Map Indexes Indexes to U.S. topographic maps show map users the various map series, special maps, and map byproducts produced and distributed by the U.S Geological Survey and to assist users in selecting and purchasing maps. The index identifies quadrangle areas by map name and scale. A map is usually named after the most prominent city, town or natural landmark shown on it. Topographic map indexes are located at the first table in the Map Room (TOPO MAP INDEXES). There is one index for each state. Index maps for Canadian topos are located here also. Below are facsimiles of indexes for various maps in the collection, especially for New York State 7.5 minute series (1:24,000). USGS topographic map indexes are located at the first table in the Map Room. Each state has an index. At the left is a facsimile of the cover of the New York topo map index. Library Map Locations Finding Maps and Atlases Electronic Resources Internet Resources Library Map Locations Atlases, maps, and gazetteers are available in print, microform, and electronic formats in several of the UC Berkeley libraries. The Library's primary collection of maps and other cartographic materials is located in the , 50 McCone Hall. Other campus collections include The Bancroft Library's historical maps of California and western North America and the East Asian Library's historical maps of Japan and gazetteers of East Asia. In addition, the Water Resources Center Archives has an extensive collection of historical and current maps related to water, as well as a collection of coastal aerial photographs dating from the mid-1940's to the mid-1950's. Maps and other cartographic materials at UC Berkeley can be located by searching the library catalogs Finding Maps and Atlases Pathfinder is the catalog used to find maps and other items in most of the UC Berkeley libraries. Melvyl is the catalog of materials available from the libraries of the ten UC campuses and other research collections in the state; it also includes several UC Berkeley affiliated libraries not included in Pathfinder. The best way to find maps or atlases in these library catalogs is to search by "subject keyword" and limit the search by publication format "maps." Poster Printing Information The M ap A nd G eographic I nformation C enter (MAGIC) has recently received a most remarkable gift: an original Clark and Tackabury 1859 topographical wall map of Connecticut, of which only four copies are known to exist. Mrs. Diana Levy generously donated the map in honor of her husband, Colonel Levy, who grew up in Abingdon, Connecticut, before entering U.S. Army, Military Intelligence. He purchased the map at a yard sale sometime after World War II. Following his death in 2003, his will stipulated that his executors find an appropriate home for the map “somewhere in Connecticut.” MAGIC was the lucky recipient. The 6' x 4' map was photographed and the negative scanned to produce this image. Donations to conserve this remarkable map will be appreciated. Suggestion Box Map Links: Map Library Media Home QEII Home Map Library Collection Development Policy The purpose of the general collection development policy of the Map Library is to provide a well-rounded collection of world-wide coverage comprised of general and thematic, small and large scale maps; national, provincial or state, regional, and thematic atlases; and related reference materials. In addition, as in the case of any modern University, it is essential for there to be special areas of emphasis because of the particular instructional and research needs of the University Community. The emphasis of this collection is on maps of Newfoundland, Canada, and the oceans around Newfoundland. The intensive collection of maps of Newfoundland should be carried out in cooperation with the Centre for Newfoundland Studies which currently houses the pre-1900 maps, as well as rare atlases. Because of the long-standing and still growing interest within the University in marine biology, oceanography, ocean engineering and other ocean related specialities, hydrographic, bathymetric, climatic, geologic, biogeographic and other marine related maps and charts are an important thematic area of concentration. In addition to the geographic areas of emphasis mentioned previously, attention must be paid to collecting cartographic materials relating to the rest of North America, especially New England, and Western Europe, especially Great Britain and the coastal areas of the Continent because of the interests of departments such as Geography, History, Geology, Engineering, and Biology.
