Dr Jane Gates supports hard disk drive component-making at Seagate Technology. T he U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics ( http://stats.bls.gov ) reports that nearly 40 percent of all engineering jobs are in manufacturing. That includes every type of manufacturing, from the largest, heaviest transportation and construction equipment to the latest, lightest pants-pocket electronic bauble. Manufacturing engineering hiring has slowed a bit in the past few years, but job opportunities will be good overall, the Bureau expects. Starting salaries are some of the highest of all the engineering specialties. A BS is fine for most entry-level jobs, although continuing education may be necessary to keep abreast of the latest technology.

What is a Manufacturing Engineer? Manufacturing engineers deal with all aspects of the production processes that manufacture the huge variety of indispensable, innovative, high-tech, and, at times, mission-critical products we depend upon. Manufacturing engineering is very interdisciplinary in nature. Manufacturing engineers can specialize in a variety of application-specific technologies, including discovering and designing "smart" materials, controlling chemical and other manufacturing processes, pushing the limit in microelectronics, innovating in manufacturing microsystems. They are also responsible for understanding, integrating, and managing large information systems. In the new era of global and decentralized manufacturing where supply chain management is critical, the skills of the manufacturing engineer are in increasing demand. Thus, manufacturing engineers are well positioned to thrive in the new economy based on the generation and processing of information. They apply techniques pioneered in the study of manufacturing systems to design and control communication networks, electric power networks, and transportation networks. Many manufacturing engineers build on their understanding of both the production process and its economic aspects to pursue careers in management and consulting. In fact, since the field is closely related to management, manufacturing engineers can combine their technical expertise with their business experience to pursue an MBA.

Long before he came to UL, Donal Bermingham had an interest in engineering. A native of the Midlands, Donal studied Engineering as a Leaving Certificate subject. He was keen to stay near home for his third level education and he registered for a Diploma in Mechanical/ Manufacturing Engineering at Athlone Institute of Technology. Having graduated with distinction, Donal applied successfully for a transfer to the University of Limerick's degree in Production Engineering. He graduated in 1996 and obtained his first engineering position with Tyco Medical in Tullamore, Co Offaly. In his role as a Process Engineer, Donal was responsible for improving the efficiency of the manufacturing system. He subsequently moved to MedTech, a healthcare company based in Clara, Co. Offaly. MedTech produces medical devices for carrying out minimal invasive surgery. Donal's work is in the area of research and development where he manages complete projects through from idea-generation stage, through to prototype design, product commercialisation and market release. He says that his current job is very relevant to his Production Engineering degree. In 1999 Donal was awarded the Techstart Technologist of the Year and is currently studying for a Masters in Project Management at UL.
