Factoid:
Manatees were once mistaken for mermaids by sailors.
Status: Endangered
Population: The largest population of manatees is found in Florida, where approximately 2,000 individuals now live. Threats: Most manatees have a pattern of scars on their backs or tails from collisions with boats. Scientists use these patterns to identify individuals. But these collisions can be fatal for the manatee. Besides boating accidents, manatees have been found crushed or drowned in flood-control gates and also suffer from pollution and habitat loss.
Survival: Manatees are thought to live 50 to 60 years in the wild. Well known for their gentle, slow-moving nature, manatees have also been known to body surf or barrel roll when playing. They communicate by squealing under water to demonstrate fear, stress or excitement.
Manatees are herbivores and eat marine and freshwater plants.

    Understanding Manatees
Reprinted from The Wild Times Teacher Connection v3n3, Spring 1998. It is difficult to comprehend something as alien as a manatee if one has not experienced them. Especially difficult for children is interpreting the abstractions of the size and weight of such a large animal. The following suggestions are presented as activities in which you and your students may engage to de-mystify these unusual creatures.
How many children does it take to equal the weight of an average manatee?
Children may be sensitive about their individual weight, but by submitting their weight on a secret ballot, an average weight for your age group can be computed. We suggest that children be presented with the class sum rather than the individual weights. They can then compute the mean average by dividing that sum by the number of children in the class. Once an average child weight is arrived at, the children can easily use that weight as a divisor in finding the number of children that equal the weight of the average 1200 pound (500 kg) manatee. To make this number more concrete, gather that many children together near a actual size model of a manatee.

Monday, Aug. 16, 2004 The Miami Manatees minor-league hockey team didn't have much success luring South Florida fans it didn't even last a whole season at Miami Arena. Turns out the team wasn't much better at paying its bills, says the Miami Sports and Exhibition Authority. Authority Executive Director and CEO James Jenkins announced at a Friday board meeting the team owes the city roughly $130,000 in back rent and other fees. Two $25,000 checks the city collected from the team bounced, Jenkins said. Read full Story!
    Bad Debts
Wednesday, May 19, 2004 David Waronker , the Miami Manatees owner, has yet to refund money to Manatees Season Ticket holders. Eleven home games remained unplayed at the time the Manateees folded. Season Ticket holders were told to request refunds and were promised they would recieve their refund checks "soon". More than half a year has passed and refunds remain notably absent from former ticket holders' mailboxes. A recent article in the Orlando Weekly also revealed that Waronker owes $150,000 in back rent to the Orlando Centroplex for the Orlando Seals use of the T.D. Waterhouse Centre. Waronker has announced that his Seals team would play in the newly formed Southern Professional Hockey League next season, but Miami fans have a warning for potential Orlando Season Ticket purchasers: "You could be next!"

    Quiz
Manatees are aquatic mammals that are called sea cows (named this by Georg Wilhelm Steller, because they taste like beef). These plant eaters are slow swimmers; they have two flippers, each of which has three to four nails on the end (there are no external hind limbs). Short whiskers adorn the short, boxy snout. Manatees are closely related to the elephant and the hyrax (a small mammal that looks like a rodent)! Many years ago, there were legends that sailors, seeing manatees from a long distance, thought they were mermaids. SIZE
The average adult manatee grows to be about 10-12 feet (3-3.6 m) long and weighs about 1,000-1,800 pounds (450-800 kg). COLOR
When manatees are new-born, they are gray-black. Their skin quickly lightens to gray as they mature. Adults may also have barnacles and/or algae growing on the skin. BREATHING AND DIVING
Manatees breathe air through nostrils into their two lungs. Although they can stay underwater for up to 20 minutes, they usually surface every 5 minutes. Their nostrils are covered by flaps that close during dives.

    FLORIDA (WEST INDIAN) MANATEE
    Remaining Population: Unknown Range: Oceans
Although their bulbous, whiskery face makes this hard to believe today, manatees are probably the source of legends about mermaids. Their humanlike eyes must have captivated the early European sailors who caught fleeting glimpses of them swimming in the warm waters of the West Indies. In the 17th century, mermaids were depicted with their male companions, mermen. Although the legends of these half-fish, half-human creatures have lived on for hundreds of years and are still popular today, it is uncertain whether the manatees that inspired the legends will live on much longer. Only a concerted effort to protect them in their marine habitat will save manatees from extinction. Range and Status Manatees inhabit warm waters of the Western Atlantic from Florida to Brazil where they live in coastal waters, freshwater inlets, and river mouths. Warm Florida waters have provided wintering refuges for manatees in natural warm water springs. They also are attracted to the warm water outflow from power plants, where on occasion a manatee has gotten stuck and rescue efforts have made the evening news.
