BY PAUL CALLEJA. (OCTOBER, 2001) calleja@wiznet.net.au
While the storm over the criminal treatment of many child migrants blew over the latter half of the nineties little reference was made to the Maltese component of the child migrant scheme. The Maltese former child migrants have taken a back seat in the child migration debate, due largely to the fact that they were numerically small compared to the number of British children sent as child migrants to Australia. Experts on the child migration period differ widely on the number of children sent to Australia. Mr Alan Gill (Orphans of the Empire) claims that 30,000 children were sent between 1912 to the late 1960s. Professor Sherington (Submission No 119 - Lost Innocence - Australian Senate Report) claims 6,000 for the same period. There is a similar lack of consensus with the post - war estimates also. Here they range from the UK Health Committee report figures of 7,000 - 10,000 to Dr Barry Coldry`s estimates of 3,000 to 3,500 ( Submission No 13 - Lost Innocence - Australian Senate Report). Regardless of which sets of figures one accepts, the number of Maltese children sent to Australia is small compared to the British

By Celeste Bonnici
Malta has both a distinctive identity and a distinctive language; this is one reason why people choose to learn Maltese. Maltese is related to both the Arabic and the Romance languages causing Maltese to be a unique language. Also by learning Maltese, people are able to endorse self expression and it can also help with employment. By learning the Maltese language people are also able to learn about the culture and lifestyle of the Maltese people. Finally by learning Maltese an individual is able to learn about Malta's history.
The language of Maltese opens a window to many other languages. This is because it is related to most of the languages spoken in North Africa and there are approximately 200 of them spoken in countries such as Morocco, Kenya, Somalia, Egypt, Algeria and Ethiopia. Not only is Maltese related to these countries languages, but it is also related to the languages spoken in the Middle East, for example Iraq and Syria. All of the languages spoken in these countries belong to the Arabic family of languages, and thus the Maltese language is part of this family. Although unlike the other languages belonging to the Arabic family of languages, Maltese is also influenced and related to some of the languages spoken on the northern side of the Mediterranean Sea.
These include such languages as Portuguese, Catalan, Spanish, Italian, Latin and Romanian. All these languages belong to the family of Romance languages, which were originally spoken by the Romans, and so Malta does not only have a unique language but also a unique identity as it occupies a distinctive place in the Mediterranean because it is not only an Arabic language but also a Romance language. As Maltese is a language which is related to so many other languages, learning Maltese is able to be a stepping stone for learning many other languages.

About Malta Malta has often been referred to as the island of sunshine and history and with good reason. For, throughout your stay in Malta you will find a surfeit of both.
Malta's history was, in a sense, pre-destined for it by its excellent natural harbour and strategic location. The harbour provided a sheltered base for naval fleets whilst the island itself, situated at the cross-roads of the medierranean, enabled its colonising power to exercise control over shipping in this vast and turbulent sea. Hardly surprising therefore, that Malta has always exerted an irresistible attraction to the world military powers of successive epochs. Control over Malta was a prerequisite to domination of the Mediterranean and for this reason all the various powers that, at one time or other, held sway over the Mediterranean at the same time exercised control over Malta. The long list of Malta's colonizers, the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Norman's, Castillans, Knights of St. John, the French, and finally, the British is indicative of the important role Malta played in the moulding of European and Mediterranean history. The list of important visitors to the island, from the Apostle Paul to Napoleon and Nelson is equally impressive. It is no exaggeration therefore, that Malta's history is a good starting point for a study of the history of the region.

The Republic of Malta is an island community in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, due south of Sicily, and due north of Libya. It consists of three islands - Malta, Gozo and Comino. It is most famous for two landings and one attempted landing on its shores. The famous landing was by the Apostle Paul when he was shipwrecked on his way to Rome after he was arrested in Jerusalem. A snake jumped at him out of the fire soon after the crew and fellow prisoners landed. He suffered no ill effects, so the islanders where prepared to listen to him. Having ransacked Jerusalem, the Knights Templar returned from the first Crusade via Cyprus and Malta. The failed attempt at landing came in the Second World War, when the Germans tried to invade the island as it had key strategic significance being in the middle of the Mediterranean. However, the allied forces and Maltese were tough opposition and stood firm in the face of heavy bombardment. The result was that the people of Malta were the first of only two groups of people to be awarded the George Cross for Gallantry.

Sta Marija Convoy Surviving Crewmen for Malta Reunion Touching stories of war veterans by Fiona Galea Debono Times of Malta , Valetta, Malta, July 15, 2002 Melitensia and militaria enthusiast Simon Cusens has managed to track down around 200 surviving crewmen of the Sta Marija Convoy, many of whom, aged between 76 and 97, are due to visit Malta for the 60th anniversary commemoration of Operation Pedestal. The convoy consisted of 78 ships, including 14 merchant vessels, carrying vital supplies to Malta. Only five of the supply ships made it to their destination. As many as 23,000 men went to sea during Operation Pedestal, and over 500 perished in the attacks between August 11 and 15, 1942. The commemorative event, which is being held between September 24 and October 2 and includes an emotional reunion for surviving veterans, is being organised and sponsored by the Tourism Ministry. Avidly interested in Maltese history and also a collector of World War II documents, memorabilia and artifacts, Mr Cusens, who is a member of the Tourism Ministry's organising committee for the commemorative events, initiated his search for survivors after reading the book Malta Convoy. He found the epic particularly interesting because it incorporates both part of Malta's history and World War II heritage. The arrival of the convoy in Grand Harbour, which is to be re-enacted during the commemoration, not only saved Malta from planned surrender to the enemy, but also altered the course of World War II, according to some military historians.

Mein Malta

120. The Equestrian Order Of The Holy Sepulchre Of Jerusalem
The official establishment of a Magistral Delegation of this Order for malta was by a decree dated March 18, 1996.
http://malta.co.uk/KHS/
The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem was founded when Jerusalem was captured from the Muslims in 1099 in the first Crusade, specifically to defend and preserve the church that bears its name. A select number of his knights were installed in what remained of Constantine's original basilica of the Holy Sepulchre, the most cherished site of Christendom, to assist the few Canons Regular of the Order of St Augustine who used to take care of the church. The official establishment of a Magistral Delegation of this Order for Malta was by a decree dated March 18, 1996. The first-ever investiture in Malta of a number of Knights and a Dame in the Equestrian Order took place on the 14th September, 1996 at the Franciscan church of St Maria di Gesu (locally known as Ta' Giezu) in Valletta by His Eminence Carlo Cardinal Furno, the Order's Grand Master. I wish to announce that His Eminence Carlo Cardinal Furno the Grandmaster of our Order has elevated our Magistral Delegation to a full Lieutenancy of the Order. May I avail myself of this opportunity to convey my sincere congratulations to HE Com. Victor Licari Magistral Delegate soon to be the first Lieutenant of the Order for Malta.
