(last updated: NOTE: I am in the process of pruning the dead links. This should be finished sometime in July. The following compilation of Internet/WWW sites is intended to be an introductory guide to some of the map and reference resources available via the World Wide Web. Consider using one of the WWW search engines if you are looking for a specific type of map or reference. The maps which are listed here have been selected because they are thought to be reasonably useful and/or interesting. They are categorized by geographical region although there are a couple of thematic categories such as Interactive Maps which both highlights the potential of the WWW and are also fun to use. Note that there is some overlap in geographic coverage between these categories. The emphasis is on displayable maps (e.g. images) rather than digital cartographic (GIS) and satellite data which can be found in the separate compilation Geodata Information Sources . There is also another listing which includes Weather Maps and Imagery

Map Collection Introduction
The University of Chicago Map Collection: A Brief Guide
The University of Chicago Map Collection is one of the largest university map libraries in North America. Its 420,000 maps, 10,000 air photos, 2000 books, and hundreds of gigabytes of spatial data constitute a rich source of information for scholars and other users. The following pages contain a brief guide to the Collection.
Collection Scope
The University of Chicago Map Collection has particularly strong holdings of: (1) topographic maps; (2) urban maps; and (3) thematic maps.
(1) Topographic Maps
(2) Urban Maps
Urban studies have always been a research concern at the University of Chicago, and the Map Collection has supported such research by acquiring urban maps from all periods for all parts of the world. Its holdings of 18th-, 19th-, and early 20th-century maps of European and American cities are particularly noteworthy. Recently, the historical urban-map collection has been enriched considerably by the systematic acquisition of facsimile sets of early maps of European cities and Soviet military urban maps of cities all over the Eastern Hemisphere. In addition to historical maps, the Collection holds contemporary maps of cities and towns in all countries, including numerous thematic maps (e.g., planning maps and transit maps). Its Chicago collection is respectable.

Historic Map Libraries on CD ROM Now you can view historic maps on your computer screen, enlarged from the paper copies to allow for easy reading. Most have been enhanced by computer and manual editing to produce as much readable detail as possible (quality varies depending on the condition of the original). Researchers seeking old locations of towns, rivers, forts, etc. will find their work much easier. These maps may be used on web sites and publications. The only restriction is that prior permission is required if you use more than ten in any one project. All files are in .gif format for quick downloading. For Windows users, a duplicate set of files is supplied in .bmp format to allow use in software that will not allow importing of .gif files. Files are all designed to print clearly on standard 8.5 x 11-inch paper. The Historic Map Library CDs will run on either Windows (3.1 or higher) or Macintosh (Mac II or later, running System 7.5 or later). A minimum of 4MB available RAM is recommended. 2X or faster CD ROM drive required. Viewing may be done with the software furnished with the CD, with any web browser or any other software that will display .gif files. An index of maps is furnished in both text and .html format. The HTML version provides links so that you may quickly access the images on your web browser.
