Toxic Surfs
Janet Raloff On a warm, sunny day, you can hear the presence of a "red tide" of toxic algae on popular Florida beaches, says Barbara Kirkpatrick. It's not the roar of coastal waves or the gurgle of flowing water, she explains, but "one continuous cough," as thousands of sunbathers and swimmers respond to airborne irritants that the algae expel in the surf. RED IN NAME ONLY. Because Karenia brevis cells (inset) aren't red, substantial blooms of the microscopic algae create a "red tide" that's actually a muddy yellow-green or brown.
Karenia brevis , turns water yellow-green. Some traditional signs of the bloom were in evidence on beaches and in canals. Most obviously, manatees were dying. By the end of spring, officials had retrieved more than 4 dozen sea cow carcasses, weighing up to 1,000 pounds apiece. As in the past, health officials had warned people not to eat local shellfish. It's long been known that their accumulated

March 29, 1997
Florida's manatees' future: Grim or golden?
by C. Mlot I n 1996, biologists counted 2,600 manatees lolling in the coastal waters of Florida a record number. They also counted a record number of carcasses: 415, including about 150 poisoned after the bloom of a toxin-producing marine microbe, or red tide, last spring. This year, after the mild winter and fewer reported carcasses, researchers expected to find an even bigger population. Instead, the aerial count of the endangered animals dropped to 2,229. The difficulties of counting the elusive manatees have prompted biologists to use computer models to fashion a picture of the population's dynamics. One such model, described in the April Conservation Biology, is the first to project the animals' future in the long haul. If birth and death rates and other conditions hold steady, the population should remain stable over the 1,000-year time frame of the model. Just a 10 percent increase in the usual death rate of about 150 per year, however, could gradually eliminate manatees in the United States. That translates into only about one additional death per year in each of 13 key counties in the state, says zoologist Thomas J. O'Shea of the Biological Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey in Fort Collins, Colo. At that rate, "the cumulative impact could be extinction." O'Shea developed the analysis with Miriam Marmontel and Stephen R. Humphrey of the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Introduction
The manatee ( man -uh-tee), a mammal, also known as a gentle giant has been chosen by your school as a mascot. Come search the warm coastal waters of Florida and learn about the manatee as it rises toward the surface to greet you.
Task
You must help you school discover the mysteries of the manatee. A group of two people will be working together to learn all they can about the manatee. I will give you directions to follow. One person will be the computer specialist and the other person will be the recorder. Each group will be responsible for one card of information for a HyperStudio presentation on manatees.
Resources
You may use any books, encyclopedias or other references available in the classroom and media center. You will also find these Internet sites helpful. Florida Manatees- http://pelo tes.jea.com/Manatee.htm

On the Expedition You will help gather basic data on manatee distribution, behavior, habitat, travel corridors, and help identify individuals. You will spend most of your days in small boats among a labyrinth of mangrove islands, helping conduct manatee and habitat surveys, following individual manatees, and collecting environmental data. Using a Global Positioning System (GPS), you will map manatee locations, movements and behaviors within the study area. On other days, you may stay at camp, depending on team size, transcribing and reducing data. The Drowned Cayes lie just three kilometers west of the world's second-largest barrier reef and teem with wildlife, such as hermit crabs, night herons, reef fish, ospreys, and dolphins. The tropical sunrises, sunsets, and night sky are breathtaking. On your day off, you can visit Belize City, enjoy the zoo, the baboon sanctuary, a Maya ruin, or go canoeing.

Sirenia are mammals which means they are warm blooded, they have hair on their bodies (at some stage in their lives), and they give birth to live offspring. Sirenians spend their whole lives in water. What does the word "Sirenia" mean? The word "Sirenia" came from the word "siren." "Sirens" are legendary Greek sea beauties that lured sailor in to the sea. It is thought that old-time mermaid sightings were actually sirenians rather than mythical half women, half fish. The sirenia section of the NMML web site is not yet ready for public viewing. In the meantime, please be patient and keep checking back. Manatees are always growing new teeth, which replace old ones that eventually fall out!
The Florida Manatee
With a face only its mother could love, a body able to discourage any predators just because of its large size and the knack for gaining popularity even as its population decreases, the Florida manatee has become an icon of Florida wildlife. In January 2000, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) counted only a little more than 2,200 manatees surviving. In 1999, the all-time high death toll was 268, and within the first three months of this year, 100 had already died. The Florida manatee is on the brink of extinction. Florida has passed many laws to protect manatees - beginning in 1893. Since 1907, a $500 fine has been imposed on anyone who harms or kills a manatee. The manatee itself was listed as an endangered species in 1967, and protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 and by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) treaty in 1973. The State of Florida was designated a refuge and sanctuary of manatees by the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act in 1978, yet many years later, the manatee still faces the risk of being wiped off the face of the earth. A good look at the manatee's characteristics, behavior and habitat reveals why.
Non-Aggressive and Slow-Moving Creatures
The Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostrus) is a subspecies of the West Indian Manatee - part of the sirenian order of mammals that includes manatees and dugongs around the world. Closely related to the elephant, the manatee is Florida’s state marine mammal. "Gentle giants," as they are called, manatees are herbivorous, feasting daily on vegetation up to as much as 15% of their body weight, which includes very little fat. Averaging 10 feet long and 1,000 lbs., an adult manatee spends 6 to 8 hours eating, and the rest of the day resting or traveling.
