jpr news Spring, 2000 JPR and the Jewish voluntary sector: third annual report-back session The third annual JPR seminar for the Jewish voluntary sector was held in December. The findings of two pieces of research commissioned by JPR as part of its four-year project on Long-Term Planning for British Jewry were presented to senior professional and lay leaders from a wide range of communal organizations. Chaired by JPR Board Member Rosalind Preston OBE, the seminar was sponsored by the accountancy firm Levy Gee. Rosalind Preston OBE and Ernest Schlesinger Introducing the speakers, Rosalind Preston stated: ‘We have learnt a great deal together in the past two years. The Jewish voluntary sector is a huge, complex business and JPR’s research will enable you to draw up strategic plans based on firm, hard data, not supposition’. She stressed that the research was being carried out at the request of the community and was being financed by the community. This was the first time any such research has been carried out by the Jewish voluntary sector. No similar research has ever been conducted for any other religious or ethnic group. Professor Barry Kosmin, JPR’s newly appointed Executive Director, described the seminar as a ‘report-back session’. He said it was now time to deliver the fruits of JPR’s first endeavours. However, my time here would be somewhat rushed as the next leg of my Australian odyssey would continue by departing Adelaide early on Tuesday morning. This would really only give me one day to explore the South Australian state capital. The city centre itself is a well laid out, square mile grid bordered on each side by terraces appropriately named North, South, East and West. Surrounding the centre on all sides are lovely European styled parks with the Torrens River bisecting the North Parklands. Early Monday morning I set off to do the good old fashioned "Lonely Planet Walking Tour" of the city. I walked up the main street, King William Road, which runs north/south through the city centre; I passed grand old buildings like Edmund Wright House, the Town Hall and the impressive Main Post Office. I have no idea where the idea to do a SWOT on Malaysia came from - I only reckoned it would good since a SWOT was always about positive post-whatever evaluation. *Note: These are just my opinions and feel free to disagree with me...politely of course. ^_^ Strengths Malaysians are educated, intelligent and willing to learn (at least from where I stand). They are ambitious, idealistic and they have good ethical principles. Young people such as a few of my students and Leonard Lee or even Brian Nickson (our very own Olympic driver at 14) show us older bunch what it means to be young in a developing country that soon will be theirs. And they HAVE the potential and the ability to be more than what they are now.

Ronnie Govender - a short biography and bibliography of this KwaZulu-Natal author. zoom Ronnie Govender Ronnie Govender (1934 - ) was born in Cato Manor, Durban, and has strong feelings about this community as is evident in most of his 13 plays and his collection of stories, At the Edge and Other Cato Manor Stories , for which he received the Commonwealth Writers Prize for the Africa region. During his eleven year teaching career, Govender wrote and directed his first play, Beyond Calvary , which received critical acclaim. As a protest against bourgeois theatre he formed the Shah Theatre Academy to foster indigenous theatre and pioneer the cultural boycott. In keeping with the cultural boycott The Lahnees Pleasure , one of South Africas longest running plays, refused invitations to play at establishment venues and in London. His most well known play, At the Edge , was invited to countries all over the world, and won Vita nominations for Best South African Playwright and Best Actor. In 1991 Govender was appointed Marketing Manager of the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town, and two years later appointed director of Durban's Playhouse Theatre. In 2000 Ronnie Govender was awarded a Medal by the English Academy of South Africa for his contribution to English literature. He is presently writing a book of personal experiences and reflections. Mealie- rice wasn't all that bad, if you knew how to cook it. If you weren't careful, the broken mealie grains would end up as a mushy porridge. The trick was to ensure that the broken mealie grains retained their wholeness like rice. Still, there was nothing like the real thing and those who had got used to rice for lunch and supper never quite got used to mealie-rice. Premlall, however, retained fond memories of mealie-rice. Slipping into old age, Premlall, or Cut-Neck-Bobby as he was popularly known, would recall those days with watery-eyed nostalgia and thrilled his grandchildren and other youngsters in the district with his tales about the good old days in Cato Manor and what a mouth watering combination mealie-rice, dhall and dry-fish chutney made.
