Diagnosis and Treatment of Bipolar Disorder in Children and Adolescents Dr. Robert Kowatch, director of hte Pediatric Mood Disorders Program at CCHMC spoke on One Brain Many Disorders Web Conference (2001) produced by the Council for Neuroscience Education, available at: http://ceneonline.com/webcasts/psych/video6 (You must have Windows Media Player to hear audio portion of this Web conference. Download Windows Media Player free at http://www.microsoft.com Bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness) is a serious but treatable medical illness that occurs in all age groups. It is a disorder of the brain marked by extreme changes in mood, energy and behavior. Symptoms may be present since infancy or early childhood, or may suddenly emerge in adolescence or adulthood. Until recently, a diagnosis of the disorder was rarely made in childhood. Child psychiatrists can now recognize and treat bipolar disorder in very young children. Early intervention and treatment offer the best chance for children with pediatric bipolar disorder to achieve mood stability, gain the best possible level of wellness and develop normally. Proper treatment can minimize the adverse effects of this illness on the lives of these children and their families.

Peer Support is about having relationships with others in new and different ways that promote growth, recovery and wellness. WRAP is about living in new and different ways that promote growth, recovery and wellness. By combining the two, the skills and strategies that we discover in peer support can become part of our WRAP and the skills and strategies we discover as we learn about and use WRAP assist us in peer Support. The combination of WRAP and Peer Support can be very powerful in helping us grow, learn from each other and challenge each other beyond what we thought we were capable of. Using some of the peer support theory, we can begin to use WRAP to help each other discover the context within which we've learned about ourselves, and then help each other develop plans that build a new "story".

Manic Depression: How to Live While Loving a Manic Depressive describes what it is like to live with a manic depressive (also know as bipolar disorder), and more importantly, how to live one's own life at the same time. Much has been written about the manic depressive or bipolar, but precious little on those around the dysfunctional individual. The author, Lynn Bradley, chronicles the various ups and downs that make these people so interesting. That same trait also makes them very difficult to live with. When they're up, they're charming, vivacious, romantic—exciting! When they're down, nothing seems to go right. After 30 years of coping, and doing it pretty well, through all sorts of coping and illness, therapy and communicating, finally getting it right, Bradley decided to show others what really works. This isn't in the psychiatrists' workbooks, or in the general all about manic depression books. It what really works, day in and day out, to maintain sanity and equilibrium in spite of one's crazy loved one. After all, if you love them, you either have to leave them or figure out what to do with them, right? So Bradley reviewed what worked, how to make it work, and what to do when it doesn't work. Seems simple, doesn't it?

Manic Depression and Creativity
Many recognized geniuses had creative capacities that were driven by bouts of manic intensity followed by the depths of mind-numbing despair. From Plato, who originated the idea of inspired mania, to Beethoven, Dickens, Newton, Van Gogh, and today's popular creative artists and scientists who've battled manic depression, this intriguing work examines creativity and madness in mystery, myth, and history. Demonstrating how manic depression often becomes the essential difference between talent and genius, Hershman and Lieb offer valuable insights into the many obstacles and problems this illness poses for highly creative people. Lieb critiques the wave of new books on depression as well as those on creativity to determine how far we have come in our understanding of this complex illness. The authors also explode the myth that suffering is essential to creativity. Guides for the manic depressive are suggested to reduce emotional pain and personal problems while increasing productivity. Julian Lieb, a psychiatrist in private practice and former director of the Dana Psychiatric Clinic at Yale-New Haven Hospital, and D. Jadlow Hershman authored

Recognizing Depression and Its Symptoms
Depression is one of the symptoms associated with a range of mood disorders including bipolar disorder, postpartum depression, and major depression. Many of these disorders also include other symptoms such as mania, anxiety, and, on the extreme end, psychosis. Because depression is often used casually to describe sadness, recognizing true symptoms of depression is difficult. Only one of the many mood disorders, clinical depression affects 9.5 percent of adult Americans. Latest News Second-Generation Antidepressants Equally Effective

There is an increase in frequency of bipolar disorder (also known as manic-depressive disorder) among patients with autoimmune thyroid problems. If you or someone in your family has manic or hypomanic episodes manifested by days or weeks of feeling hyperactive, excitable, and euphoric followed by days or weeks of depression with significant fatigue and sleep or appetite disturbances that may interfere with your normal activities, your physician may offer you medication to control your mood swings and treat your bipolar disorder. Your physician will likely measure your thyroid hormone within two to four weeks after starting Lithium. But if a psychiatrist starts your Lithium he or she may not know that you have a thyroid problem. Therefore you should be sure to tell the doctor that you do have a thyroid disorder and need your thyroid level checked to be sure there is no effect of the Lithium on thyroid hormone production.

Bipolar Disorder
Introduction
Bipolar disorder, also known as manic-depressive illness, is a brain disorder that causes unusual shifts in a person's mood, energy, and ability to function. Different from the normal ups and downs that everyone goes through, the symptoms of bipolar disorder are severe. They can result in damaged relationships, poor job or school performance, and even suicide.
