The following is a list of what are currently considered the most toxic snake venoms. It is important to keep in mind that regarding venoms, the most deadly snake, and the most dangerous snake are two entirely different concepts. Some of the snakes with the most toxic venom, i.e., the most deadly rarely bite people. In fact, the sea snakes are generally quite docile. The title of most dangerous snake, i.e., the one that kills the most people, would go to different animals than those listed below. In the United States the coral snake has a very toxic venom but has killed few people because it is small, secretive and gentle. The most dangerous are the rattlesnakes like the Eastern and Western Diamondbacks. These rattlesnakes are large, have large venom glands, are relatively common, and are more likely to hold their ground and bite. In Africa common Egyptian Cobras, Saw-scaled Vipers, and Puff Adders would be the most dangerous for the same reasons listed for the rattlesnakes above. In Asia the common Cobra and the Russell's Viper are the snakes that kill the most people.

Widely distributed throughout Africa except in the deserts, mambas have extremely toxic venom. When attacking they raise the front of the body high off the ground and aim at the head or trunk of the victim. They do not have hoods (as do the Asian cobras), but some can inflate their necks in a threatening gesture. Members of some species are very aggressive, displaying a greater tendency to attack than do most snakes; nevertheless, their reaction to danger is often flight. The so-called black mamba ( Dendroaspis polylepis ), actually dark brown to gray, may grow up to 14 ft (4.3 m) long and is the most feared of the mambas. It lives mostly in open country and preys on small mammals and birds. The green mamba (

Green Mamba Capture Injury - Another load of snakes has been imported to Florida with the same type of highly traumatic capture injuries. Importers have been alerted to the identity of the exporter who is perpetrating the abuse. We are working hard to save as many of these animals as we can and to keep them comfortable. If you can help "adopt a mamba" please support us by purchasing one of our manuals or by making a donation. Click here if you can help or contact us directly by email . Click here to see a slideshow of the new patients and their progress. This female East African green mamba (Dendroaspis angusticeps) was severely injured during its capture for sale to the American wildlife trade. Injuries such as broken ribs, neck wounds made by crude wire capture nooses, broken jaws and deliberately torn-out fangs are commonly seen in such imported animals. Animals may be teased into biting an old shirt or a rag, which is then yanked out suddenly, ripping away the snake's deeply embedded fangs and sometimes parts of its jawbone. Both of this snake's lower jawbones are broken and exposed, and the ligament between them is torn. Later radiographs (x-rays) showed multiple fractures to the dental bone and lower jawbones. Caseated pus can be seen on the upper jaw being debrieded with a cotton swab. Both fangs are missing and there appears to be damage to the upper maxilla as well. Note the compromise to the right palatine artery. This structure also appeared to be slightly asymmetrical in our healthy control subject.

Western Green Mamba
(Dendroaspis viridis)
In the event of an actual or probable bite from a Western Green Mamba, execute the following first aid measures without delay. Snake:
  • Make sure that the responsible snake or snakes have been appropriately and safely contained, and are out of danger of inflicting any additional bites. Transportation:
  • Immediately call for transportation. Telephone: Victim:
  • Keep the victim calm and reassured. Allow him or her to lie flat and avoid as much movement as possible. If possible, allow the bitten limb to rest at a level lower than the victim's heart.
  • Immediately wrap a large crepe bandage snugly around the bitten limb starting at the site of the bite and working proximally up the limb (the full length if possible). The bandage should be as tight as one might bind a sprained ankle. (See attached copy from "First Aid for Snakebite" by Dr. S.K. Struan).
  • Secure the splint to the bandaged limb to keep the limb as rigid and unmoving as possible. Avoid bending or moving the limb excessively while applying the splint.
  • DO NOT remove the splint or bandages until the victim has reached the hospital and is receiving Antivenom.

"Today I had one of the most memorable days of my life." Next we were taken to the AFEW Giraffe Center, where we were privileged enough to pet and feed the giraffes. Most of us were even kissed by the giraffes, by tempting them with food of course. I had seen the Nature program on Giraffe Manor and never thought I would ever get the chance to actually visit this wonderful place. We had captured a giraffe in South Africa, so it was nice to play with them in a different setting. The last and most amazing part of the day, took place at the Daphne Sheldrick Trust. This wonderful set up is within Nairobi National Park, which is also very beautiful.
I had been waiting for this moment for many months. This courageous group of people takes in orphaned African elephants and black rhinos. Most are orphaned due to poaching or illness. While we visited there were five resident elephants, one baby rhino, and one juvenile rhino. The juvenile rhino came in while we waited for the elephants and we all sat in amazement as he passed so gracefully by. The elephants finally came in with there keepers, who stay with them at every moment of the day. They go on long walks through the national park, to keep them used to their natural environment. They feed and sleep with the elephants in their corals. The orphans are allowed to interact with other wild elephants, who teach them how to be an elephant. They stay at the trust until the age of two years and then are translocated to Tsavo National Park for the second round of rehabitualization. Here they are introduced into a herd where they create the bonds they need.

SNAKES Few people are neutral towards snakes. Feelings vary from the great love displayed by most snake-collectors to the more general fear and distaste, frequently bordering on revulsion. Ignorance and fallacy are often at the root of our distorted attitudes to these essentially shy and retiring creatures. Most snakes are not only harmless to man but actually assist us by helping to control potential rodent, bird and insect pests. Nevertheless, it is best to avoid snakes if you are not familiar with them nor certain of recognizing the more dangerous species. The Black Mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis) is perhaps the most feared and most notorious snake in southern Africa. Unlike its counterpart, the green mamba, which has never been found in the Park, it is widespread and common throughout the area. Despite the common name this mamba is never black, but generally grayish-brown above with a grayish-white belly. Adults more than four meters long have been recorded, but these were exceptional and a three-meter length is more common. The black mamba is one of the few snakes which are instinctively aggressive and will not hesitate to strike. Nevertheless, when disturbed and if given the opportunity, it will prefer to retreat to its lair.

Mambas, puff adders, boomslangs-Africa is home to some of the deadliest slithering reptiles in the world. No African safari is complete without the better part of one evening around the campfire being devoted to snake stories-the more frightening, the better. Africa is home to a variety of poisonous snakes. They range from the little Berg adder, which has a nip that may cause only localized pain and swelling, to the puff adder, whose lightning strike may not kill you but will certainly damage and disfigure you, to the mamba, which has a bite that will likely kill you within minutes. I grew up in Cape Town, South Africa. In my youth, mountaineering and hiking was an even greater passion than hunting. But during all my climbs and hikes, I can remember seeing a grand total of one horned adder and two Berg adders.
