    - AUGUST 29 TO SEPTEMBER 1, 2000
    - Wed, 6 Sep 2000 Evan Thornton and I spent Monday, August 29 to Friday, September 1, 2000 birding the south-west corner of Manitoba. We stayed at the comfortable Adam Lake campground in Turtle Mountain Provincial Park and concentrated much of our birding effort on the Whitewater Lake area. The following is a brief report on our trip. WHITEWATER LAKE The lake itself held large numbers of waterfowl and shorebirds. There were approximately 1,500 shorebirds in total, with Semipalmated, Least, Baird's, Stilt, Greater Yellowlegs, Lesser Yellowlegs and dowitchers (the majority of which were Long-billed) predominating. Avocet, Willet, Black-bellied and Semipalmated Plover, Sanderling and Red-necked Phalarope were present in smaller numbers. On August 29 we saw 1 Hudsonian Godwit. On August 28 and 29 single Buff-breasted Sandpipers were on the mudflats within the impoundment. On September 1 a flock of 27 Buff-breasted Sandpiper, along with 2 American Golden Plover, was in the last cultivated field along 123W before the impoundment. A variety of herons and egrets were also present. On the morning of August 29 we arrived at the viewing mound at dawn and just at sunrise we counted a large number of Great Egret leaving the main impoundment and flying west. An initial flock of 19 birds was followed by a number of smaller groups for a conservative total of 36 Great Egret. Throughout our stay this species was always visible on the lake. We also saw 1 Cattle Egret (August 30 and 31 - associating with a herd of cows to the west of the final stretch of road to the viewing mound) and 4 White-faced Ibis (August 29). The area also had good numbers of American Bittern, Black-crowned Night Heron and Great Blue Heron. 300-400 Sandhill Cranes feed in the nearby fields and White Pelicans were always in view.

    Did you know?
MHS is the second-oldest historical society in Canada. Founded in June 1879 by an Act of the Manitoba Legislature, the Manitoba Historical Society (MHS) is the oldest organization in western Canada devoted to the promotion of public interest in, and preservation of, the region's historical resources. To learn more about the MHS and its activities, please select from the menus above.
    What is MHS?
    The MHS mandate is to:
    • foster the preservation of property relevant to an appreciation of the history of Manitoba
    • encourage research and publications relating to the history of Manitoba
    • promote and encourage public interest in Manitoba and Canadian history
    • assist in the formation and work of local historical societies in furthering the objectives of the Society throughout Manitoba
In 1879, Winnipeg Alderman Alexander McArthur , an MHS founder, envisioned an organization devoted to the study, preservation and promotion of history and natural sciences of the province. It was to function as a library, museum, and archives. The wisdom and foresight of McArthur's vision was manifest, as the Manitoba Historical Society would later provide the foundations for the present Winnipeg Public Library , the Manitoba Museum , and the Provincial Archives of Manitoba . Today, the focus of the Society remains steadfast to the preservation, promotion, education, and celebration of the history and rich cultural heritage in our province.

Press Release Clean Technology Development Announced in Dauphin For Hemp Processing Parkland Bio Fibre Ltd. receives $3 Million Contribution from Sustainable Development Technology Canada Dauphin, MB July 5, 2005 The first hemp processing plant in Manitoba is one step closer to diversifying the rural and agricultural economy in the Parkland Region, following a funding announcement made in Dauphin today. A Canadian consortium led by Parkland Bio Fibre Ltd. will receive a contribution of $3 million, subject to final contract negotiations, from Sustainable Development Technology Canada (SDTC). This funding complements significant efforts of the provincial and municipal governments in moving this project forward. The funding will be used to develop and demonstrate a process that will utilize raw industrial hemp fibre to produce insulation and other products while reducing agricultural waste streams. The process will utilize European technology, currently used in small-scale operations, that will be adapted and configured into a larger pilot processing facility in Dauphin. The main value-added product will be biofibre insulation, which can be used in place of “pink” fibre glass insulation in the construction industry. Other products produced initially will be non-woven matting for use in the horticulture industry, fibre for the paper recycling industry and short fibre that makes excellent horse and pet bedding.

The CATP Museum is a non-profit, charitable organization founded and operated by volunteers. The Museum is dedicated to the preservation of the history of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan and serves as a unique memorial to those airmen who trained and served, and especially those who died, while serving their country in the air war of 1939-1945. This is the only Museum in the world dedicated solely to this goal and we think it is fitting that it is located in Manitoba where so much of the training was carried out. At the time the Plan was signed in December 1939, Canada had only 4,000 people in the Royal Canadian Air Force but enrollment reached 250,000 by the end of 1943. Aircrew personnel from Australia, New Zealand, England and Canada were all trained under The Plan. Canada was chosen as the training country because of its preferable climate and the fact it was far from the dangers of enemy activity. The Plan was referred to by Winston Churchill as Canada’s greatest contribution to the allied victory and referred to by President Roosevelt as the “aerodrome of democracy.” General CATP Museum Information Our Mission:
