POLITICAL HISTORY The end of the War found Malta, like the rest of Europe, physically and economically shattered. In proportion to the size of the population, loss of life had been high; Valletta and several of the larger cities were In ruins, roads and public services were badly damaged and the Harbour installations, so vital to Malta's commerce, had practically ceased to exist.
A new Constitution was granted Malta in 1947, with the franchise extended to all males and females over the age of 18. Malta's first Labour Government was elected and immediately undertook an extensive and long-overdue programme of social services, but the economic situation could not be improved to any great extent, particularly as Malta did not benefit directly from Marshall Aid.
the rundown of the British Services proceeded apace and discharges from the military and civilian establishments became the order of the day. Political unrest was again rampant and the issue was eventually crystallized into the alternative between Economic Integration with Britain and complete Independence. This led to the resignation of the Labour Government and the Constitution was suspended.
  • Fresh elections were held in 1962, Nationalist Government under Dr. George Borg Olivier was returned and immediately started negotiations with the British Government to obtain Independence, which was achieved on the 21 st September. 1964

HISTORY OF THE VFW CROSS OF MALTA
History indicates the Cross of Malta, the emblem of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States, is about 1,000 years old. Nearly ten centuries ago the Maltese Cross was made the symbol of fighting men who were united by a solemn pledge of comradeship to fight for freedom and to aid the sick and the needy. Those ancient obligations are still symbolized by the Cross of Malta today, for the more than two million American former servicemen who are the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The Cross of Malta is the symbol of their battles in time of war and of their campaign to defend the God given rights of human beings in time of peace. The Cross of Malta symbolizes the compassion, or sympathy, of those men and women for the needy. It is the sign of services which our contemporary veterans render to help make living a little better for everyone. To appreciate fully the original meaning of the Cross of Malta we must look back a thousand years, to the Crusaders serving in the Middle East. There we find the Knights of Saint John, the worlds first great brotherhood of warriors pledged to chivalry. The Knights of Saint John represented all walks of life. They were noblemen, priests, artisans, and laborers. Regardless of those differences, however, they were united by a solemn pledge of unwavering courage and compassion. Together they fought against oppression. The knights carried their crusades far from home across deserts and seas, into the Holy Land, Cyprus, Rhodes and Malta. At the same time they administered to the sick, the needy and to the poor. The Crusaders adopted the Cross of Malta as their insignia because its eight points represented the eight Beatitudes prescribed in the Sermon on the Mount. Those, in effect, declared:

The Malta Boy Scout Association was registered as a local branch of the British Association and consisted of 150 boys in 6 Scout Troops. The actions of the Boy Scouts during World War II, provides some of the brightest highlights of their history. Their bravery goes far beyond the Scout Oath and Law. The Scouts of Malta endured a heavier ordeal than any other association. They worked as coast watchers, messengers, telephone operators, in hospitals and those that were old enough, in the volunteer defense forces. They worked to unload ships while under heavy bombardment. The bravery of these Scouts during the frequent and constant air raids, became well know among the population. Early in the war, they adopted as their motto, "Scarred but not scared." One tribute to an unknown 17 year old Scout: "He held a lantern all night enabling men to extricate the persons buried under the debris of a bombed house to see their way and was killed later by a bomb which destroyed the room he was decorating for a children’s party."

Malta Time and Date Malta History Back to Top Malta was an valuable cultic center for earth-mother worship in the 4th millennium B.C. Recent archeological work shows a developed religious center there long before those of Sumer and Egypt. Malta's written history began well before the Christian era. Originally the Phoenicians, and later the Carthaginians, accomplished ports and trading settlements on the island. During the second Punic War (218 B.C.), Malta became part of the Roman Empire. During Roman rule, in A.D. 60, Saint Paul was shipwrecked on Malta at a place now called St. Paul's Bay. The people of Malta rose against French rule, which lasted 2 years, and with the help of the British evicted them in 1800. In 1814, Malta voluntarily became part of the British Empire. Under the United Kingdom, the island became a military and naval fortress, the headquarters of the British Mediterranean fleet. During World War II, Malta survived relentless raids from German and Italian military forces (1940-43). In recognition, King George VI in 1942 awarded the George Cross "to the island fortress of Maltaits people and defenders." President Franklin Roosevelt, describing the wartime time, called Malta "one tiny bright flame in the darkness." Malta obtained freedom on September 21, 1964.

    Malta History
Malta Through the Ages The Knights of Malta Palace of Grand Masters It is only befitting that I start our journey into Malta with that for which it is most renowned - The Order of St. John of Jerusalem . It was in 1113 AD following the capture of Jerusalem by the Christians that Pope Paschal II granted Brother Gerard de Saxo, founder and provost of the Hospital in Jerusalem, the Charter of incorporation of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem or more commonly referred to as the Hospitallers of Jerusalem . From this Order came a sub group of warriors called the Knights Templars. In 1291, the Knights were forced to Cyprus by their Moslem adversaries. Bound by the monastic vows of Chastity, Obedience, and Poverty, they soon found the temptations for power eroding the Order and in 1308 AD found the ideal home in the Byzantine island of Rhodes. During this period they were called Knights of Rhodes. This is the true basis behind the folklore surrounding the Maltese Falcon and the classic Humphrey Bogart film of the same name. After 400 years in the eastern Mediterranean as hospitallers initially caring for pilgrims during the Crusades, the Knights arrived in Malta in 1530 through this very harbor and became known as the

    CIVIL HISTORY
The principal and almost the only monument of the Arab dominion is said to be the Maltese language, which is Semitic and has much in common with Arabic. The weight of the best authority seems, however, to incline decidedly to the view that the present Maltese language is directly descended from the Phoenician with but little modification by the Arabic. The Arabs, in fact, seem to have left the Maltese very much to themselves and to have interfered with their language as little as they interfered with their religion and their popular customs. The account of the capture of Malta by the Normans, as given by Mataterra, the secretary of Count Roger, does not, certainly, convey the idea that the Saracens were sufficiently numerous to offer any serious resistance to the invaders. If the Arab influence had prevailed so far as to make a complete change in the language of the islanders, this could only have been the sequel to a process of denationalization which had no counterpart in the neighbouring island of Sicily and which would have implied the presence of a strong army of occupation. History and philology alike point to the conclusion that the Maltese, in spite of powerful outside influences, are still substantially, a Phoenician people. Count Roger of Sicily, who landed in Malta in 1090, was welcomed, it seems, not as a deliverer from an oppressive yoke, but because the islanders naturally preferred a
