http://www.neh.gov/news/humanities/1998-07/sundiata.html
Mali's Boy-King: A Thirteenth-Century African Epic Becomes Digital By Ronica Roth The story begins with a hunter visiting the court of Mali. He tells the king of Mali his future: if the king takes as his second wife an ugly woman who will arrive at the court in the company of two hunters, the king will have a second son “who will make the name of Mali immortal forever.” It is the epic of Sundiata, a story passed down for seven hundred years and now being converted to CD-ROM. Sundiata was the boy-king who overcame great hardship to found the Mali empire in thirteenth-century West Africa. His story was put on paper by Djibril Tamsir Niane in 1960 in French. The new digital version is being prepared by scholars from Tufts University, funded by an NEH Teaching with Technology grant. For years, Lynda Shaffer and Parker James have taught the Sundiata epic as a centerpiece to a West African unit in a world civilizations course at Tufts. “First-time readers are captivated by it, and those of us who have read it many times still enjoy reading it again,” says Shaffer, who is the project director. She said that she and James, who is serving as production director, have found the text to be an excellent introduction to West Africa’s history and culture, as separate from the rest of Africa and other parts of the world. “We want the CD-ROM to be content-driven and need-driven,” Shaffer says. “The need is for a West African context for the epic. We want to give teachers the confidence to teach West Africa in their world history or world literature courses.”

    History Of Mali
Mali (03/05) Mali's per capita gross domestic product (GDP) of $250 (2002) places it among the world's 10 poorest nations. Its potential wealth lies in mining and the production of agricultural commodities, livestock, and fish. Agricultural activities occupy 70% of Mali's labor force and provide 36% of the GDP. Cotton, gold, and livestock made up 80%-90% of total export earnings in Mali in 2003. Smallscale traditional farming dominates the agricultural sector, with subsistence farmingof cereals, primarily sorghum, millet, and maizeon about 90% of the 1.4 million hectares (3.4 million acres) under cultivation. The high cost of petroleum products, the fall in the world market price for cotton and gold, and corresponding loss of customs revenues put pressure on the economy and led the government to be very tight on cash disbursements in recent years. In addition, the 2002-03 closure of the main import/export route to the port of Abidjan increased the pressure on the fragile Malian economy. Non ... [ Read More Mali Federal Register Notice, 1997

Archaeological findings throughout the area indicate that Senegal was inhabited in prehistoric times. Islam established itself in the Senegal River valley in the 11th century; 95% of Senegalese today are Muslims. In the 13th and 14th centuries, the area came under the influence of the Mandingo empires to the east; the Jolof Empire of Senegal also was founded during this time. In January 1959, Senegal and the French Soudan merged to form the Mali Federation, which became fully independent on June 20, 1960, as a result of the independence and the transfer of power agreement signed with France on April 4, 1960. Due to internal political difficulties, the Federation broke up on August 20, 1960. Senegal and Soudan (renamed the Republic of Mali) proclaimed independence. Leopold Sedar Senghor, internationally known poet, politician, and statesman, was elected Senegal's first President in August 1960. The Socialist Party dominated the National Assembly until April 2001, when in free and fair legislative elections, President Wade’s coalition won a majority (89 of 120 seats). The Cour de Cassation (Highest Appeals Court, equivalent to the U.S. Supreme Court) and the Constitutional Council, the justices of which are named by the president, are the nation's highest tribunals. Senegal is divided into 11 administrative regions, each headed by a governor appointed by and responsible to the president. The law on decentralization, which came into effect in January 1997, distributed significant central government authority to regional assemblies.

    Prime Minister Mande Sidibe,
    Ministers,
High Commissioner of the District of Bamako, Mr Ismail Cisse,
Mayor of Bamako, Mr Ibrahima N'Diaye,
    Esteemed guests,
Ladies and Gentlemen. It is our privilege and honour to be here this evening. On behalf of the people of South Africa, I would like to express our pleasure at having been invited to visit your country. Since our arrival in Mali, we have been overwhelmed by the warmth of Malian hospitality, so much so that we feel we are truly among friends. Our visit is both to renew and consolidate our ties and friendship. In a sense, we are on a pilgrimage to this ancient place, to this home of some of the greatest leaders of Africa and strongest empires of our rich African history. We are here to pay homage to these centres of spiritual, intellectual and commercial excellence that gave birth to great scholars, artists, poets, philosophers, traders, entrepreneurs and through their exemplary work, shaped Africa of the past. I am sure that everyone in my delegation is truly humbled to be in a fellow African country which has made these immeasurable contributions to the advances, not only of Africans, but of the rest of humanity.

    Introduction
In addition to its specific activities in Mali and the Casamance region of Senegal, the regional delegation continued its cooperation with the National Societies of the region, conducting dissemination sessions for various target groups, encouraging instruction in humanitarian law, and on a practical level, helping to fight epidemics of cholera, promote public health and give first-aid training to local volunteers.
    Cape Verde
Following an ICRC mission to Cape Verde, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs deposited the instruments of accession to Additional Protocols I and II with the Swiss government on 16 March 1995. The government of Cape Verde also made a declaration recognizing the competence of the International Fact-Finding Commission.
Gambia A new attempted counter-coup on 27January resulted in the imprisonment of a number of people accused of being involved, including the Vice-President and the Minister of the Interior. The ICRC visited 24 individuals arrested in this connection and a further 80 security detainees held at Mile 2 prison and in hospitals and barracks for reasons related to events in 1994. Guinea Bissau The regional delegate went on mission to Guinea-Bissau in mid-September in order to establish contact with the government and the National Society, particularly with the aim of reactivating the latter and enhancing its management structure.
