Conference Exploring malta s Prehistoric Temple Culture Early in 2002, Greekarchaeologists found a stone seal that dates to the 5th millennium BCE.

Issue A023 of 29 September 2002
Conference: Exploring Malta's Prehistoric Temple Culture 25, 26, 27, September 2003 at the DePorres Cultural Center in Sliema, Malta Website: http://www.otsf.org/EMPTC-conference.html The purpose of the conference is to encourage a broad examination of the megalithic monuments and related artifacts of Malta and Gozo from a variety of fields of research. The goal is to fill some of the gaps in understanding who these amazing prehistoric people were and what happened to them. It is further suggested that relationships between various aspects of the Maltese material and the antiquity of other regions may reveal pattern and association. The EMPTC conference will provide a meeting place for professionals and scholars from a variety of disciplines including Archaeology and Anthropology, History and Prehistory, the Physical and Social Sciences, Mythology and Folklore, Philosophy and Religion. The intent is to facilitate multi-disciplinary exchange of studies as focused on a common interest: identifying and understanding the Neolithic "Temple Culture" of the Maltese Islands. There has been a tendency to assume that the (Neolithic Maltese) islands were completely isolated, apart from the import of a few raw materials. It is high time that a more balanced assessment, under the headings architectural, religious and commercial, should be attempted.

Malta site explained It wasn't little green men, just farmers scratching a living Maev Kennedy Arts and heritage correspondent
The mystery of a prehistoric site cited as, variously, a launch pad for little green men or the tracks leading to Atlantis, could be finally solved. Known as the Maltese Clapham Junction, the expanse of scrubby fields and barren rock is a bewilder ing complex of tracks believed to be up to 6,000 years old, gouged into solid limestone of the island whose megalithic temples are the oldest stone buildings in the world. Now an Australian archaeologist, inspired by the evidence of the Aran Islands off the west coast of Ireland, has demolished both the myths and the con ventional explanations. Claudia Sagona, from Birmingham University, suggests the site may be simply a relic of stone age agricultural enterprise. Like Stonehenge and Avebury, the Maltese temples are magnets for alternative theories and new age believers, who see the island as a centre of goddess worship, and the builders as creators of solar, lunar or star observatories or giant stone calenders. The tracks which can be seen all over the island, forming a traffic jam at Clapham Junction, have been called "cart ruts". Failing any expert agreement, alternative theories have rushed in to fill the void. The wildest include the tracks of outer space landing craft, or coded messages to the gods scrawled in runes across the landscape. Because in places the tracks plunge into the sea they have also been embraced as evidence that Malta was the lost Atlantis.

The word megalith comes from the Ancient Greek megas meaning large , and lithos meaning stone " The construction tools available at the time were hand-axes made of flint and quartzite, knives and scrapers of volcanic obsidian, wedges of wood and stone, hammers of stone and levers of wood. No metal tools of any kind have been found at the temples. Malta has no mineral resources and the flint and obsidian found on Malta and Gozo were most probably imported from the islands of Lipari (north of Sicily) and Pantelleria (south-west of Sicily). After the great blocks of stone were quarried they were transported with rollers and levers to the temple sites. At the building sites, the rollers were exchanged for stone balls so that the massive blocks of stone could be moved in any direction, rather than the forward and backward motion possible with rollers."

Hey, someone else gets it, too How Often Is Atlantis Discovered?
American architect-turned-archaeologist Robert Sarmast claims to have discovered the lost city of Atlantis, off the southeast coast of Cyprus. Sarmast says his latest sonar readings reveal submerged walls that closely resemble those described by Plato, the first person to ever mention Atlantis in print. In Timaeus, written around 360 B.C., the renowned philosopher portrayed Atlantis as "a great and wonderful empire" that was destroyed by earthquakes and floods in a 24-hour span. How many times have researchers previously claimed to have discovered the vanished island-state?
Oodles—and that's not even counting the numerous psychics and crackpot "Atlantologists" who've placed the city everywhere from Nicaragua to Ceylon.
Archaeology: Exotic Life of Ancient Thrace

A series of spectacular discoveries at three sites in central and eastern Bulgaria has highlighted the exotic lifestyle of the ancient Thracians as never before.
Georgi Kitov, a veteran Thrakologist who has excavated more than 30 tombs built for the ancient warrior elite, says that the Thracians were known for drinking undiluted strong red wine and were famous for their martial skills. They were the most successful gladiators in ancient Rome.

Title: Punic Antiquities of Malta and Other Ancient Artefacts Held in Ecclesiastic and Private Collections, Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Supplement 10
Author: Claudia Sagona
Date: 2003
Publisher: Peeters
Pages: 374 pages
ISBN: 90-429-1353-3 The Phoenicians, the sea masters of antiquity, left behind an enormous legacy. An outstanding feature of their legacy is their expansion into the Western Mediterranean and the foundation of colonies that had all the characteristics of eastern cities - they stood on promontories or islets just off the coast and provided convenient ports of call. Malta, a small island in the Mediterranean sea, provides the scholar with an excellent opportunity to study the entire spectrum of Phoenician cultural expansion and development. Archaeologist Claudia Sagona, who has already published an extensive study of the Phoenician colonisation of Malta ( The Archaeology of Punic Malta , 2002: Peeters) dates the arrival of the Phoenicians on Malta to c.1000 BC. The Phoenician-Punic legacy in Malta finds its largest expression in the pottery assemblage, which has attracted antiquarian interest since the 17th century. Phoenician and Punic pottery is found in significant quantities in public and ecclesiastical museums and private collections. However, modern scholarship concerning Malta has been hampered by the lack of properly studied and published material.

Author : Dr Christopher Chippendale

Overview
: When the first edition of Stonehenge Complete was published, it won the British Archaeological Book Award and was immediately hailed as the ideal intorduction to this most famous and mysterious of all Europe's ancient sites. People have puzzled over Stonehenge for centuries: speculating and dreaming about it, drawing and painting it, trying to make sense of it. Here is the story of the one real Stonehenge, as well as the many unreal Stonehenges that archaeologists, tourists, mystics, astronomers, artists, poets and visionaries have made out of it. This new edition has been completely revisd and updated to include the latest theories and discoveries, bringing the Stonehenge story into the 1990s.
Review : (Aubrey Burl) "Splendidly illustrated...will for years to come be a standard reference work."
