Description:
Fascinated with the underwater world or interested in becoming a marine biologist? The island of Eleuthera in the Bahamas offers a unique aquatic world for diving and study. Based at the Island School , the reef system and shallow banks of this island are your classrooms. Under the instruction of professional marine biologists, the curriculum is designed to anchor traditional learning with immediate real-world application and hands-on experience. This accredited program focuses on the intricate ways entire reef systems come together to form beautiful yet fragile environments. Our studies provide a base for our research and underwater service work, which includes collecting much needed data for the REEF Fish Survey Project. Formal presentations, debates, informal discussions and dinnertime chats get us thinking about a myriad of topics, such as animals in captivity, marine parks and coral bleaching. Participants engage in comprehensive preparation before dives, field studies and lab work. The combination of dive training, field experiments, discussion lectures and marine surveys qualifies this course for high school and/or college credit.

The Because marine biology spans the biological and physical sciences, high school graduates who elect to enter this program should be competent in a variety of subjects. High school mathematics, biology, chemistry, physics, and English composition are important background for all college science majors. Additional courses in fields such as geology, meteorology, or oceanography can also be useful background. Community College students who want to transfer into the marine biology program will find it useful to have completed courses such as general biology, chemistry, physics, and calculus at the community college. Please see the ASSIST Web site (www.assist.org) to determine what courses in science at your community college are equivalent to the lower-division courses described below for the marine biology major at San Francisco State University. Moss Landing Marine Laboratories
San Francisco State University is a member of a consortium of six California State Universities that jointly operate the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories on Monterey Bay. Moss Landing conducts instructional and research activities on near-shore marine and estuarine environments. Oceangoing research vessels based at Moss Landing also participate in wide-ranging offshore marine research. The Moss Landing curriculum supports a range of programs in marine science. Students matriculating at any of the six participating institutions can take part or all of their graduate work at Moss Landing.

Objectives: To gain appreciation and familiarity with marine biology and natural history of marine plants and animals. Emphasis will be on understanding oceanic processes and earth history and how these relate to the life of animals and plants in their habitats. The impact of human activities on marine organisms is also emphasized. At a higher level, this course uses marine biology as the context to demonstrate how a variety of scientific methods can be employed to investigate the patterns and processes involving marine organisms.

biology, ecology, and the effects of human activities on marine Like Mosby s marine biology, which I reviewed in these pages six months ago,
http://www.textbookleague.org/34intro.htm
A good textbook of marine biology
Editor's Introduction All in all, An Introduction to the Biology of Marine Life is a commendable text. The taxonomic-overview chapter is poor, but the bulk of the book especially the material dealing with marine ecology and the effects of human activities on marine ecosystems is admirable. In a high-school setting, An Introduction to the Biology of Marine Life can serve as the textbook for an honors course or an advanced-placement course. from The Textbook Letter, September-October 1992

A Sound Survey of Life
in Marine Ecosystems
Gary C. Williams
Wm. C. Brown's An Introduction to the Biology of Marine Life is similar, in many ways, to Mosby's Marine Biology, the book that I reviewed in the March-April issue of The Textbook Letter. Each book is well written, competently researched, and comprehensive in its coverage of organismal biology, ecology, and the effects of human activities on marine environments. Each shows considerable variation in the quality of the illustrations that augment its text. Each has a good glossary and provides good reference materials. More to the point, each book has its own strengths and weaknesses, and neither really outshines the other in overall quality or in its suitability for use in a high-school honors course or an advanced-placement course. I would recommend either one to the teacher of such a course, for both are good books. With a few exceptions, the differences between the two have more to do with style than with content, and a teacher can pick the one that more closely fits the course outline that the teacher has developed.

EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES
  • Some staff members from the Marine Resources Research Institute participate as graduate faculty of the Graduate Program in Marine Biology at the College of Charleston. This consortial program, which leads to a Master of Science degree in marine biology, is designed to produce biologists who are able to conduct independent research. Staff members serve as major advisors as well as committee members and offer graduate-level courses in their area of expertise. Institute facilities, including computers and research vessels, are available to the graduate program. A limited number of assistantships are funded through grants to the scientific staff at MRRI. In addition, staff members serve as adjunct faculty at other institutions including Clemson University, the University of South Carolina, and the Medical University of South Carolina.
  • A cooperative research/training program has been developed with one of the state's historically black colleges, South Carolina State College, through funding by the Office of Naval Research. This program involves training minority college students in marine biology and provides opportunities for student participation in the Institute's research programs.
  • Public education in marine science is achieved through outreach programs such as tours, field trips, and seminars provided by staff and educational specialists. The Institute staff actively participates in the division's biannual open house, which provides an opportunity for the public to view facilities, talk with research staff about specific projects, and recieve information on life histories and habitat preferences of marine organisms.

Program Overview
Marine Biology (MARB)
The Department of Marine Biology offers these four degree programs: Marine Biology (MARB), Marine Biology License Option (MARB/LO), Marine Biology/Biomedical Sciences (MARB/BIMS) and Marine Fisheries (MARF). The Marine Biology program provides an excellent education in the biological sciences through studies undertaken in a unique coastal environment. The curriculum offers broad training in general biology, while emphasizing the local flora and fauna in estuaries and the marine environment. Students receive hands-on field sampling experience as well as internship opportunities. A strong preparation in English, mathematics, and the sciences is recommended. Five tracks are offered within the MARB curriculum. These are a Vertebrate Zoology track, a Coastal and Wetlands track, a Comprehensive Biology track, a Fisheries Biology track and an Aquatic Animal Health track. Students will declare a track at the end of their curriculum sophomore year (i.e., when all freshman and sophomore courses have been completed) and will then be assigned to an advisor whose teaching and research activities lie within that option. Students are required to choose three electives from courses within their track and to choose two electives from among the other options.

Coral reefs
Coral Structure
  • Reef builders in phylum Cnidaria (jellyfish, anemones, hydroids); Colony of individual animals -polyps; Tentacles have nematocysts (stinging cells) for prey capture; Polyps secrete calcium carbonate around the sac-like body in a radial arrangement of vertical plates - growth upwards; Dioeceous and hermaphrodite spp exist - mass spawning allows dispersal; Asexual reproduction (budding) produces a colony of genetically identical animals connected by tissue extensions.LI>
Corals may be
  • hermatypic - reef builders found in warm subtropical regions ahermatypic - non-builders found over wide depth range from tropics to polar regions
Most of these notes are about hermatypic corals and their reefs, but a new section has been added dealing with ahermatypic corals. Hermatypic corals contain photosynthetic dinoflagellates (zooxanthellae) from the Symbiodinium genus. These are located in the gut lining and may number up to 30000 cells/mm . Coral colour is related to zooxanthellae pigments so expulsion under conditions causing stress results in coral 'bleaching' eg during El Nino. The relationship between corals and dinoflagellates is mutualistic - Coral polyp provides : Zooxanthellae provide : protection oxygen living space food (e.g. glucose, amino acids) - up to 90%
