Foundation and Plans
5th April, 1930, Saturday. The foundation stone was laid in the afternoon by His Excellency the British Governor of the Maltese Islands, Sir John Du Cane in the presence of the Prime Minister Lord Gerald Strickland, the Minister of Health Professor Robert V. Galea, among other guests. The Rev. Calcedonio Schembri, the Parish Priest of Msida, blessed the stone. Architect Mr. H. Percy Adams F.R.I.B.A. was responsible for the plans of the Hospital. He was paid £6000 for preparing the plans and chose the Gwardamanga site in 1927 with accommodation for 480 beds. The original projected location was at the Mriehel archway. 3rd March 1932 the first stone of the central block was laid in. Progress in the construction of the hospital was slow. The war between Italy and Abyssinia in 1935 was another factor that reduced the rate of construction. saw the completion of several sections including the roofs in the central block and northwards; quarters for female nurses and nuns; laundry and parts of the Isolation Block .

Notable Dates in Malta's History
Before 5000 BC
Arrival of man in Malta. The first inhabitants of the islands of Malta are believed to have crossed over from Sicily. They brought with them their simple tools, corn seeds and domestic animals. These Neolithic settlers are believed to have traded with the Lipari Islands (North of Sicily), Pantelleria island (to the West of Malta) and Sicily itself for flint, stone and volcanic material that was not naturally available on Malta. Circa 3400 Circa 3200 Building of megalithic temples, the world’s oldest free standing buildings. Circa 2000 Invasion of bronze-using people. In the Bronze age, Malta probably experienced a cultural shift from the development of long established local cultures to what is believed to be the introduction of cultures by separate colonisations of Malta from elsewhere. Circa 900-800 The Iron Age.

GHAR DALAMF, or generations a grotto not far from the small town known today as Birzebbuga, was used by shepherds as a sheepfold. Little did they think that a few feet of earth under their animals' litters hid the very ancient history of their island? And then, one d ay in 1865, Arthur Issel, an English scientist, came to the archipelago looking for fossils.
Apart from confirming certain geological knowledge, the grotto of Ghar Dalam provided the very oldest evidence of man's presence on the island. The rock of the Maltese Islands consists of alluvial deposits from the tertiary era about fifty million years ago. As they hardened, these deposits imprisoned a vast number of shells, as can be seen from walking along the seashore, particularly below the cornice at Sliema. A million years ago, at the beginning of the ice age, gigantic erosion caused by torrential rains channelled the ground and began to form the relief. Scientists claim that at this epoch - the Pleistocene - the Maltese Islands were joined to Sicily and Africa and that the separation from Africa took place first. It is worth noting that, whereas the sea between the archipelago and the African continent s sometimes reaches depths of 400 fathoms, between and Sicily it never exceeds 70 fathoms.

Valletta - History An impressive and solemn ceremony of the laying of the foundation stone was held on 28 March 1566. The newly founded city of Valetta became the seat of power in 1571. Valletta boasts a unique mixture of splendid fortifications and elegant architecture - an architecture dominated by the Baroque and owing its harmonious appearance to its grid pattern studded with cathedrals, churches, palaces and secular buildings. Architects and engineers, painters and sculptors, master masons and artisans from all over Europe and the Maltese Islands constructed and embellished the City. click to go back

An Introduction to Maltese History and Culture
Albeit small Malta offers not only a kind climate but also a rich history dating back to 5200 years before Christ. For the cultured tourist Malta offers beautiful megalithic temples as well as beautiful churches and other interesting buildings. Then Malta got its first settlers - The Phoenicians. For a time the Phoenicians lived alongside Bronze-age man approximately 700 years before Christ. The Phoenicians did not live only on the coast but ventured inland and founded what today is known as Mdina. After the Phoenicians came the great empire builders - the Romans. It is said that Malta was much greener than it is today and it was the Phoenicians and the Romans who cut down all the trees to build their large ships. After the Romans came the Arabs in the year 870. Then came the Normans in 1090. It is said that our Maltese flag was given to the Maltese by Roger the Norman. Then came the Knights of the Order of St John in 1530. In 1798 came the French and finally in 1800 the British. The various dominations left their imprint on this tiny island. This is what accounts for Malta's rich history. In 1964 Malta became Independent and 10 years later in 1974 Malta became a Republic.

    http://www.smom.org/orderofmalta.html
The Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta, commonly known as the Order of Malta, traces its origins to Jerusalem where, before the First Crusade (1099), it was founded by its first rector, Blessed Gerard (died 1120) when the Holy City was recovered by the Christians. It is the fourth oldest religious order of Christendom, preceded only by the Basilians, the Augustinians and the Benedictines. Blessed Gerard founded a hospice-infirmary for pilgrims in Jerusalem, and that facility and an adjoining Church were dedicated to St. John the Baptist and ministered by a religious confraternity. By a Bull of 15 February 1113, Pope Paschal II approved the institution of the Hospital and placed it under the protection of the Holy See. By 1126, the Order underwent a transformation that was to mark its identity through succeeding centuries: the need of armed protection for the sick and the pilgrims and later for the defense of the Christian States in the Levant against Muslim attacks, induced the confraternity of the Hospital to assume military-chivalric functions in addition to its religious-hospitaller tasks. The Order constructed great fortresses at vulnerable points in the Kingdom of Jerusalem and launched its own military campaigns in the defense of Christendom. The Order became the first Western standing army and the first organization of chivalry. It expanded its network of hospices for service to and defense of pilgrims along important routes of travel.

The Pope John XXIII Peace Lab has been working for the last 25 years under the guidance of a friar, but it is run by a committee of lay people and not by the Province. One of its achievements has been the establishing of the Pope John XXIII Award for Kindness which is given every year. Other inititiatives of a more collective nature have been the telephone service known as Servizz Nisimghek which ran for 4 years every day between 6p.m. and 6a.m. This was run by a group of young friars.
