Manitoba Government Won't Fight
Three Same-Sex Marriage Bids
by Steve Lambert
CNEWS Canada
WINNIPEG (CP) - The Manitoba government won't oppose a court bid by three same-sex couples who want to get married, saying it's a matter for Ottawa, not Winnipeg. "We will not oppose what they are seeking," Justice Minister Gord Mackintosh said in an interview Wednesday. "We see it as an issue between applicants and the federal government and we will not be defending the federal (marriage) law. We don't have an interest in opposing legally recognized rights of Canadians." Three same-sex couples are taking the federal and provincial governments to court in a bid for the right to marry in Manitoba. Courts in Ontario and other provinces have already weighed in on the subject, said Mackintosh. "I think the weight of the decisions across the country have pointed to the conclusion that the current federal law is not in accordance with the Charter, so I am pleased that we're going to have some definitive ruling here in Manitoba." The minister's comments were welcomed by gay-rights advocates, who said the court battle has a better chance of succeeding with the provincial government standing aside.

Hold your Provincial Government accountable:
The example of UNPAC Manitoba
UNPAC (MB) is an association that is dedicated to seeking equality for women through the implementation of the Platform for Action. UNPAC(MB) works to support the objectives contained in the PFA by working through community action, and with other organizations, locally and globally, for equality, development and peace. UNPAC(MB) has been working hard to get the word out about their governments slow progress on the PFA. The areas of poverty, violence, health for women provide a focus for their actions. Some of the particular issues of concern for Manitoban women include: the poverty of aboriginal women, discriminatory EI regulations, accessible day care, women's under representation on regional health boards, women's unpaid work, and lack of programs that address the violence in women's lives. In the words of Nancy Buchanan, the Beijing +5 Project co-ordinator, here are some of the specific strategies that UNPAC(MB) can share on how they are taking action to pressure the Manitoba government towards implementation of the Platform for Action.

37th Annual General Assembly
2005 The Year of the Veteran
This year is the Year of the Veteran, and a fitting theme for the Manitoba Metis Federation's Annual General Assembly. So many of our men and women - many only teenagers - fought for what they believed in, such as principles of freedom, tolerance, respect and dignity for all people throughout the world. We enjoy this legacy to this day. So to the Veterans across this country, and in particular to those we call our own, we will remember. The AGA provides the opportunity to review our accomplishments and achievements over the past year, and set the direction our government will take in the year to come. We must remember where we came from in order to see where we are going. Special thanks to Southwest Vice President Leah LaPlante, Board Members Rita Cullen and John Fleury and the Metis of the Southwest Region for helping host the Assembly in Brandon. The debate and deliberations which will take place at the Assembly will speak to the strength and spirit of the Metis Nation. Meeqwetch

Green Party Calls NDP Tuition Policy Elitist
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2003 - WINNIPEG - The Green Party is calling the NDP government’s approval last week of a 92.1 percent tuition fee increase by the University of Manitoba’s law faculty elitist and exclusive. The Greens’ condemnation of NDP higher education policy comes the day before post-secondary students’ "Day of Action" in Winnipeg and "Freezin’ for the Freeze" event in Brandon.
"It is ironic that most of those people sitting around the NDP cabinet table had the benefit of subsidized education and affordable student loans, and now they are acting to deprive today’s students of these same things," said Green Party of Manitoba leader Markus Buchart.
"Two things shouldn’t be rationed by price: health and education," said Buchart. "The New Democrats’ approval of a doubling of law tuition means that they approve of rationing access to education by price."
"The Premier, especially, has a lot of nerve. His government has sustained high tuition fees and saddled lots of people under crushing student loan debt loads. And yet he himself didn’t pay back his much smaller student loan when he was able to until his salary was garnished."

Speaking Points to the NUPGE/Manitoba Government and General Employees’ Union Convention
Saturday October 23, 2004 11:18 AM Sisters and Brothers, I am very pleased to join with you today. Thank you to Brother Peter Olfert, for inviting me and to all your executive members. As President of the Canadian Labour Congress, I bring to you the best wishes and solidarity of the Canadian Labour Congress' 3-million affiliated members as you meet at this important Convention. I simply must start by answering the question I know is of critical concern to all MGEU members in these very troubling times. I strongly believe that there is only one way to deal with this issue. President Olfert simply must keep his moustache! And as you can see, I am completely unbiased on this issue! Well, I want you to hear this straight from the horse's mouth: the National Post has made it up. The free trade agreement was a huge mistake. It has hurt Canada. It has hurt Canadian working women and men. It has hurt the Canadian economy. The free trade agreement continues to hurt our softwood lumber industry and our energy sector and many other sectors of our economy.

Climate Change
An international scientific consensus has emerged that our world is getting warmer. Abundant data demonstrate that global climate was warmed during the past 150 years. The increase in temperature was not constant, but rather consisted of warming and cooling cycles at intervals of several decades. Nonetheless, the long-term trend is one of net global warming. Corresponding with this warming, alpine glaciers have been retreating, sea levels have risen, and climatic zones are shifting.
  • The 1980s and 1990s are the warmest decades on record The 10 warmest years in global meteorological history have all occurred in the past 15 years The 20th century has been the warmest globally in the last 600 years.
Most experts agree that average global temperatures could rise by 1 to 3.5 degrees Celsius over the next century. In Canada, this could mean an increase in annual mean temperatures in some regions of between 5 and 10 degrees. Climate change is more than a warming trend. Increasing temperatures will lead to changes in many aspects of weather, such as wind patterns, the amount and type of precipitation, and the types and frequency of severe weather events that may be expected to occur. Such climate change could have far-reaching and/or unpredictable environmental, social and economic consequences.
