There is an old saying that geography is the eldest daughter of history. Implicit in this expression is the importance of studying how place affects the events that shape our world. Together, history and geography describe time and place. To understand the events and conditions in the past, it is important to consider the context of when and where. Maps can set this graphic context and provide keys to understanding major historic events and more subtle changes over time. This chapter of the National Atlas of the United States should be viewed as an aid to students of American history. Although it is not a history of our country from a geographic viewpoint,it does offer a map-based framework for understanding and appreciating the effects and influence of geography yesterday and today. The atlas is a direct result and descendant of our national efforts to explore and map America's forests, plains, waterways, and mountains. Here you can appreciate the natural conditions that fostered or thwarted settlement. You can see how the availability (or lack) of navigable rivers, timber, game, mineral resources, and arable land determined expansion and growth.

Monocacy Maryland (345K) Pea Ridge Arkansas (223K) Horseshoe Bend Alabama (230K) DVDs Before Ken Burns, Glory, and Gettysburg, the Civil War proved an effective backdrop for this 1982 miniseriesavailable complete and uncut on this three-disc setabout two families divided by the War Between the States. John Hammond stars as John Geyser, a Southerner caught "betwixt and between" when he becomes a war correspondent for the Northern newspaper published by his uncle. Like a Civil War-era Forrest Gump, he finds himself "where history's in the making," from the Battle of Bull Run to the scene of President Abraham Lincoln's assassination. Stacy Keach costars as an Army scout who takes the "fresh off the farm" Geyser under his wing. Julia Duffy is the schoolmarm who loves Keach. The ham-handed dialogue is a guilty pleasure ("What's wrong with this land that produces such a bitter fruit?" asks the embittered Geyser). The meticulously mounted battle scenes, though, are a Civil War reenactor's dream.

157. Welcome To The ASAWA Website
Information on romance between american men and Filipinas. Cultural observations, historical perspectives, immigration concerns, views, books, and maps.
http://filipinawives.com/
Established 1997 Welcome to the ASAWA website, associated with the ASAWA Guide to Fil-West Relationships and the ASAWA forum ASAWA's mission is to explore Fil-West relationships - those where one partner is a Filipino woman, better known as a "Filipina," and the other partner is a male from a western nation, such as the United States, U.K., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and Germany, as well as many others. Hopefully you'll find this exploration both educational and entertaining. ASAWA provides a variety of learning aids, from inexpensive self-help books, such as the ASAWA Guide to Fil-West relationships, to a free, private forum that currently hosts over 650 members from around the world. Of course, neither the site nor the forum are for westerners only. Everyone is welcome. The Filipina mystique is not reserved for foreigners, after all. I've had more than a few Filipino friends (usually 2nd generation) who find marriage to a Filipina just as wonderful and occasionally baffling as his western or Japanese counterpart! Needless to say, any Filipina girlfriend, fiancee, or wife should feel right at home here, also.
For those of you not up on your Tagalog, "Asawa" actually means "spouse," which can be either a husband or a wife. Here my primary focus is on the husband, of course. It's pronounced uh (as in "luck") - sau (as in "south") - wa (as in "was"), with the accent on the second syllable.
