Los Manatees are a group of musicians who play a style known as "dreadneck" music. It is a blend of country, blues, rock, and reggae. This genre has also been referred to as: "bottleneck dub". Influences include: Robert Johnson, Robert Zimmerman, Robert Hunter, and Robert Nesta Marley. Yesireebob! Born on Halloween 1985 in the hills of Pennsylvania, Los Manatees have been performing for twenty years. For the first few years they were simply an acoustic duo using drum machines, sequencers, and samples. During this period they released two live albums and two live videos. In the early nineties the duo went electric, added a real drummer and bassist, and released their first studio CD, "High Water". Soon after adding a keyboardist and a second drummer/percussionist, the band released their double CD, "Live Medicine".

Manatees are large solitary marine mammals looking something like a cross between a seal and a whale. They are very gentle, and have no natural enemies, as they eat only aquatic plants. This film introduces the viewer to the manatee with stunning underwater cinematography showing all aspects of their lives, from eating, sleeping and playing, to nursing their young and showing their curiosity towards humans. This natural curiosity causes many manatees to die each year because of laceration by boat propellers. Furthermore, loss of habitat is taking its toll on the manatees at an alarming rate. It is now believed that there are perhaps less than 2500 of these animals remaining in the United States, and that extinction could come as early as the year 2000, unless steps are taken immediately. I spotted the Manatee family about a mile north of the US 98 bridge. When I saw them I was the only boat in the area. As Florida Law prohibits harassing or disturbing manatees, I paddled to their left and anchored myself in the hydrilla near the left bank. Sitting still, I began to take their pictures. They began moving towards my red kayak. The family was in no hurry and seem to be interested in the kayak, coming up and gently examining me and my kayak. Introduction to the Sirenia Dugongs and Manatees Sirenians are slow and passive mammals of tropical and sub-tropical waters. Their large thick bodies betray their heritage as relatives of elephants. There are only five living species of sirenians, known collectively as "sea-cows", including the dugong and the manatees. Until about 1770, an additional species known as the Stellar Sea-cow ( Hydrodamalis ) existed along the Eastern Pacific coast, but the last of these were hunted to extinction for their meat and fat in by American explorers. The West Indian Manatees are currently in danger of also becoming extinct. The first Sirenians appeared in the early Eocene in Europe, but by the close of this epoch, they had spread to tropical Asia and North America. Dugongs were the prevalent group in the Caribbean and Mediterranean until the Late Miocene, when all but the Indo-Pacific species went extinct. Subsequently, the manatees of South America entered these areas in the Pliocene. These slow-moving marine mammals look huge, but don't worry, they are among the gentlest members of the animal kingdom. After decades of human contact, the harmless vegetarians have grown accustomed to people. But before you swim with the sirenians, learn a few things about their behavior. Manatees spend most of their time eating, sleeping and moving from one patch of weeds to the next. Like people, they have personalities. Some like humans, others don't. Be aware of this. If a manatee swims away, don't chase it. Use snorkel gear. Leave your scuba tanks at home, because air bubbles frighten manatees. If possible, wear a wet suit. You'll be more comfortable, hence more patient. You are more likely to have a pleasant encounter with a manatee if you don't rush it.
