Association of Manitoba Archaeologists
Since its inception in 1975, the Association of Manitoba Archaeologists (AMA) has served to strengthen the profession of archaeology in Manitoba by acting as a channel of communication between its members, various levels of government, and the national and international community at large. The organization was incorporated in 1984, with the following goals established:
  • to promote the profession and the practice of archaeology in Manitoba;
  • to foster cooperation in research and the free interchange of archaeological information;
  • to promote the protection of archaeological resources;
  • to implement and support programs of public education about archaeology;
  • to actively seek and support policies at all levels of government which assist and encourage our aims;
  • to encourage other institutions which deal with archaeology.
An elected Executive conducts the routine administrative tasks of the Association. A system of committees undertake special projects, such as liaising with governments and other associations, organizing conferences, preparing literature reviews, or recommending site protection. The Association meets regularly throughout the year in order to conduct general business. Special events, such as the occasional guest speaker or a workshop on a specific topic in archaeology, are also held from time to time as the opportunities arise. In the past the AMA has recommended guidelines for archaeological impact assessments under the new Manitoba Heritage Act; lead support for the placement at Manitoban universities of persons who actively promote the education and research of archaeology in the province; encouraged the greater use of archaeological resources in the management of the environment; held a public symposium at the Canadian Archaeological Association (1985) conference; published a volume of scholarly papers in cooperation with the Manitoba Archaeological Society; and implemented the first annual Archaeology Month program (1995) in the province. Members of the AMA are continuing to initiate similar activities.

The chief executive of Manitoba is the lieutenant governor, who is appointed by the Canadian governor-general in council to serve a 5-year term. The lieutenant governor, representing the British crown, holds a position that is largely honorary. The premier, the leader of the majority party, is the actual head of the provincial government and presides over the executive council. The Legislative Assembly contains 57 seats, including those of the premier and the members of the executive council. Members of the legislature are popularly elected to a 5-year term; however, the lieutenant governor, on the advice of the premier, may call for an election before the term has been completed. The province of Manitoba is represented by 6 senators appointed by the Canadian governor-general in council and by 14 members in the House of Commons popularly elected to serve terms of up to five years in the Canadian Parliament. Frequently Asked Questions

On January 23, 2001, the Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, the Honourable Jean Friesen released the document" "Planning Manitoba's Capital Region: NEXT STEPS" , which announced a new Capital Region initiative for Manitoba. The intent of the initiative is to produce a Regional Policy Plan for Manitoba's Capital Region. The Government of Manitoba has a strong commitment to the Capital Region. The Province has responsibility for land management, municipal government, resources and the environment. It also contributes financially to infrastructure, educational and health services, some municipal services, and a number of economic development initiatives. Ensuring a safe, healthy, prosperous and efficient Capital Region is important to Manitoba as a whole and is a significant Provincial interest. The Winnipeg Capital Region is located in the southeast part of the province located along the Assiniboine and Red Rivers with the northern part of the region bounded by the south basin of Lake Winnipeg. It makes up approximately 1.4% of the province's land base. The 1996 population of the region was 706,000. The region is made up of the City of Winnipeg (the province's capital and largest city), the City of Selkirk, Town of Stonewall and the Rural Municipalities of Cartier, East St. Paul, Headingley, Macdonald, Ritchot, Rockwood, Rosser, St. Andrews, St. Clements, St. Francois Xavier, Springfield, Tache and West St. Paul.

LINKS STUDIES VIOLENCE ... TOC Political Commentary Manitoba's Legislative Building, principal among public buildings in the province, accommodates the legislative assembly, its committees and staff, as well as offices for the ministers and deputy ministers of all government departments. Members, at the time it was being planned just after the turn of the 20th century, were unanimous in their desire to build an imposing structure - a symbol of strength and vitality in the capital city, "not for present delight nor use alone... but such as our descendants will thank us for." These sentiments were embodied in the rules of the architectural competition which was announced by the Government of Manitoba It seems University of Winnipeg researcher Frank Albo has spent years collecting evidence suggesting the floor plans of Manitoba's Legislative Building might be more occult-based than anyone guessed. Freemasons all over the world have had bizarre meetings there and his theories were supported by subsequent findings hieroglyphic writings, eight-pointed stars.. This is only the tip of the iceberg.
