Your browser does not support javascript Celebrating an Island Heritage Volume 50 Number 4, July/August 1997 by Mark Rose The Neolithic temple of Hagar Qim, Malta (Mark Rose) [LARGER IMAGE] The seventeenth-century antiquarian Gian Francesco Abela, vice-chancellor of the Knights of St. John, has been called the Father of Maltese Historiography for his Descrittione di Malta (1647), and the Founder of the Malta Museum for his antiquities collection, which he willed to the College of Jesuit Fathers in Valletta, stipulating that the objects be kept "in perpetuo...a benefitio de curiosi antiquarii." In 1902 construction workers discovered an underground burial complex, the Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, and emptied most of its 32 chambers of bones, dumping them in nearby fields. The Maltese archaeologist Themistocles Zammitt conducted a clean-up excavation at the Hypogeum a few years later, recovering pottery, stone tools, beads and pendants, and figurines of people and animals. Because of these efforts and his excavations at the Tarxien temples from 1915 to 1919, Zammitt earned the epithet Father of Maltese prehistory. After Zammitt, however, Maltese archaeology faltered and work on the islands was dominated by British and Italian scholars. Today, Maltese archaeology is experiencing a rebirth.

Architectural heritage abounds in Malta's capital, Valletta, from baroque churches and sixteenth-century fortifications, to more recent historical structures, such as this modern gun emplacement which has been converted into a restaurant. While such artifacts were of interest, the megalithic temples on the two largest islands, Malta and neighboring Gozo, were of wonder. Early speculation about these Late Neolithic (3500 to 2500 B.C.) temples ran wild. In 1647, the antiquarian Gian Francesco Abela, vice-chancellor of the Knights, wrote that they were built by a race of giants descended from Noah. Jean Houel, an artist in Louis XVI's court, declared in 1787 that they were Phoenician, while Charles de Brochtorff, who painted the Ggantija temple and excavated at Xaghra in the 1820s called them "druidical." Despite an 1854 attempt by to claim them, and the Maltese islands, as remnants of Atlantis, by the end of the nineteenth century the temples were recognized as prehistoric structures. If the Malta's monuments needed any international acknowledgment to mark their significance, that came in the closing decades of the last century. In 1980, UNESCO entered on its World Heritage list two Neolithic sitesthe Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, a subterranean burial complex, and Ggantija, one of the megalithic temples. In 1992, this entry was renamed "The Megalithic Temples of Malta" and expanded to include the temples of Hagar Qim, Mnajdra, Tarxien, Ta'Hagrat (also known as Mgarr), and Skorba. Also placed on the World Heritage list in 1980 was Valletta, the nation's capital. Valletta, named for the head of the Knights of Malta who led defense against the Turkish siege in 1565, is an architectural gem of baroque buildings and unparalleled bastions and ramparts. Sonnini called the Grand Harbor of Valletta "one of the largest and most beautiful in the universe" and claimed that the "fortifications which defend the port and city are the best in the world."

Brochtorff Circle, Gozo, Malta
The Brochtorff Circle through history
Since the late 18th century the curious megalithic stone circle and the Ggantija temple on the Xaghra plateau of Gozo have been recorded by European travellers. In the 1820s, the Lieutenant Governor of Gozo, Otto Bayer conducted an "excavation" at the circle which was recorded by the local artist Charles de Brochtorff in 1825. Bayer unearthed a deep hole containing large megalithic structures. By the late 1830s, the site was filled and forgotten, and even the megalithic stones were removed from the circle. If it had not been for the paintings and drawings left behind by Charles de Brochtorff then memory of the site may well have been lost forever. Charles de Brochtorff painted the Circle at Xaghra, (in 1825)
showing the great stone entrance.
The stone circle had enclosed a ritual area, entered through a huge stone entrance which led the mourners across a stone threshold and probably down steps into the rugged caves. At the centre, was an area enclosed by elegant megalithic trilithon altars and a massive stone bowl. The many natural caverns and niches of the caves were divided off by walls and stone slabs. Line drawing of the stone circle on the Xaghra plateau by Charles de Brochtorff.

The prehistoric temples of Malta are unique in all the world. They are the oldest standing stone structures which remain to us from ancient times. The temples date from 4000 - 2500 BC. They are older than Stonehenge, older than the Pyramids. Their architecture is beautiful and inspiring, their scale impressive yet human. Excellently preserved, they were covered with soil from early times and ignored by the long march of history. They were rediscovered and carefully restored by European and native Maltese archaeologists beginning in the 19th century. Because of their uniqueness and beauty, the major temple complexes are deservedly designated as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The worship of a Mother Goddess is usually associated with female priestesses, although male figures which may represent priests have also been found. Did individual worshippers participate in ceremonies related to important events in their lives - birth, puberty, marriage, sickness, death? Did community leaders consult the temples about planting and sowing, community disputes, food stores, or new settlements? Were the temple leaders also the political rulers of the community? People are still searching for answers to questions such as these, for the first inhabitants of Malta left no writing behind them when they vanished, as mysteriously as they had first appeared, sometime around 2500 BC.

    Archaeology in Malta and Gozo Some of the oldest temples known are found in Malta and Gozo. The following is a brief description;
For more details, please see list at the bottom.
  • Hagar Qim
The original temple was subject to many alterations, but the complex presents many novelties in construction, together with carvings bearing a unique foral motif.
  • Entirely built of the soft globigerina limestone, it contains the largest single stone used in any of the Maltese temples
  • Mnajdra Temple
can be found a short distance from Hagar Qim and is currently undergoing restoration. The Hypogeum - Paola
This is an ancient underground monument[circa 2,400 BC], 12 metres below street level. It consists of a system of caves, passages and cubicles cut into the stone, similar to the interiors of megalithic temples. Megalithic Monuments - Tarxien
The remains of numerous temples erected in the Fourth and Third Millennium BC are unique in the world. Stone idols, animal representations carved in relief, stone tablets, altars and screens decorated with spirals and other patterns, fire places, ornamented niches and oracular chambers enhance the attraction of these sanctuaries.
Ghar Dalam (Cave and Museum) - Birzebbuga
This cave is a veritable depository of semi-fossilized remains and extinct species such as dwarf elephants and hippopotami which roamed the island some 250,000 years ago, ostensibly when it was still part of the Africa land mass.

    VALLETTA
Valletta, the capital was built by Jean de la Valette, French Grand Master of the Order of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, after the epic siege of 1565. It dominates, in one wide sweep, the Island's historic Grand Harbour - one of the finest natural ports in Europe. Within its limited boundaries, the city reflects some of Malta's rich heritage of archaeology, history, architecture, art and culture. Viewing is essential. It's also worth spending a good part of a morning walking round this beautiful city. A camera would come in handy, particularly for the views on both sides of Valletta from the streets, which are laid out in a grid-like fashion. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes to provide sustinence during your visit.
More details at Restaurants Places of interest worth visiting are:
  • The National Museum of Archaeology . The more important collections covering Maltese archaeology are housed in the Auberge de Provence, Valletta, one of the Inns of the Knights of St John. Collections of prehistoric pottery, sculpture, statuettes, stone implements and personal ornaments recovered from the Maltese megalithic temples and other pre-historic sites are exhibited. Typical examples of tomb furniture of the Punic and Roman periods are also displayed. After two years of refurbishment, the Museum now boasts new prehistoric galleries . In addition to these galleries, the Museum will eventually have floors dedicated to the Bronze, Punic, Roman, Byzantine, Baroque and modern ages.
