Manic depression causes mood swings US scientists have identified a gene mutation that causes manic depression in as many as one in 10 patients. The gene, GRK3, plays an important role in regulating the way the brain responds to chemicals such as dopamine which are known to control mood. The mutation, discovered by a team from the University of California, San Diego, occurs in the gene's on-off switch. Our hope is that discovery of genetic defects that cause bipolar disorder will lead to new drugs that can be directed to those specific genes
Dr John Kelsoe This may mean that the gene is activated inappropriately, or turned off when it should be working. The researchers believe the mutation causes those who carry it to become hypersensitive to dopamine - leading to extremes of mood. Manic depression, known technically as bipolar disorder, is a complex condition. Patients veer between barely-controlled euphoria and feeling very down.

One in 100 people has bipolar disorder
A drug currently used to treat schizophrenia could also help millions of people with manic depression. Results from a major clinical trial suggest quetiapine is an effective treatment for those with bipolar disorder. The drug, which is manufactured by AstraZeneca, and sold under the brand name Seroquel, works well if it is used in combination with mood stabilising medication.
It might become another option for people who have bipolar disorder
Dr Tony Cleare, Institute of Psychiatry Experts said the trial paved the way for the drug to be used as an alternative treatment for people with manic depression. Professor Gary Sachs from Harvard Medical School in the United States who headed the study said the drug was more effective than some existing treatments. Existing drugs "Current treatment options for patients with bipolar disorder are limited. Commonly used therapies involving mood stabilisers are not effective for all patients and can be associated with troublesome side effects," he said.

We get it already: looking down from a roof is also a way of keeping the world at a distance. And distance is the disease that a cluster of upper-crust New Yorkers attempt to let from their blood over one fraught 24-hour period in a Manhattan autumn. As a friend remarked, coming out of the theatre: “It’s Crash , but everybody’s white.”

Joseph J. Schildchild, a psychiatrist at Harvard Medical School in Boston, and his colleagues charted the turbulent psychological histories of 15 mid-20th-century abstract expressionists of the New York School, only one of whom is still alive. The researchers made psychiatric diagnoses based primarily on the artist's medical records, known suicide attempts, and evidence of periodic inability to work or function socially. Four artists - Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, Philip Guston, and William Baziotes - suffered recurring bouts of severe depression. Two others - Arshile Gorky and David Motherwell - suffered milder forms of depression and mania. Similar conditions probably also afflicted Franz Klein and David Smith, notes Schildkraut's group.

    Depression and Bipolar Disorder
    pdf version
Problems and misfortunes are a part of life. Everyone experiences unhappiness, and many people may become depressed temporarily when things don't go as they would like. Experiences of failure commonly result in temporary feelings of worthlessness and self-blame, while personal losses cause feelings of sadness, disappointment and emptiness. Such feelings are normal, and they usually pass after a short time. This is not the case with depressive illness. WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF DEPRESSIVE ILLNESS? Depression becomes an illness, or clinical depression, when the feelings described above are severe, last for several weeks, and begin to interfere with one's work and social life. Depressive illness can change the way a person thinks and behaves, and how his/her body functions. Some of the signs to look for are:
    • feeling worthless, helpless or hopeless

          Manic Depression / Bipolar Disorder
          What is manic depression?
Manic depression, also known as bipolar disorder, is classified as a type of affective disorder or mood disorder that goes beyond the day's ordinary ups and downs, becoming a serious medical condition and important health concern in this country. Manic depression is characterized by periodic episodes of extreme elation, elevated mood, or irritability (also called mania) countered by periodic, classic depressive symptoms. Depression is a mood disorder that involves a child's body, mood, and thoughts. It can affect and disrupt eating, sleeping, or thinking patterns, and is not the same as being unhappy or in a "blue" mood, nor is it a sign of personal weakness or a condition that can be willed or wished away. Children with a depressive illness cannot merely "pull themselves together" and get better. Treatment is often necessary and many times crucial to recovery.
