Thanks to: International Oceanographic Foundation "Oceanography" is a broad field in which many sciences are focused on the common goal of understanding the oceans. Since the ocean comprises the largest ecosystem on earth, study of the ocean ecosystems is critical to understanding man's effects on the biosphere. Persons specializing in Botany, cartography, chemistry, engineering, geography, geology, geophysics, limnology, mathematics, medicine, meteorology, and zoology all play roles in expanding our knowledge of marine environments. "Marine biology" is the study of life in the world's oceans, seas, bays and estuaries (in other words, in salt water), but requires an understanding of freshwater systems as well. It includes the study of all living marine organisms (from bacteria to whales) and their physical marine environment. The field of oceanography is usually broken down into sub-disciplines, including:
