Being at the heart of the Mediterranean, with its natural harbour and strategic location, has meant that Malta;s history is a reflection of the history of the region, right from the early days of civilization up to the present times. Two important periods of cultural significance in Maltese history are the Neolithic period and the period of the Knights of St. John, who eventually came to be known as the Knights of Malta. , is an even more astonishing relic. The temple must have been literally carved into the rocks over hundreds of years with simple tools made from flint and obsidian. Starting at ground level, the Hypogeum descends several storeys below ground and covers an area of more than 500 sq metres.
In 1530 the Knights of St. John brought about another epoch of great cultural significance to the island. When the Suleiman the Magnificent ousted the Knights from Rhodes in 1522, they moved to Malta to which they were given tenure by Emperor Charles V. But Suleiman wanted to destroy the Order completely and use Malta as a base from which to attack Southern Europe, therefore in 1565 he set out with a strong fleet to drive the Knights out of Malta. The Great Siege of 1565 lasted four months, but the Knights finally won, assisted by the Maltese people and by last minute reinforcements from Sicily. After this victory the Knights could concentrate on the development of Malta and Gozo, which resulted in a golden era of culture, architecture and the arts. A new fortress city was built, and named Valletta in honour of Grandmaster La Valette. On 12

Back Malta Overview
Cradle of the Mediterranean
Malta has often been referred to as the island of sunshine and history. And with good reason too. For throughout your stay in Malta you will find plenty of both.
If you want to enjoy Malta, soak up its history. History, in Malta, stares you in the face everywhere you visit on the islands. The god thing is that you will enjoy its captivating intensity. Culture In 1530, many hundreds of years after the Neolithic period, the Knights of the order of St. John brought about another epoch of great cultural significance to the island. This is not to say that between the sudden disappearance of the Neolithic culture and the arrival of the Knights nothing happened. Quite the contrary. Many relics and remains bear witness to important historical events in this period. However, no unique or individual culture had originated from the many peoples - the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs, Normans, and Castilians - who colonized the island during this prolonged interval.
The history of the Knights of St. John begins in the middle of the 11th century in the Holy Land. The Order's original duties were to care for the sick and wounded Christian pilgrims to the Holy Land and to help the poor. But soon after, "infidels" became of equal or even greater importance. The Knights also became "Soldiers of Christ." They acquired and maintained huge estates and castles in the Holy Land and eventually owned a large fleet.

Throughout the year, the Malta Tourism Authority stages the re-enactment of historical military parades at Fort St. Elmo, titled In Guardia and dating back to the times of the Knights of St. John. During these parades, around 90 officers and men-at-arms accoutred in period costume will perform a series of military drills in the fort's "Place-of-Arms". The ceremonial includes marching, changing of the guard, manning of posts, orders of the day, musketry and gunnery drill, parade fall-in, presentation of arms and colours. "Feux de Joie" together with noon-day or curfew cannon shots, add to this unique spectacle. Malta was an important cultic center for earth-mother worship in the 4th millennium B.C. Recent archeological work shows a developed religious center there long before those of Sumer and Egypt. Malta's written history began well before the Christian era. Originally the Phoenicians, and later the Carthaginians, established ports and trading settlements on the island. During the second Punic War (218 B.C.), Malta became part of the Roman Empire. During Roman rule, in A.D. 60, Saint Paul was shipwrecked on Malta at a place now called St. Paul's Bay. In 533 A.D. Malta became part of the Byzantine Empire and in 870 came under Arab control. Arab occupation and rule left a strong imprint on Maltese life, customs, and language. The Arabs were driven out in 1090 by a band of Norman adventurers under Count Roger of Normandy, who had established a kingdom in southern Italy and Sicily. Malta thus became an appendage of Sicily for 440 years. During this period, Malta was sold and resold to various feudal lords and barons and was dominated successively by the rulers of Swabia, Aquitaine, Aragon, Castile, and Spain. In 1522 Suleiman II drove the Knights out of Rhodes. They dispersed to their commanderies in Europe and after repeated requests for territory to Charles V, in 1530 the Knights were given sovereignty of Malta under the suzerainty of the Kings of Sicily. In 1523, a key date in Maltese history, the islands were ceded by Charles V of Spain to the Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem. For the next 275 years, these famous "Knights of Malta" made the island their domain. They built towns, palaces, churches, gardens, and fortifications and embellished the island with numerous works of art and enhanced cultural heritage. In 1565 Suleiman the Magnificent laid siege to Malta. After several months the strength of the Knights and the Maltese population prevailed and the Turks were defeated. Over the years, the power of the Knights declined, however, and their rule of Malta ended with their peaceful surrender to Napoleon in 1798.

Malta Before the last British garrison left in 1979, Malta had already obtained independence (1964) and was developing export-oriented industries and 'off-shore' business facilities that would replace the income provided by military and naval connections. Although the country has enjoyed close links with the UK for 200 years, in recent years, close ties with North Africa, notably Libya, has contributed towards political division over the question of joining the EU. Nationalist Party Leader, Dr Eddie Fenech Adami, was sworn in as Prime Minister on 14 April 2003, following the March 8 referendum which was won by the "Yes to Europe" vote and the general elections, which were held on 12 April. The Prime Minister signed the European Accession Treaty in Athens, together with nine other acceding states, on 16 April 2003. Malta became an EU member on 1 May 2004. Standard of living Malta ranks as one of the less affluent of European countries. With a GDP per capita of approximately £6,885 (2003 figures) it is around half that of Germany, France and the UK.
