adsonar_pid=3019;adsonar_ps=370666;adsonar_zw=540;adsonar_zh=220;adsonar_jv='ads.adsonar.com'; The first Europeans arrived in Manitoba in 1668. Two years later, King Charles II of England granted the charter that established the Hudson's Bay Company, which attempted to control the fur trade in most of western and northern Canada, including the region that is now Manitoba. It was not until 1812 that the first permanent settlers arrived in the province. Their attempts at farming often met with natural disaster, and they were subject to frequent harassment from the North West Company, which was engaged in a bitter struggle with the Hudson's Bay Company. The Dominion of Canada was established in the 1860s, and the lands of the Hudson's Bay Company were scheduled to become part of the new confederation. A group of Metis and Native Americans led by Louis Riel became concerned that they would lose their territory after the area became part of Canada. Their Red River Rebellion erupted in 1868, and Riel's forces were successful in establishing their own government for a brief time. The uprising was eventually put down, but the rebels did win property and language rights as a part of the 1870 legislation that joined Manitoba to the rest of Canada. (Riel, however, was later hanged for taking part in a rebellion in Saskatchewan.)

Parks Canada - Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada
Preface and Acknowledgements
Over the years, guidance on how best to conserve our irreplaceable built heritage, and the limits of acceptable change to it, have been provided in a number of documents (see the BIBLIOGRAPHY ). A common set of standards and guidelines for the conservation of historic places in Canada, however, remained an unfulfilled challenge. In June 2000, a working group of heritage conservation and real property experts from industry, non-governmental heritage organizations, municipal, provincial and territorial governments, and federal departments and agencies was brought together by the federal Department of Canadian Heritage to address this shortcoming. The result is this document. Like most of its Canadian predecessors

Bill for Manitoba sound stage goes up
Last Updated Tue, 12 Apr 2005 19:05:43 EDT CBC Arts WINNIPEG - The final cost of bailing out a financially troubled Manitoba film studio will be more than $3 million, a far cry from the initial estimate of $1.8 million. In addition to paying $1.8 million for the Prairie Production Centre sound stage, the Manitoba government has also forgiven $1.26 million in loans taken out by its former owner. Richard Gere rehearses in Winnipeg with a local dancer during the shooting of 'Shall We Dance?' (CP photo) That's in addition to a federal loan of roughly $450,000 that has also been forgiven. "This facility needs to be debt-free in order to be sustainable," a spokesman for Manitoba Culture Minister Eric Robinson told the Canadian Press. Robinson has argued that spending public money on the studio is necessary to attract film shoots to the province.

The Players - Our Community's Contribution to Sport
    The Players Draws Rave Reviews
Over 1,500 Visitors to date (Sept 1999)
"The exhibit contains some fascinating tangible remembrances of ... athletes and sporting events." - Winnipeg Free Press "[A] most worthwhile exhibit, which illustrates a significant component of Jewish life dating back to the late 1800s. ... Those were the days, my friend, when I'd snatch a five-cent package of seeds off the rack at my dad's store on Salter and Pritchard, and meander over to Aberdeen School to watch a double header. ... Pay a visit." - Harvey Rosen, the Jewish Post and News. "The Players celebrates Winnipeg's Jewish sports heritage ..." - the Winnipeg Sun. When the idea was first tossed around, there were a lot of sceptics. An exhibit on Winnipeg's Jewish sports history? A museum is not for sports. And is there enough material? Would it draw people in? But we built it. And they came. In record numbers. Exhibition Dates Extended
The Jewish Heritage Centre is pleased to announce that its first in-house curated exhibit - The Players: Our Community's Contribution to Sport has been an overwhelming success. Since its June 3 opening, over 1,500 people have visited the exhibit, including people whose stories, artifacts or photos are featured.
