Nunavut, Canadian Political Geography
Related Category: Canadian Political Geography Nunavut [n OO u v OO Pronunciation Key Northwest Territories Geographically, the territory is largely on the Canadian Shield and almost entirely north of the tree line (except near the Manitoba border); the landscape is dominated by tundra , rock, and snow and ice. The capital and largest town is Iqaluit on Baffin Island at Frobisher Bay. The territory is effectively controlled by the Inuit, who make up 85% of the population, although control could change with population growth. Most of the richest and most well-developed parts of the Northwest Territories, which lie along the Mackenzie River, were not included in Nunavut, which must rely on the development of its mineral resources, in addition to hunting, fishing, fur trapping, sealing, and the production of arts and crafts. The Inuit hold outright title to about 20% of Nunavut, including 13,896 sq mi (36,000 sq km) of subsurface mineral rights. The territory faces problems including high unemployment, substance abuse, and suicide rates, and some 90% of its budget currently comes from the Canadian government. There are no paved roads, and long-distance travel is largely by air. There is a small tourist trade, lured by the wildlife and vast, spare wilderness, as well as Inuit cultural attractions.

COMMUNICATIONS - RESEARCH
Indigenous communication systems (farmer-to-farmer) in Nepal
Although much research has been done on indigenous knowledge (IK), comparatively little is known about indigenous communication systems. Indigenous communication has greater significance for rural development than has indigenous knowledge on its own. This is because it can be used to disseminate both indigenous knowledge and information about new technologies, as initiated both by the farmers themselves and by extensionists. The extension system is mainly a top-down approach, with extensionists rarely discussing or exploring indigenous practices with farmers. Research in Kenya into traditional fumigation practices, for example, revealed that there is little or no dissemination of farmers' knowledge through official channels. (See Goldman, A. (1991) 'Tradition and change in post-harvest pest management in Kenya', Agriculture and Human Values
Although indigenous communication has been an area of research only since recently, it is increasingly being recognized as an important channel for development, given the limitations of the extension service. Much research has shown that most farmers, both men and women, do not learn about new technologies through the media or from extensionists, but instead from relatives, friends or neighbours, or through their own experiments. Therefore, especially for a country like Nepal, which is characterized by isolated communities and social hierarchy, the effective use of indigenous communication channels can be very significant for rural development.

Protected Areas and the Regional Planning Imperative in North America
Edited by Gordon Nelson, J.C. Day, Lucy M. Sportza, James Loucky, and Carlos Vasquez
Regional planning is imperative if North America has any hope of retaining continental biodiversity. This timely collection of essays presents new protected areas theory, method, and practice and reinforces this theme of regional planning. With a North American focus, these essays consider the history, ecology, policy, and planning of protected areas while raising awareness of their contribution to society. Contemporary understandings of protected areas are challenged as the book forces readers to move from a mentality of the past that saw protected areas as "fortresses," to a wider understanding, where protected areas are seen as interdependent with other landscapes in the matters of biodiversity, ecological integrity, and environmental health.

INTRODUCTION
The province of Saskatchewan is in the Great Plains region. It is bordered by Manitoba (E), Alberta (W), the United States (S) and the Northwest Territories (N). The southern border is the 49th parallel (which is the United States/Canada boundary). The 60th parallel is the northern boundary. Its shape resembles a rectangle. The area is 652,330 sq km (251,866 sq mi). Saskatchewan ranks fifth in size among the provinces of Canada.
NATURAL REGIONS
Saskatchewan lies in two major natural regions: the Canadian Shield (north) and the Interior Plains (south). The CANADIAN SHIELD makes up about forty percent of the surface area .
  • area - Its southern edge begins north of the Saskatchewan River at the Manitoba border, continues west-northwest across the province, through Lac La Ronge to the Alberta boundary south of Lake Athabasca.
  • landscape -The shield is an area of very old rocks ( which came from ancient mountains). Great glaciers moved across the shield creating an area dotted with thousands of lakes, rivers and bogs (poorly drained land).
South of the shield are the INTERIOR PLAINS. In the time of glaciers most of this lowland was under the waters of Lake Agassiz, a prehistoric lake. During the Ice Age a great delta ( deposits of earth and sand ) was formed. The Plains region is mostly flat with some gently rolling hills and valleys.
