Andalucian government projects to construct library in Mali to preserve manuscripts on Muslim presence in Andalucia
Regional, History, 7/2/2002 The Andalucian government is projecting to finance the construction of a library in Timbuktu, Mali, to preserve some 3,000 manuscripts related to the Muslim presence in Andalucia (southern Spain).
The city of Timbuktu harbors manuscripts of great historical value, related to the Muslim presence in Andalucia, said the Andalucian department of institutional relations.
The project was discussed at a meeting in Seville last week between regional minister and director of the Malian Fondo Kati library, Ismael Diadie.
Several intellectuals of international standing, including Literature Nobel Prize Jose Saramago, and Spanish writer, Juan Goytisolo, had called in a manifesto released recently for the preservation of these valuable manuscripts. Previous Stories:

Seeking and locating the criminals involved poses problems relating to information exchange, international identification and arrests with a view to extradition. This is why Interpol-in accordance with Article 2 (1) of its Constitution-ensures the closest possible co-operation between the criminal police authorities of all member countries, including those in Africa. Crime is not associated with a particular region and is certainly not a problem for Africa alone. Ever since it was established, the International Criminal Police Organization - Interpol has been seen by countries all over the world as an institution whose principles and objectives correspond to universal aspirations for human rights, public safety and the fight against ordinary law crime.

General Information The Spaniards used the island of Hispaniola (of which Haiti is the western part and the Dominican Republic the eastern) as a launching point from which to explore the rest of the Western Hemisphere. French buccaneers later used the western third of the island as a point from which to harass English and Spanish ships. In 1697, Spain ceded the western third of Hispaniola to France. As piracy was gradually suppressed, some French adventurers became planters, making Saint Domingue, as the French portion of the island was known, the "pearl of the Antilles"one of the richest colonies in the 18th century French empire.
During this period, African slaves were brought to work on sugarcane and coffee plantations. In 1791, the slave population revoltedled by Toussaint L'Ouverture, Jean Jacques Dessalines, and Henri Christopheand gained control of the northern part of the French colony, waging a war of attrition against the French.
By January 1804, local forces defeated an army sent by Napoleon Bonaparte, established independence from France, and renamed the area Haiti. The impending defeat of the French in Haiti is widely credited with contributing to Napoleon's decision to sell the Louisiana territory to the United States in 1803. Haiti is the world's oldest black republic and the second-oldest republic in the Western Hemisphere, after the United States. Although Haiti actively assisted the independence movements of many Latin American countries, the independent nation of former slaves was excluded from the hemisphere's first regional meeting of independent nations, in Panama in 1826, and did not receive U.S. diplomatic recognition until 1862.

Bahru Zewde
Today is a day of special significance. After the lapse of over a quarter of a century, African historians are assembled once again, here in Bamako, to exchange ideas and compare experiences. They are gathered to rededicate themselves to the continental association that was born in 1972. Tribute is thus due to the Association of Historians of Mali and to its president, Professor Doulaye Konate, who have worked so hard to make this eventuality possible. We owe special thanks too to the President of the Republic of Mali, His Excellency Alpha Oumar Konare, who has given unstinting support to the Association to make this day possible. As we rededicate ourselves to our continental association, it is fitting to reflect on the state of African historiography – its genesis and its evolution. What I intend to do in this introductory speech is to highlight some of its major achievements, to identify the constraints it faces at present and to indicate the challenges of the future. In a conference that has as its theme “African Historians in the Era of Globalisation,” it is appropriate that we begin by outlining the global context within which African historiography has been operating. There is a fair consensus that academic or professional historiography as we know it today began in Europe in the nineteenth century. The name that is closely associated with that development is that of the German historian, Leopold Von Ranke. Two major features have characterized that historiography: archival research as the basis for original historical reconstruction and the academic journal as the medium for the dissemination of research findings.

Mali Although politically and economically stable with a democratically elected government, Mali is one of the poorest countries in the world. One particular area of concern for the government is the country's education system. School enrollment and retention rates remain low, particularly in the north. In response, Catholic Relief Services is implementing a Food Assisted Education Support Project in over 70 primary schools in the Mopti region. CRS targeted this region of Mali because of its low enrollment and retention rates and chronic food insecurity. The Food Assisted Education Project focuses on increasing girls' school enrollment, encouraging parent participation and community management of food distributions, and adding much-needed foods to the local diet. CRS field staff work closely with communities to implement the project. Our Work At A Glance
The main goal of CRS' program in Mali is to increase school enrollment/attendance for food insecure children in the Mopti region through the Food Assisted Education Support Project
  • "In the schools that I monitor, the enrollment rates have doubled, and in some cases, especially for girls, tripled, thanks to CRS' take-home food rations and awareness-raising sessions."

This segment explores the Mali Empire of West Africa, which arose between 1200 and 1400 in the kingdom of Ghana. Oral tradition records that a powerful leader, named Sunjata, unified the Mali Empire, and that the empire grew rich and powerful from trade conducted across the vast expanse of the Sahara desert. Indeed, merchants traveled long distances to trade iron products, salt, and gold in Mali's markets. Although the Mali Empire collapsed in the mid-fifteenth century, during its existence it provided a conduit for the exchange of ideas, religions, and commodities, and connected people across the vast inland ocean of the Sahara.

West African Kingdoms by: Donavan Duncan It is generally accepted by scholars and scientists today that Africa is the continent where humankind first saw the light of day. Indeed, it is widely recognized as the original home of man. One of the most tragic misconceptions of historical thought has been the belief that Black Africa had no history before European colonization. Whites foster the image of Africa as a barbarous and savage continent torn by tribal warfare for centuries. It was a common assumption of nineteenth-century European and American Whites - promoted by the deliberate cultivation of pseudoscientific racism - that Africans were inferior to Whites and were devoid of any trace of civilization or culture. It is only recently that more reliable studies has brought to light much information about great civilizations that developed in Africa while Europe was in the period often referred as the Dark Ages. The earliest of these mature civilizations were in West Africa. In a vast region south of the Sahara, Africans organized kingdoms which in time became great empires. This region is called the Sudan (a word meaning "land of the Blacks" in Arabic) The Sudan was important in the early history of Black Africa because the Africans first practiced agriculture in this region, and thus became the first people south of the Sahara to fashion and use iron tools and weapons. They were also among the first people in Africa to organize viable political systems. The Sudanic Blacks had learn to domesticate crops long before the coming of Christianity, and their grain production furnished food for an expanding population.

The manuscripts shed light on African history and have potential to influence contemporary Malian society and the world beyond. They hold tremendous scholarly, diplomatic as well as economic significance.
1. Scholarly Significance of the Manuscripts To this day there are living scholars in Timbuktu descended from a long lineage dedicated to the preservation, study and teaching of the manuscripts. These scholars belong to the ‘Circle of Knowledge’ a centuries-old committee comprised of the most knowledgeable Muslim Imams, scholars, and professors in Timbuktu. Also known as 'Ambassadors of Peace' they are best equipped to interpret the manuscripts for our times. These living scholars possess the deepest understanding of manuscripts content and are convinced that their potential usefulness to pressing social issues in Mali have not yet been tapped.
Charles C. Stewart, History Professor at the University of Illinois, USA, noted that materials like those uncovered in Mali support scholars who battle the older image of Africa as a continent where civilization was unknown before the coming of the European. They are the building blocks for redressing the racism still inherent in many Westerner’s views of Africa.
