I Love You Dad
On Wednesday, August 31, 2005 at 13:09 PDT my father, H. Peter Karen left us. While driving along State Route 76 near Lake Henshaw with his wife Virginia their car struck a tree killing both people. My dad was a hard man to talk to and we never did get to be friends which is the tragedy here. My dad served in WWII operating a tank and went on to work for Solar International as a Design Engineer on cooling systems for turbine powered generators. He retired to Borrego Springs, California. I don't know much more about my dad than this and it makes me sad that I will now never have that chance to get to know my dad. So long dad, you will be missed.
The Pathways of Bipolar Disorder
Episodes of mania and depression typically recur throughout a person's lifetime. Between the episodes, most people with Bipolar Disorder are to some degree free of symptoms. It is estimated 33% of the people diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder display residual symptoms, and about 1% experience chronic unremitting symptoms despite treatment. The good news is that people with Bipolar Disorder can and do lead healthy and productive lives when the illness is effectively treated. The bad news is that without treatment, the effects of Bipolar Disorder tend to worsen. Over time the patient may suffer more frequent (more rapid-cycling) and severe manic and depressive episodes than those experienced when the illness first appeared. In most cases, proper treatment can help reduce the frequency and severity of episodes and can help people with bipolar disorder maintain good quality of life.

Manic-Depression: Voices Of An Illness Listen to a selection from the program Narrated by Academy and Emmy Award winner Patty Duke, this is the first major documentary to feature people with manic-depressive illness telling their own stories in their own words. Manic Depression
(Bipolar Disorder)
Bipolar depression is also called bipolar disorder, manic-depression, and manic-depressive illness . When a person has bipolar disorder , his moods shift between two extremes. For a period of time the person experiences the symptoms of depression (the depressive phase), then his mood will shift into a period of mania (euphoria). In between these extremes, there may be a period of normal functioning. Mania is characterized by extreme elation and self-importance. During a manic phase a person will feel extreme irritability for people and occurrences that are felt to stand in his way. Energy, joy, and self-esteem are raised to irrational levels and a delusional pattern often follows. advertisement
Two to three million people suffer from bipolar depression. It usually begins during adolescence or early adulthood. Substance abuse and other mental illnesses are common in people with this disorder. In some people, bipolar disorder will follow a long course of major depression. On average, people diagnosed with bipolar disorder will experience roughly four episodes of mania or depression the ailment over the course of their lifetime. What It's Like Living With Bipolar Disorder It is certainly different now. In fact, Joseph is almost always out of the house. He only needs two to three hours sleep a night and he feels that he has the energy of a bull.

For the most comprehensive Bipolar Disorder information, welcome to the new HealthyPlace.com Bipolar Disorder Center Children and adults can suffer from bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression). The disease is something many people do not understand and something that stigmatizes people. "I started using drugs and alcohol as a teenager in an attempt to somehow "fix" what was wrong with me. Although I didn't understand it, I knew that I had mental problems." More than 2 million American adults have bipolar disorder. It typically develops in late adolescence or early adulthood. However, some people have their first bipolar symptoms during childhood, and some develop them late in life. It is often not recognized as an illness, and people may suffer for years before it is properly diagnosed and treated. For those who have already been diagnosed with manic depression and are in treatment, we want to help you learn as much as you can about bipolar disorder and to offer you support in your recovery. We want to give you up-to-date information about what bipolar disorder is (and what it isn't).

    Bipolar Disorder Diagnosis and Symptoms
Table of Contents The First Steps Towards Proper Diagnosis The first step in getting treatment for bipolar disorder is getting a correct diagnosis. This can be a more difficult than it might seem, because the symptoms of bipolar disorder can be similar at times to other major brain disorders, such as schizophrenia, schizo-affective disorder, ADHD, or major depression. Because many regular family doctors may not be very familiar with recognizing psychiatric disorders like bipolar, it is important to see a good psychiatrist that is experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of bipolar disorder.

Welcome to the Princeton University student web project on the relationship between manic depression (also known as bipolar disorder) and creativity. This project was produced for MOL 427/WWS 462 Biotechnology and its Social Impact For centuries, historians have noted the alarming number of artists, poets, and musicians who exhibited periods of immense productivity and creativity coupled with long bouts of torment and depression. However, little has been done scientifically to establish any sort of correlation or causality between mental illness and creativity. The recent groundbreaking work of Kay Jamison and others has sparked intense debate concerning the implications of such a disorder for the individual and society. It has been claimed that 50% of poets, 38% of musician, 20% of painters, and large portions of those in other creative fields have manic depression. On this site you will find:

Manic Depression and the New Year
    by
    Dr. Peter Melgaard Thompson
Most scientists studying Bipolar Illness agree that this is genetic illness. That is, it runs in families and is passed on though the genes. It has an incidence of about 1%, or 1 out of 100 people in the general population. In families with this genetic problem the incidence is much higher. In identical twins, if one twin has Bipolar Illness, then there is 70% chance that the other identical twin will also have it. As in Major Depression there are very good treatments, in this case not with antidepressants but with mood stabilizers. The oldest and most studied is lithium. More recently, the anti-seizure medications have been shown to have anti-manic properties. In most cases these medications eliminate manic behavior within two weeks and greatly reduce the possibility of having another mania. Lithium is a salt, and is usually taken 2-3 times a day. It is generally a safe medication with little long-term side effects. On the short-term side there are many side effects. The most life threatening is overdose or dehydration. This is because high blood levels can be toxic to the heart. Patients on lithium should have their blood levels checked weekly to every other week. The most common side effects are nausea, weight gain, acne, and thirst. The other group of medicines that are effective in treating mania are the anti-seizure medications. The best studied of this group are carbamazepine (Tegretol) and valproate acid (Depakene or Depakote). These medications seem to work best in patients that cannot tolerate the side effects of lithium or where lithium is ineffective. This group tends to be a subgroup of bipolar patients - the rapid cyclers and dysphoric manics. A rapid cycler is a bipolar patient who goes through four complete cycles a year (manic, depressed and normal mood). The patient with dysphoric mania is characterized by having symptoms of both mania and depression at the same time. As with lithium, weekly or bimonthly monitoring of blood levels are required. The most common side effects are nausea and weight gain.
