The premier resource for all things African Culture: Festival in the Desert - Mali Issue 26 The desert night was electric with anticipation. Swathed in indigo robes and beaming with pride, the revolutionary Tuareg guitar group Tinariwen had taken to the stage. As they launched into song there was an uproar of cheers from the eager crowd. Every man, woman and child could sing at least some of the words, as they danced with wild abandon amongst the sweeping sand dunes of the Sahara Desert.
For some four decades, the northern desert region of Mali was wracked by civil war, drought and poverty. Following a return to peace, the Festival was created as a Tuareg initiative to promote the richness of their culture and encourage much needed development in the area. Last year an audience from all over Europe and North America joined locals to enjoy performances from bands such as Robert Plant, Oumou Sangare, Ali Farka Touré and Lojo.
Lasting three days, the Festival of the Desert is a magical mêlée of camel racing, sword fighting, feasting and fantasia. The dramatic opening ceremony witnesses hundreds of camels galloping in welcome beside arriving cars, while the cool, tranquil nights resound to the hypnotic beat of tindé drums.

Though West Africans love and revere their musicians, they have not always granted them high social status. A griot may provide the soul of a good wedding party, but he can also be seen as a hustler, and nobody you'd want your daughter to marry. As in other regions of the continent, many a West African star's story begins with the tale of how he or she studied and played music despite parental objections. And frequently, success involved a period of exile. Though Britain and France have long withdrawn from West Africa, their capitals, London and Paris, have provided a vital pathway for musicians in search of an international career. As musicians have moved back and forth, cultural dialogue has continued, and the cities have become important production centers. Meanwhile, West Africa has built up its own studios and production facilities, especially in Lagos, Nigeria, Dakar, Senegal, and Abidjan, Ivory Coast, the region's recording industry capital. Tuesday, 13 February, 2001, 14:41 GMT Thousands celebrate hunting in Mali
Many people fear the hunters
By Joan Baxter in Mali They were taking pot-shots at the heavens even before they reached the presidential palace in the Malian capital, Bamako. Thousands of men, armed with home-made shotguns or bows and arrows, their mud cloth outfits weighted down with fetishes, were on the march. Traffic came to a standstill on the steep, winding road. The invaders came from the far-flung corners of Mali, as well as Burkina Faso, Guinea, Niger and Senegal. Outside the palace gates, some danced, while the trigger-happy continued to shoot at the sky. One man wrestled a hyena on a leash, while others showed off their pythons, which were allowed to slither around the gardens.
Traditional hunting is about much more than killing animals. Hunters are healers, they are diviners

Summer 2005
Drew University is pleased to offer a unique summer study program that allows a firsthand exploration of the culture, traditions, and arts of West Africa. Since 1984, several hundred students have benefitted from Drew in West Africa, taking courses in African studies, art, and art history. Students are introduced to the ways in which art reflects the social, economic, and cultural changes taking place in modern Africa. We invite you to join us for an extraordinary summer one that will leave you excited by Africa and touched by its customs and people. The Program
July 10 to August 5, 2005
Mali is an extraordinary country, extending from the savannah to the edge of the Sahara, with thousands of miles of extraordinary landscapes, ranging from the Dogon cliffs to the scenic Niger River Delta. Mali still contains many vestiges of the period when it was the center of great medieval empires.
The program begins in the capital city of Bamako with a general orientation and introduction to the art and culture of contemporary Mali and to the cultures of its many peoples, particularly the Bamana, Dogon, and Tuareg. The group then travels to interior regions, visiting villages where traditional life remains vigorous. Throughout, particular attention is given to local art and its relationship to the culture producing it. In addition, emphasis is placed on discussions with Malians.

Return to text
As for intentional looting, however, it is motivated by the search for - and acquisition of - cultural objects in order to build a personal collection or else to sell. As stated earlier it goes back to colonial times but its increase is very recent. Initially limited to wooden masks and statuettes acquired because of conversion to Islam or quite simply stolen, the phenomenon has grown throughout the country since the 1970s to include artefacts buried in the ground. This is owing to a combination of two factors: the discovery of terracotta statuettes from Djenné and the impoverishment of rural populations caused by the great drought. Since the 1970s several forms of intentional looting have been observed, of which the collection of surface finds from archaeological sites seems to be the most innocent. It is directed towards material exposed by water running over the surface of sites: jewels (beads in a variety of materials, copper and iron bracelets and rings), ceramics (complete vases or fragments destined to be used as grog), querns and stone grinders. Such collecting is in general practised by women and children in the area of the delta and across the mouth of the Niger. Initially geared towards the satisfaction of local needs, it has recently opened up to the international trade in beads and copper objects which are sold in markets at Léré in the lake region and at Gao. This new orientation will obviously lead to the disappearance of this innocent collecting and drag it inevitably towards increased 'hole-digging'.

Description: This unique field-study program uses visual and performing arts as a cross-cultural tool and a means of self-expression. Students become familiar with contemporary Malian life which is influenced by ongoing traditions from the 12th century and earlier, Islam, and the complexity of globalization. The heart of the program is the three-week apprenticeship where students will have the unique opportunity to apprentice with an artist, artisan, musician or dancer in accordance with their own particular interests. The apprenticeship is followed by an additional three weeks of guided independent study within their interest. The program consists of four courses totaling 16 semester credits: Culture and Contemporary Life in Mali, Aesthetic Traditions of Mali, Apprenticeship/Arts Practicum and French Language Intensive. Highlights: Once in Mali the group will settle in Bamako but will also spend time visiting the Niger River towns of Segou, Mopti, and Djenne as well as the unique Dogon communities along the Bandiagara cliffs. Mopti, lying on the inland delta, is one of the biggest cities along the Niger River with one of the most vibrant ports and a large bustling market. Djenne has been an important center of commerce and learning since the middle ages. It's a sister city to Timbuktu and is a major craft center. The Dogon, well known for their artwork, have a remarkable and rich culture as well as a spectacular physical environment. They have resisted outside influence more than other Malian ethnic groups. This is reflected in their architecture, their artwork and by the famed Dogon dancers.
