HISTORY
The University of Malta traces its origins to the founding of the Collegium Melitense in 1592. This college was run by the Jesuits and catered for non-Jesuit students. In 1578, Pope Gregory XIII empowered the Jesuits to confer the degrees of Magister Philosphiae and Doctor Divinitas. However, other subjects such as Grammar and the Humanities were also taught. Following the abatement of the plague of 1675, Grand Master Nicolò Cotoner appointed Fra Dr. Giuseppe Zammit as "lettore" in Anatomy and Surgery at the Sacra Infermeria on the 19th October 1676. Zammit went on to establish the first medical library on the island as well as a medicinal herbal garden in one of the ditches of Fort Saint Elmo. After the expulsion of the Jesuit Order from Malta in 1768, Grand Master Pinto appropriated all the revenue accruing from its property on the island and established a "Pubblica Università di Studi Generali". The decree constituting the University was signed by Pinto on the 22nd November 1769. Two years later, a Collegio Medici was set up as one of the faculties making up the University. It appears that the Medical Faculty was the only one staffed solely by local lecturers, a tradition which has been maintained through the centuries. During the brief French interregnum of 1798, Napoleon abolished the University. Fortunately, shortly after the French were forced to leave, Sir Alexander Ball re-instituted the University. During the British period the University's statutes and regulations were brought into line with universities in the United Kingdom. The present coat of arms and the motto "Ut Fructificemus Deo" were proposed in 1923 by the rector, Professor Sir Themistocles Zammit. Following the Second World War, the Library and support structures were strengthened. In 1968 a new Medical School was built near St Luke's Hospital in Guardamangia and, at the same time, the new campus at Msida was inaugurated.

This study traces the history of the musical chapel of the Cathedral of Malta from the first musical activities, at the end of the 16th century, up to the 18th century. This work is the result of systematic research carried out on the archival documents as well as on the printed and manuscript music sources. Taking into consideration other local and foreigner musical institutions which had many contacts with the Mdina Cathedral, the history of its music chapel offers an interesting example of a very well organised institution, constantly up to date on the most recent musical trends. September - an eventful month in Maltese history Four of the most notable events in Malta's history occurred during the month of September. On the 8th of September 1565 the Turkish army retreated from Malta following its defeat at the hands of the Maltese and the Knights in the Great Siege. On the same day but in 1943, during the Second World War, Fascist Italy surrendered to the allies, and the Italian fleet came to anchor in St. Paul's bay.The 8th of September is a Public Holiday in Malta, known as Victory Day On this day a "Regatta" (boat race) is held in the Grand Harbour. The magnificent Fort St. Angelo provides an imposing backdrop to the sleek and colourful Maltese boats. Rowing teams from the cities bordering the Grand Harbour, participate in a number of exciting races, marked by extreme rivalry between participating teams and their respective supporters.

A Maltese Profile: Located in the Mediterranean Sea roughly mid-point between Europe and Africa, Malta is one of the most densely populated countries in the world. The Maltese archipelago consisting of three islands, Malta, Gozo and Comino has a population of 366,000 living in an area of 313 square kilometers (121 square miles). Malta is the only English speaking country in all of the Mediterranean basin. Multi-lingual Malta has two official languages, Maltese (basically a Semitic tongue written in Roman script) and English. Italian is widely spoken with a good knowledge of French and German thrown in for good measure. Schooling is compulsory until age 16. The literacy rate has reached 96 percent. Roman Catholicism is established by law as the religion of Malta; however full liberty of conscience and freedom of worship are guaranteed, and a number of Christian and non-Christian faiths have places of worship on the island.
For so diminutive an island Malta has no equal in history. Maltese life and culture has been influenced in varying degrees by Arabs, Italians and the British. The written history of Malta began well before the Christian era as evidenced by many ancient one-of-a-kind temples still standing in Malta. Key events in Maltese history:

Updated 2 days 17 hours 32 minutes ago. Other descriptions of History of Malta Malta has been inhabited since around 5200 BC and a significant pre-historic civilisation existed on the islands prior to the arrival of the Phoenicians who named the main island Malat , meaning safe haven. The islands later came under the control of first Carthage 400 BC ) and then Rome 218 BC ). During Roman rule, in A.D. 60, Saint Paul was shipwrecked on Malta at a place now called St. Paul's Bay . Malta was conquered by Arabs in AD, who would greatly influence local culture, notably in the Maltese language . In they were finally replaced by the Sicilian Normans , namely by Roger I of Sicily , after which Malta became Christian again.

Brief History of the islands of Malta and Gozo
Author: Joseph Borg Malta is situated in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, halfway between Gibraltar and Alexandria, and Sicily and North Africa. Thus it has always been at the cross-roads of the trading and warring routes of this land-locked sea. Malta is chiefly composed of limestone with no hills higher than 300 metres and no rivers. On the South-West side it is guarded by high cliffs whilst on the North-East side the shore is indented with sheltered harbours. These proved to be very attractive to the sailors and navigators that sailed the Mediterranean. The origin of Maltese history goes back to some 4500 years BC, when some people from the neighbouring island of Sicily, who could see the island lying on the horizon, decided to cross the narrow waters to investigate. This obviously could not have happened unless these people had skills in sailing or rowing some form of craft which was large enough to carry with them their belongings, which included such animals as sheep, goats and cattle, as well as seeds like wheat and barley. These people settled on the island and sheltered in the many caves which exist there. The earliest inhabited cave is called 'Ghar-Dalam', the cave of darkness, where remains of these people and their artefacts give us an insight into their way of life. They cultivated the land, growing wheat and barley and practised animal husbandry.

... Books The world's oldest order of chivalry, the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes, and of Malta, more commonly known as the Order of Malta or simply the S.M.O.M. , has its origins in a hospice and confraternity in Jerusalem founded some time before the First Crusade (1099). According to most accounts, this was undertaken with the financial assistance of some wealthy merchants of the Italian port city of Amalfi to aid European pilgrims to the Holy Land. (The Amalfitans still commemorate their support of the Order in an annual observance.) The original Christian hospice may have been founded as early as circa 1020. The first rector of what was to become known as the "Order of the Hospital" was the Blessed Gerard. With his Bull of 15 February 1113, Pope Paschal II sanctioned the establishment of the Hospitallers' order, dedicated to its patron, Saint John the Baptist. The Pontiff placed the Order under the direct protection and ecclesiastical authority of the Holy See. Pope Callixtus and subsequent Pontiffs granted the Order additional privileges over the next century. Gerard himself died in 1120 but the work of the hospice, which at one point was said to house two thousand patients, continued. By 1126, the Order had begun its military role in the defence of pilgrims in the Holy Land, building castles and other fortifications throughout Palestine. Their seat was the vast Krak-des-Chevaliers, acquired in 1142. Built upon an older Arab structure, it was the knights' chief stronghold by 1144 and finally fell during a siege in 1271. The imposing fortress still stands today.
