Government Manitoba: History and People History The nomadic Assiniboine Indians were among the first inhabitants of Manitoba. Other aboriginal nations, including the Cree and Sioux came from the east following herds of caribou and bison on their seasonal migrations. Unique to Canada, the northern parts of Manitoba were settled before the south. Europeans searching for the fabled 'Northwest Passage' first reached Manitoba through Hudson Bay in 1612. In 1690 -1691 Henry Kelsey, a Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) clerk explored Northern Manitoba from Hudson Bay to near the Pas on the Saskatchewan River. Later, in 1733 La Vérendrye led a party from New France that explored the Red and Winnipeg rivers and built several outposts in the area that is now Winnipeg. In 1731-1771 the HBC built Fort Prince of Wales at the mouth of the Churchill River. The French captured the Fort in 1782. In 1783 the HBC constructed Fort Churchill at the mouth of the Churchill River, it remained in continuous use until 1933. Throughout the seventeen and eighteenth century French Canadian voyageurs in birch bark canoes and couriers du bois "runners of the woods" continually traveled the rivers and forests west from New France in search of new sources of furs. Their trade and social connections with the aboriginal peoples led to the founding of a new Canadian nation, the Métis (peoples of mixed Aboriginal and European blood). The Métis, often connected with the North West Fur Company in its competition with the Hudson's Bay Company, established trading posts and small settlements across the west, contrary to the wishes of the HBC. One of their chief trading and wintering areas was at the heart of the Red River country where the Red and Assiniboine rivers meet. Here they established a headquarters and small riverfront farms.

adsonar_pid=3019;adsonar_ps=370666;adsonar_zw=540;adsonar_zh=220;adsonar_jv='ads.adsonar.com'; The first Europeans arrived in Manitoba in 1668. Two years later, King Charles II of England granted the charter that established the Hudson's Bay Company, which attempted to control the fur trade in most of western and northern Canada, including the region that is now Manitoba. It was not until 1812 that the first permanent settlers arrived in the province. Their attempts at farming often met with natural disaster, and they were subject to frequent harassment from the North West Company, which was engaged in a bitter struggle with the Hudson's Bay Company. The Dominion of Canada was established in the 1860s, and the lands of the Hudson's Bay Company were scheduled to become part of the new confederation. A group of Metis and Native Americans led by Louis Riel became concerned that they would lose their territory after the area became part of Canada. Their Red River Rebellion erupted in 1868, and Riel's forces were successful in establishing their own government for a brief time. The uprising was eventually put down, but the rebels did win property and language rights as a part of the 1870 legislation that joined Manitoba to the rest of Canada. (Riel, however, was later hanged for taking part in a rebellion in Saskatchewan.)

100th Anniversary
On August 18, 1975 the council of Minnedosa appointed the first Centennial Committee to make plans for the 100th anniversary in 1983. The book goes on to tell
about the history of Minnedosa and the surrounding area. All very fascinating and
very interesting reading. I have a copy of this particular book and would try to do
look ups if requested.
I also have a copy of "Forest To Field", a history of Rural Municpality of Clanwilliam
and The Village of Erickson. I would also do look ups in this book as well.
You can email your request to Bill Richards . I will do what I can in my spare time.
Anyone with a good idea for this and other associated pages are encouraged to submit
their ideas, also to Bill Richards . Lets make this page the best. I have various records (cemetery , business records and lodges) for McCreary and surrounding townships. They are the following: a) McCreary RC Parish Cemetery:1905-Sept 1987 b) McCreary Municipal Cemetery: From 1898-1911 as the Orange Lodge and = 1924-1987 as McCreary Municipal.

Back to About AFP Manitoba main page Our chapter was chartered in late October 1996 . Since that humble beginning, when fifteen dedicated fundraisers had the foresight to recognize the benefits of establishing a chapter of what was then NSFRE (National Society of Fund Raising Executives) here in Manitoba, many events and activities have helped the chapter achieve several important milestones.
First National Philanthropy Day The chapter held its first ever National Philanthropy Day and Awards for Philanthropy luncheon in November 1999 , recognizing an outstanding community philanthropist, an outstanding philanthropic organization and an outstanding volunteer fundraiser.
100% Pass Rate for 1 st CFRE Exam in Winnipeg
In 1999 six chapter members applied for and wrote their CFRE professional certification exams. It was the first time the CFRE exam was proctored in Manitoba. The pass rate for members on that first exam was 100%, a testament to the effectiveness of the Study Group Program initiated by AFP Manitoba. The Study Groups continue and the CFRE Exam is offered in Winnipeg annually. AFP Manitoba maintains one of the highest per capita rates of professional certification in the country at 18%.

History of the Town of Treherne Histories Churches Elevators Military Post Office ... Schools Town The exact beginning of Treherne is hard to pinpoint as early records are non-existent, due to fires, but according to information that is still around, a post office, blacksmith shop and a boarding or stopping house were here in 1881. Then the railroad came to the community around 1886 and the town built a pump house and water tower, as well as the first station which served as the foreman's house. Treherne has had its share of fires as well. In 1890, on April 28th, the block from Broadway to Griffin Street was wiped out by fire. On September 28th, 1898, the second disaster came when the block from Broadway to Smith Street was destroyed and more recently in 1999 an almost 100 year old Hotel/Bar/Restaurant burnt on Main Street. In most cases the buildings destroyed were replaced as soon as possible.
Over time the town has seen growth with a hotel, school, grain warehouse, elevators, flour mill, church, grocery and dry goods stores, hardware store, drug store and livery barn. Then came the lumber yard, creamery, skating rink, curling rink, nursing home and small hospital.
Since then many other growths, hardships and community events have shaped the community that exists today.
