SAVE THE ENDANGERED MANATEE compiled by Dee Finney MANATEES AT STARRED LOCATIONS Also known as "the sea cow," the manatee is one of the most endangered marine mammals in coastal waters of the United States today. It is a large marine mammal with dark gray, wrinkled skin, paddle-like forelimbs, no hind limbs, and a large flat tail. This slow-moving mammal lives in both fresh and brackish waters and feeds on floating sea grasses and other sub-aquatic vegetation. The manatee has been listed as endangered since 1967 and continues to face serious threats from boat collisions and destruction or degradation of habitat caused by widespread development throughout the species' range in Florida. It is estimated that there are only about 3,2 00 manatees remaining in Florida's wild waters. In 2001, 81 manatees were killed by collisions with boats. Dear Defender, Despite thousands of emails, Governor Jeb Bush of Florida has signed SB 540, legislation that will harm endangered manatees. Pushed by the speed boat industry, this law weakens the Florida Manatee Sanctuary Act, and will lead to the death or injury of countless manatees from propellor blades. Please call Governor Bush's office at (850) 488-4441 to express your personal outrage.

Campaign in Belize against manatee hunts
Swim with the manatees 3.7MB/37 sec./320x240 1.3MB/37 sec./160x120 QuickTime movie January 31, 1998 Web posted at: 11:44 p.m. EDT (2344 GMT) BELIZE CITY, Belize (CNN) Environmentalists who monitor populations of endangered manatees say 1997 was the worst year in two decades for the sea-faring mammals, who populate shallow coastal waters from Florida to South America. Once numbering around 30,000, there are now just a few hundred remaining manatees, relatives of the elephant who feed on coastal grasses. One major threat to their survival comes from boats many manatee carry scars from collisions with propellers. But in Belize and other Latin American countries, the animals are also hunted for their meat and their unproven medicinal value as an aphrodisiac. But now, some Belizean villagers, supported by environmentalists from the United States, are on patrol, trying to stop the hunters. "We can see that attitudes are being changed," says Wil Maheia of the Belize Center for Environmental Studies. "We have people coming into our office telling us they have seen manatees recently or if they have seen some kind of suspicious behavior around the manatees."

Use the BACK button of your browser to return. Christopher Columbus was the first European to report seeing a manatee in the New World. To Columbus, and other sailors who had been at sea for a long time, manatees were reminiscent of mermaids the mythical half-fish, half-woman creatures of the ocean. Manatees are not fish, however, but marine mammals. The West Indian or Florida manatee (and sometimes called sea cow) is found primarily along the coast of Florida. Most adult manatees are about 10 feet long and weigh 800 to 1,200 pounds, although some larger than 12 feet and weighing as much as 3,500 pounds have been recorded. These "gentle giants" have a tough, wrinkled brown-to-gray skin that is continuously being sloughed off. Hair is distributed sparsely over the body. With stiff whiskers around its mouth, the manatee's face looks like a walrus without tusks. The manatee maneuvers through the water moving its paddle- like tail up and down and steering with its flippers. It is very agile for such a large animal, sometimes saulting and doing barrel rolls in the water.

Wildtracks.org Satellite Tracking Manatees A team of scientists, educators, government agencies, wildlife organizations, zoos and aquariums are studying manatees living in Florida and Belize to learn how people can ensure the survival of this marine mammal species.
The Manatee Rehabilitation Partnership (Partnership) was established in late 2001 and marks the beginning of a new era of cooperation in the manatee rehabilitation effort. Prior to the formation of the Partnership, state and federal agencies exclusively provided post-release monitoring for Florida manatee rehabilitated at permitted and contracted manatee rehabilitation facilities in Florida. Because it is difficult to maintain funding levels necessary to meet all of the escalating manatee conservation needs, these agencies are no longer able to bare sole responsibility to provide this service. However tracking the fate and health of rehabilitated and released manatees is essential to determining the successful contribution of the rehabilitation program to the recovery of Florida manatee population. The Belizean Manatee Project is a cooperative effort of Wildlife Trust, the Florida Marine Research Institute, Mote Marine Laboratory, USA Fish and Wildlife Service's Sirenia Project, the Belize Coastal Zone Management Authority, and others. Currently, we are following the travels of one female manatee living in Northern Lagoon, located between Gales Point Village and Belize City in central Belize.

Introduction
The newest residents of our Columbus Zoo are the manatees. The manatee is a docile animal that lives in the waters around Florida and is rapidly becoming extinct. You have been hired to help take care of these wonderful animals and part of your job is to know all about their habitat, feeding habits, and behaviors. You will then be able to conduct information sessions with the public that visits the Zoo.

ntroduction Task Resources ... Conclusion
Task
To assume your new job, you will need to: 1. Write a letter to the Zoo accepting the position that you have been offered and thank them for giving you the opportunity to work with the animals. 2. Gather information on the manatees that includes their habitat, eating habits, behaviors and the problems causing them to be on the endangered species list. After your reseach is completed, you will need to write a one page report on the manatees and prepare a presentation for the class. 3. Define the terms extinct and endangered.

Manatee Adoption
Daniel Elementary has adopted a manatee named Dana . She is about nine years old and lives in Florida in the winter and in the Gulf of Mexico in the summer. She had a calf named Dianne who is about four years old and Dana has a one-year-old calf now. We don't know yet if the new baby is a girl or boy. Manatee calves stay with their mothers for about two years. Manatees are endangered animals and their main enemy is motorboats. If you would like to know more about manatees or would like to adopt one, please visit the Save-the-Manatee Club web site. They also have educational information for teachers.
Ms. Peto and the Manatees
Ms. Peto, the a former Daniel tech specialist, got so hooked on manatees that she traveled to Crystal River, Florida in February, 1995 to swim with the manatees. They loved it when she scratched their backs and tummies. It is important to treat manatees with respect and to let them come over to you. You can endanger a manatee if you scare it or feed it.
