The Manitoba Arts and Culture Advantage
Culture and the arts are an integral part of the Manitoba lifestyle. Our cultural scene is founded on the diverse ethnic mosaic, world-class attractions, and imagination and creativity of Manitobans. As culture is a key economic sector in its own right, and acts more generally as a catalyst for creativity and growth, the Manitoba Government plays an active role in supporting and promoting the industry.
The Manitoba Arts and Culture Scene
Manitoba has a rich cultural diversity. 21.5% of Manitoba’s population is made up of visible minorities and Aboriginals, the second-highest ratio among provinces. Aboriginal culture is an important element in Manitoba’s heritage and an emerging force in comtemporary artistic expression. Winnipeg boasts the second-largest Francophone community outside of Quebec. The province is home to the largest Icelandic settlement outside of Iceland, and to vibrant Ukrainian and Mennonite communities. This diversity is celebrated in a multitude of facilities, attractions and events, including the Mennonite Heritage Village north of Steinbach, the Winnipeg Jewish Theatre, the Centre culturel franco-manitobain in St. Boniface, and Le Cercle Molière, Canada’s oldest continuously operating theatre. Manitoba is home to many world-class cultural attractions. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet was one of the first dance companies to be established in Canada and now thrills audiences at home and around the world. The province is also home to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Manitoba Opera and many high-calibre art galleries, museums and heritage sites. The Forks, the Winnipeg Art Gallery, the Costume Museum of Manitoba, and sites like Lower Fort Garry, are only a small sample of the hundreds of attractions in the province. The popular Manitoba Museum is a favourite for guests to the province, and has achieved the Michelin Guide Three-Star rating. The Manitoba Museum receives 400,000 visitors each year. There are also excellent venues all across the province, ranging from the Keystone Centre and the Western Centennial Auditorium in Brandon, to the Prairie Theatre Exchange, Rainbow Stage and the Manitoba Theatre Centre in Winnipeg.

37th Annual General Assembly
2005 The Year of the Veteran
This year is the Year of the Veteran, and a fitting theme for the Manitoba Metis Federation's Annual General Assembly. So many of our men and women - many only teenagers - fought for what they believed in, such as principles of freedom, tolerance, respect and dignity for all people throughout the world. We enjoy this legacy to this day. So to the Veterans across this country, and in particular to those we call our own, we will remember. The AGA provides the opportunity to review our accomplishments and achievements over the past year, and set the direction our government will take in the year to come. We must remember where we came from in order to see where we are going. Special thanks to Southwest Vice President Leah LaPlante, Board Members Rita Cullen and John Fleury and the Metis of the Southwest Region for helping host the Assembly in Brandon. The debate and deliberations which will take place at the Assembly will speak to the strength and spirit of the Metis Nation. Meeqwetch

Why Does Liza Frulla Still Have a Job?
Posted by andrew at September 29, 2004 01:27 PM It must be so nice to be a Liberal MP, especially a Liberal MP from Quebec. You're almost guaranteed a spot in Cabinet, no matter how boneheaded you happen to be. To boot, you get to treat the entire country as your own little sandbox, wherein you can build and destroy sandcastles as the whimsy strikes. One would think that the Liberals might have learned something from the sponsorship scandal, viz., that neither Quebecers nor the rest of Canada really appreciate the Liberals running things like this is some third-rate kleptocracy. One would think. But enter Liza Frulla , who has inexplicably been given the job of Minister of Canadian Heritage. Here's Liza last month, opining on the prospect of Don Cherry returning to HNIC

Separately, Microsoft Canada will donate software with a retail value of $312,228 to all libraries receiving foundation grants.
"On behalf of the people of Manitoba, I thank Bill and Melinda Gates for their donation," McGifford said. "The Manitoba government is committed to increasing educational opportunities for families and to ensuring that neighbourhoods have safe places for children to play and learn. This grant will allow libraries to provide increased Internet service to Manitobans who may not have any other point of access."
The grant will aid 46 Manitoba libraries by providing 128 Internet pre-loaded workstations, Internet installation, a regional training computer lab and a portable computer lab for training in rural areas. Manitoba libraries eligible for Foundation grants were those that serve communities where 17.6 percent or more of the population live in poverty. Figures were determined by the Poverty Profile 1996 report issued by Canada's National Council of Welfare. "As the primary Internet access point in many communities, public libraries play a critical role in educating Manitobans of all ages and income levels," Minister McGifford said. "This gift, combined with the province's ongoing support to libraries, will give more Manitobans the tools they need to gain knowledge and employment in the growing information economy."
