Two agile forelimbs with three to four toenails on each, which act like arms to help the manatee maneuver in shallow water, grasp and move food toward their mouths, and act like flippers during swimming. Thick and wrinkled skin with a rough texture - a bit jiggly under the neck and arms. Their skin reacts to touch, as their bodies are very muscular - contracting and changing shape slightly when scratched or tickled. Powerful upper lips which articulate to help maneuver food or dig through sediment.
SIZE : Average 9 to 10 feet long, weighing around 1,000 lbs.. Can grow as large as 13 feet and weigh more than 3,000 lbs. Calves are born weighing about 40 lbs, gaining about 700 lbs. during their first year.
BEHAVIOR : Gentle and slow-moving. Most of the time is spent eating vegetation (100-150 lbs. per day), resting, and traveling. On average manatees can travel about 40 to 50 miles a day, sometimes farther. Chessie, the famed manatee rescued from the cold waters of the Chesapeake Bay and returned to Florida, was tagged with a locating device which showed he traveled as far as Rhode Island during hot summer months.

All About Manatees
Sea Cows
Quiz
Manatees are aquatic mammals that are called sea cows (named this by Georg Wilhelm Steller, because they taste like beef). These plant eaters are slow swimmers; they have two flippers, each of which has three to four nails on the end (there are no external hind limbs). Short whiskers adorn the short, boxy snout. Manatees are closely related to the elephant and the hyrax (a small mammal that looks like a rodent)! Many years ago, there were legends that sailors, seeing manatees from a long distance, thought they were mermaids. SIZE
The average adult manatee grows to be about 10-12 feet (3-3.6 m) long and weighs about 1,000-1,800 pounds (450-800 kg). COLOR
When manatees are new-born, they are gray-black. Their skin quickly lightens to gray as they mature. Adults may also have barnacles and/or algae growing on the skin. BREATHING AND DIVING
Manatees breathe air through nostrils into their two lungs. Although they can stay underwater for up to 20 minutes, they usually surface every 5 minutes. Their nostrils are covered by flaps that close during dives.

Navy comes to aid of Florida manatees
Acoustic sensors designed to detect underwater land mines are being used to help protect endangered manatees By Environmental News Network staff A defense technology developed by the U.S. Navy to detect underwater land mines is coming to the aid of endangered manatees. About 3,000 manatees remain in the United States. Last year the number of manatee deaths was the second highest in history. While the majority of that mortality comes from disease, pollution and collisions with boats, Florida's underwater canal gates and locks have also been a significant cause of the species decline. Between 1974 and 1999, 145 manatees were crushed to death along their migration routes which cross the canal system. It's similar to getting slammed in an elevator door.

by David Salvesen Odyssey , whose mesmerizing songs lured wayward seafarers to their deaths. Unfortunately, now and in the past, seafarers have often been the ones killing manatees, a situation conservationists are struggling to control before these graceful, gentle mammals are gone. Manatees, along with their cousin the dugong, are also known as sea cows, and this name is apt. Like cows, manatees spend most of their time eating and resting, inhabiting shallow, slow-moving rivers, estuaries, bays, and canals rather than grassy pastures. For six to eight hours each day, manatees graze on floating vegetation, sea grasses, and freshwater plants. In that time, a manatee consumes an amount of vegetation equivalent to about 11 percent of its body weight. With the usually 10- to 12-foot-long manatees weighing anywhere from 800 to 3,500 pounds, that's between 88 and 385 pounds of greens a day.

Florida Manatee ( Trichechus manatus latirostrus Manatees are aquatic mammals. They breathe air; they have hair; they are warm-blooded; they don’t lay eggs; and they give milk to their babies. "Aquatic" (uh-kwa-tick) means that they live in the water. Because they live in the water, they are different from other mammals. Since fur gets heavy and cold when it is wet, manatees don’t need it. Instead, they have whiskers on their skin, and thick layers of fat keep them warm. The milk they give to their babies is very rich with fat, so the baby manatee can grow quickly and stay warm. Manatees usually come to the surface every 3-4 minutes to breathe fresh air. They sleep on the bottom and float up every 20 minutes for a breath. Cool manatees facts: Manatees are herbivores (ur-bi-vorz). This means they only eat plants like manatee grass, turtle grass, hydrilla, water hyacinth, and water lettuce. Sometimes small snails and water animals will be eaten along with the grass accidentally. This gives the manatees extra protein. Since manatees eat over 150 pounds of grass a day, their teeth wear down quickly. Because of this, manatees are always growing in new teeth in the back, so the old ones just fall out the front! Manatees migrate.

Manatees or sea cows (order Sirenia ) are large aquatic mammals that live in warm coastal waters and, during the winter, inland spring-fed rivers. The forelimbs are flippers; there are no hindlimbs. The tail, used for propulsion, is wide and flat. They are herbivores, eating only vegetation. Only four species exist, one of which lives in Florida.
Manatees can remain submerged for up to 15 minutes but usually surface to breathe every 3-5 minutes.
Manatees are docile creatures and have no natural predators. Recreational boat propellers account for many manatee injuries and deaths. American Scientist reports on a study, Manatees, Bioacoustics and Boats . that examined the hearing abilities of manatees and underwater acoustics and concludes with suggestions to reduce collisions.
PROTECTED

The Florida Manatee Trichechus manatus latirostris , is gray with a broad, square, bristled snout. It reaches a length of 8-14 feet and may weigh 600-2000 pounds (average 10', 1000 pounds).
Diet consists of sea- and bank grasses, mangrove, and submerged and floating vegetation.

editLink('skunkworks/.accounts/200310302352') 2005/09/18 17:54:51.360 GMT-4 By Phil Myers Kingdom: Animalia Phylum: Chordata Subphylum: Vertebrata Class: Mammalia Order: Sirenia Family: Trichechidae Members of this Family The three species that make up this family are placed in one genus, Trichechus . Manatees are found along the coast of the southeastern US, in the West Indies and adjacent parts of South America, in the Amazon and Orinoco drainages of South America, and tropical west Africa. Manatees are very large. Their maximum length may exceed 4 m, and their weight 1000 kg. They have a streamlined body; small and rounded head with a square, boxy snout; forelimbs flattened and webbed to form flippers, and a large, dorso-ventrally flattened tail fin or fluke. This fin has a single lobe. Their eyes are small, and the numerous large and thick vibrissae probably serve an important role in helping the animal detect its surroundings in the muddy waters that manatees seem to prefer. The flippers bear vestigial nails. Manatees are excellent swimmers, able to stay submerged for more than 15 minutes, but they are incapable of travelling on land. The lips of a manatee are deeply divided right from left, and the two sides work together during feeding, grasping vegetation (aided by the short, coarse bristles that line the outer surface of the lips) to bring in food.

Distribution: All living sirenians are found in warm tropical and subtropical waters. The range of the Florida Manatee is primarily peninsular Florida but extends as far north as Virginia and as far west as Mississippi. Coloration: Manatees are grayish-brown; organisms such as algae can grow on the skin of these slow moving animals giving them a green hue. Diet:
