DINO LAND PALEONTOLOGY INTERVIEWS LARRY AGENBROAD The Jarkov Mammoth, the famed specimen Larry Agenbroad studied. Last October news agencies around the world were abuzz with the discovery of a nearly complete frozen mammoth carcass, found in the Siberian permafrost by a team of French, Dutch, and American scientists. The actual mammoth carcass was first discovered in 1997, when French explorer Bernard Buigues learned of the discovery of mammoth tusks by a group of local natives. Buigues explored the site they mentioned, and was astonished to find signs of a near complete mammoth carcass. Unfortunately, due to strange, odd, and drastic weather conditions, the excavation of this carcass had to be delayed for two years, until 1999, when Buigues and his team finally announced their discovery to the world. The discovery, nicknamed the Jarkov Mammoth, became an overnight hit, making the front page of several newspapers around the world and garnering spots in Time Magazine and on several American television programs. Much of the excitement was due to the thrilling possibility that the mammoth could be cloned, a somewhat outlandish, but media popular idea. The entire idea of cloning ancient animals extended back well before the first successful cloning of a living animal was performed. But, the notion gained much publicity after the 1993 release of Jurassic Park, the box office hit which starred cloned dinosaurs. Suddenly, this idea seemed more plausible to the public-but could science do it?

    A Children's Book With Tusks
Book Review: Mammoths: Ice Age Giants, by Larry D. Agenbroad and Lisa Nelson, Lerner Publications Company, Minneapolis, 2002. ISBN 0-8225-0470-7 For an insulated science such as paleontology, it is amazing to see the sheer diversity of popular books available on the subject. Most of these books, unfortunately, are either aimed at the young grade school student or the educated, scientifically-literate lay reader. There is a dearth of accurate, well-written paleontological literature designed for the middle school and junior high student, and this is a shame. One recent book, however, is a welcome addition to this disheartening gap. Mammoths: Ice Age Giants, written by Dr. Larry Agenbroad and Lisa Nelson, is a unique new volume released by famous children’s book publisher Lerner Publications. It is nearly 120 pages long, but presented in an easy-to-read manner. The book is short on technical terms, and instead relies on a terse glossary to introduce the reader to any important, yet still scientific, words. A variety of vivid photos and artwork fills the pages, and the text discusses everything from what mammoths were to how mammoths are studied, including a nice examination of new DNA techniques that are certain to be the future of mammoth research. Mammoths: Ice Age Giants is written by the all-star tag team of Agenbroad and Nelson, a paleontologist and a fine journalist. Agenbroad is well-known in paleontological circles for his detailed studies of specimens found at the Mammoth Site in South Dakota, and is likely more famous in the public arena for his work that was documented on the Discovery Channel special “Raising the Mammoth.” Nelson, on the other hand, is an experienced journalist who caught the “mammoth bug” after being assigned to cover some of Agenbroad’s discoveries.

are described and highlighted with examples of living things that occurred here in the past. Among the unique and important fossils exhibited here are a 19,000-year-old toothed bird, a Miocene giant toothed whale, and the Channel Islands pygmy mammoths.
The most complete Pygmy Mammoth skeleton ever found inspired the centerpiece of the Geology and Paleontology Hall a re-creation of the skeleton as it appeared in situ . Adjacent to this is an exhibit with an articulated Pygmy Mammoth skeleton and a painting of a full-sized Columbian Mammoth and American Mastodon. Columbian Mammoths swam to Santarosae, a large island off our coast during Pleistocene times. As sea levels rose and Santarosae became several smaller islands, the mammoths evolved into a pygmy form better suited to survival in the limited habitat.
Channel Islands Pygmy Mammoth ( Mammuthus exilis
A fantastic new discovery has been brought to the forefront of science with the recent discovery of the most complete skeleton to date of a Channel Islands Pygmy Mammoth ( Mammuthus exilis ). The skeleton was excavated on Santa Rosa Island in August of 1994 by a team of National Park Service researchers led by Dr. Larry Agenbroad, a Museum Research Associate.

    Archaeologist
Archaeologists are scientists who learn about prehistoric cultures by studying the tools and other remains left by ancient peoples. Artifacts (objects manipulated and used by humans), such as spear points, pottery, ornaments, and grinding stones are studied in conjunction with animal and plant remains recovered from places where people lived long ago.
    Archaeology
Archaeology is the study of prehistoric cultures through the study of the remains they have left behind. (See also: Archaeologist
    AMS (Accelerator Mass Spectrometry)
A form of radiocarbon dating that requires only a very small amount of sample material (bone, charcoal, etc.). This technique involves the use of a mass spectrometer to directly measure the amount of radioactive carbon in a sample. This technique was used on a bone from the first Tolo Lake mammoth specimen excavated in 1994. (See also: Carbon-14 Dating
    BP
BP is used by researchers to date an archaeological site, fossils, or time period. It literally means "Before Present", which means the date being referenced is based on the current year. For example, 10,000 BP refers to 10,000 years before today's date.
    Carbon-14 Dating (Radiocarbon dating)
All living things take in carbon. Some carbon contains small amounts of energy, or radiation. These small amounts of radioactive carbon we call Carbon-14 (C-14). At death, the amount of radioactive carbon begins to decay at a constant rate. Radiocarbon or C-14 dating involves measuring the tiny amounts of radiation released from one-living material. These measurements can tell us how old the once-living material is, up to 100,000 years ago. The older the material, the less radiation there is left to release. Bone, wood, cloth, shell, and other materials can all be C-14 dated.

An excellent site on the Pleistocene mammals of the midwestern United States with a general introduction to the age and its animals and separate sections on mastodons, mammoths, dire wolfs, ground sloths, saber-toothed cats and some othe not so famous extinct animals of North America. Fossils of the Rancho La Brea Tar Pits . George C. Page Museum. The Page Museum is the museum located at the Rancho La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles. This wonderful site has extensive information about this famous Pleistocene locality along with information about the animals that became trapped in the pits, how the fossilization occurred, the museum, and much more. However the most fascinating part is on the various mammals that became caught in the asphalt including mammoths, mastodons, saber-toothed cats, dire wolves, and more. Highly recommended. The La Brea Tar Pits . University of California at Berkeley Museum of Paleontology. An introduction to the La Brea Tar Pits, the fossil animals and plants that have been found there, and the history of the regions.
