B IPOLAR D ISORDER (MANIC DEPRESSION) Bipolar Disorder is a type of mood disorder with marked changes in mood between extreme elation or happiness and severe depression . The periods of elation are termed mania. During this phase, the teenager has an expansive or irritable mood, can become hyperactive and agitated, can get by with very little or no sleep, becomes excessively involved in multiple projects and activities, and has impaired judgment. A teenager may indulge in risk taking behaviors, such as sexual promiscuity and anti-social behaviors. Some teenagers in a manic phase may develop psychotic symptoms ( grandiose delusions and hallucinations ). For a description of the depressive phase see depression . Bipolar disorder generally occurs before the age of 30 years and may first develop during adolescence. For additional information see the following Facts for Families

What is Bipolar Disorder?
Until recently, bipolar disorder was known as manic depression. The word bipolar is now used to indicate the 2 poles, or extremes, that characterize the disorder. Bipolar disorder can affect a person's ability to experience a normal range of mood. If you picture a globe, the North Pole would be mania , and the South Pole would be depression . Every time you experience symptoms at one pole for at least 1 week, it is called an episode. Experiencing 4 or more episodes of mania and/or depression in a year is called rapid-cycling bipolar disorder. Hypomania , Depression, and Mixed Mood
Types of Mood Episodes Associated With Bipolar Disorder
Manic Episode (Mania) is a distinct period during which there is an abnormally and constantly elevated, expansive, or irritable mood, lasting at least 1 week.

The things that I will talk about are things that mean alot to me. And I hope that I could help someone out by talking about the things no one else will. Maybe along the way I can learn to stand tall and just be ME! Me

I keep a bag right with me everywhere I go, In case I might need to wear it, so ME doesn't show.
I'm so afraid to show you ME, afraid of what you'll do,
You might laugh at ME, or say mean things...
Or I might lose you.
I'd like to take my bag off, to let you look at ME.
I want you to try to understand, and please,
love what you see.
So, if you'll be patient and close your eyes,
I'll pull it off slow.
Please understand how much it hurts, to let the real ME show. Now my bag is off. I feel naked! Bare! So cold! If you still love all that you see, you are my friend, pure as gold. I want to save my bag and hold it in my hand. I need to keep it handy in case someone doesn't understand.

'When I'm in a manic phase, I feel as though I am capable of anything and everything. This can be an amazing feeling, but I sometimes get frustrated and angry with people. Ideas flow constantly and quickly, as if my brain is on fast-forward. Everything happening in the world has significance in my life. But when I'm depressed, it's as if I'm completely crushed and living in slow motion. I feel capable of nothing and just want to end it all.' This booklet is aimed at anyone who has been given a diagnosis of manic depression, and for their family and friends. It describes what is known about the causes and discusses the consequences of the diagnosis, what options are available to people, and where they can get help. It also looks into what people can do to help themselves. What is manic depression?

Bipolar Disorder
Tempering the Mania of Manic Depression
by Stephen L. Bernhardt
Bipolar Disorder - episodes of mania.
Any discussion of the process of bipolar disorder and mania cannot be entirely divorced from a discussion of the depressive response. Within any episode of mania lurks the possibility, the likelihood of impending depression. There are certain techniques and exercises which I have identified while dealing with my own periods of bipolar disorder mania which help temper the mania and thereby lessen the impact and severity of the subsequent depressive response. It is essential that you have read my article on Emotional Thought Stopping and are familiar with the concept and my suggestions for its use, before you attempt this exercise. I assume that if you are reading this in order to help temper your periods of bipolar disorder mania that this is not your first episode. Look back at your previous situation just prior to those episodes and see if you can identify if there was some event which triggered the episode and begin to identify how you felt at the start of the episode. It is important to be able to recognize these periods as early as possible so that you can begin this tempering exercise before it reaches a crisis stage. This is especially true if you begin your episodes with a euphoric feeling.

Welcome!
Set in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina, His High Places Christian Counseling (HHP) was organized in July of 1980 by Sam and Anita McMillan. His High Places is a non-profit Christian ministry. Our approach is Christ and Scripture-centered. The principles apply inter-denominationally. The McMillan's are both licensed professional counselors and charter members of the American Association of Christian Counselors (AACC). Tom Pickles, licensed clinical social worker and member of AACC, as well as several other carefully trained Spiritual Directors complete our team. All of our staff are in personal accountability groups as well as being responsible to the HHP board of directors. We provide Christ-centered spiritual direction to individuals and couples, and we specialize in pastoral care. A typical stay includes 6 nights and 7 days with twice-daily sessions for diagnostic listening, teaching, worship, and deep prayer to address root issues. There are also assignments in specific books, audio and video tapes, guided recreation, good food, unstructured "reflection time" and lots of prayer. Out of this balanced approach the Holy Spirit is free to minister what is needed and direct us in a "game plan" for a changed life back home. http://www.electroboy.com/manicdepression.htm
Manic Depression
Manic depression is the chronic illness which I have battled for almost twenty years. But every day, I am learning how to better live with it. Sometimes manic depression is referred to as bipolar disorder . Take your pick. It's an emotional disorder which is often overlooked by the sufferer, friends, family and sometimes even by mental health professionals. And perhaps the most frightening fact is that the suicide rate during a manic depressive episode is extremely high.
Hippocrates wrote about moods in the 5th century B.C. as a medical condition. More than 600 years later, Greek physician, Areteus recognized that both mania and depression could cycle within the same patient. But it wasn't until the end of the l9th century when a German psychiatrist, Emil Kraepelin coined the term "manic depression." The statistics are startling - - more than 2 million Americans suffer from the illness and millions of others are undiagnosed.
There is no standard pattern for a manic depressive's behavior. Some go from moderate to severe depression and move on to a full-blown episode of mania and then back to the depression before returning to a "normal state." Needless to say, this "flip flopping" of moods is usually very destructive and patients are frequently hospitalized and unable to work. The families of manic depressives are forced to deal with the consequences of their loved ones. My parents and sister suffered through a federal court conviction, a prison term, house arrest and ultimately electroshock treatment with me. The "more lucky" manic depressives are the ones who suffer with hypomania - - a mild form of mania, an illness with which they pretty much still function at their jobs or in relationships.
