“Words cannot express how much this means to us as a family. Now our daughter will grow up knowing that her family is recognized and valued like those of her friends."
Jordan Cantwell, applicant for marriage, Globe and Mail , Sep. 16, 2004 "T he traditional definition of marriage in Manitoba is reformulated to mean a voluntary union for life of two persons at the exclusion of all others," Court of Queen's Bench Justice Douglas Yard ruled today in a Manitoba court room. The decision makes Manitoba the fifth province or territory in Canada to acknowledge that the definition of marriage now includes same-sex couples. This case marks the first time that Ottawa has not tried to interfere in some way with the delivery of justice. Lawyers for the federal government and the Manitoba government offered no opposition to the move, in an acknowledgment that discrimination against gay and lesbian couples must end. Gay marriage was made legal by Ontario's Court of Appeal on June 10, 2003

Creditors can seize band funds-court Paul Barnsley, Windspeaker Staff Writer, Winnipeg
The Manitoba Court of Appeals has thrown a huge monkey wrench into the First Nation govearnance machinery.
Some say it's a decision that must be overturned by the Supreme Court of Canada immediately; others say it's the greatest breakthrough in the history of Canada/First Nations' relations.
On Feb. 14, the Manitoba Court of Appeals issued a 59-page decision that opened the door for a company owed money by a First Nation to slap a garnishment on the nation's off-reserve bank account. McDiarmid Lumber, a long-established Winnipeg-based firm, had appealed to the courts for a decision that would allow it to seize money in the God's Lake First Nation's account at the Winnipeg branch of Peace Hills Trust.

MANITOBA GOVERNMENT LOOKING TO PROVIDE MORE PUBLIC ABORTIONS WINNIPEG, September 25, 2001 (LSN.ca) - The Manitoba government is looking to expand abortion services in the province according to a document obtained by the Winnipeg Sun. A June 21, 2001 memo of the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) reveals that the Gary Doer government is looking to expand abortion services in the province. The move came several months after federal Health Minister Alan Rock threatened to penalize various provinces, including Manitoba, for failing to publicly fund abortions performed at private abortion mills.
The Sun reports that the WRHA has laid out three options to increase abortion services in Winnipeg. - fund a new clinic through the Women's Health Clinic a non-profit Winnipeg facility that provides health services to women. - expand abortion services at Health Sciences Centre where the majority of publicly funded abortions are performed in Manitoba - buy the Morgentaler clinic (which is unlikely due to the breakdown of talks between the gov't and Morgentaler)
"The government has stated that as a policy objective, they do not want to fund private clinics," Terry Goertzen, the WRHA's director of public affairs, wrote in the June 21, 2001 memo to health officials. "With respect to abortion procedures, they would like to see a proposal to develop this service in a non-profit, community-based setting."
