The decline of Mali was rapid, although the kings continued to rule until 1645. Its place was taken by the Songhoi Empire of Gao, whose great kings were Sunni Ali from 1464 to 1492, and Askia Muhammad, from 1493 to 1528. At its greatest extent, Songhoi reached from the Atlantic to Kano and included most modern Mali and parts of Guinea. The river Niger, which winds through the country up to the Sahara, along with its seasonally flooding shorelines, provides farmers with arable land. Timbuktu has been a magnet for travelers for many years. Le Main de Fatma is a giant rock formation bursting out of the ground like an enormous hand near Hombori village 250 km southwest of Gao, and is featured on many tourist posters. This offers the best technical rock climbing in West Africa (some say the world). Halfway up the cliff is the original village of Teli, one of a score of such places where the Dogons retreated 700 years ago. When the Dogons arrived, many of these easily defended sites were already occupied by the Tellem people of which little known except that they were excellent climbers and of small stature. Mali is the heir to a great historical tradition. A series of powerful empires carried this name in the past, even though not all fell within the present borders of the country. MANSA KANKAN MUSA - EMPEROR OF MALI was one of the most renowned of all the monarchs of the old Sudan. The Emperor claimed that the length of his realm was "about one year". The high point of the empire occurred in the 16th century thanks to a very busy gold trade. France found it hard and long to conquer Mali, and the army had to engage a full scale war which lasted 15 years to overcome the resistence of the last tribes.

West African Kingdoms by: Donavan Duncan It is generally accepted by scholars and scientists today that Africa is the continent where humankind first saw the light of day. Indeed, it is widely recognized as the original home of man. One of the most tragic misconceptions of historical thought has been the belief that Black Africa had no history before European colonization. Whites foster the image of Africa as a barbarous and savage continent torn by tribal warfare for centuries. It was a common assumption of nineteenth-century European and American Whites - promoted by the deliberate cultivation of pseudoscientific racism - that Africans were inferior to Whites and were devoid of any trace of civilization or culture. It is only recently that more reliable studies has brought to light much information about great civilizations that developed in Africa while Europe was in the period often referred as the Dark Ages. The earliest of these mature civilizations were in West Africa. In a vast region south of the Sahara, Africans organized kingdoms which in time became great empires. This region is called the Sudan (a word meaning "land of the Blacks" in Arabic) The Sudan was important in the early history of Black Africa because the Africans first practiced agriculture in this region, and thus became the first people south of the Sahara to fashion and use iron tools and weapons. They were also among the first people in Africa to organize viable political systems. The Sudanic Blacks had learn to domesticate crops long before the coming of Christianity, and their grain production furnished food for an expanding population.

    Mali Africa
CULTURE In spite of being one of the poorest nations in the world, Mali has long functioned as a crossroads between northern and western Africa and has developed a rich cultural tradition. Situated between the Arab world to the north and the black African nations to the south, it has for centuries been a cultural meeting place. Music and dancing are the most common cultural activities; they form an especially rich heritage among the Malinke and Songhai peoples. The Bambara and the Voltaic groups excel in the creation of wood carvings of masks, statues, stools, and objects used in animist worship. The tiewara, or gazelle mask, of the Bambara is remarkable for its fineness of line.

Join us as we explore the rich history of this ancient land, home to some of Africa's greatest empires, among them those of Ghana, which flourished between the ninth and eleventh centuries A.D.; Mali, which reached its apogee in the late fourteenth century; and Songhai, which dominated the region between the mid-fifteenth and late sixteenth centuries. Independent since 1960, Mali was formerly part of colonial French Sudan, which also comprised what are now the countries of Senegal and Burkina Faso, the latter formerly known as Upper Volta.

But what will be the impact of the slowly increasing number of travellers who are making the trek across this harsh landscape to see the legendary cliff-side villages? To find out, Philip Briggs ventured
It was a moment of supreme unreality. Guided by a propulsive, relentless drum rhythm, we ascended a steep flight of stone steps into a scene so overpoweringly bizarre that we felt as if we had stumbled into the midst of an ancient Inca sun ceremony, or an assemblage of Greek Gods preparing for war below Mount Olympus.
The 300m-high cliffs of the Bandiagara Escarpment glowed golden before us, their surface pocked with a veritable warren of centuries-old cave dwellings. At the base of this vast sandstone amphitheatre stood thousands of children and colourfully dressed women, captivated by a troupe of outrageously masked awa dancers, who leaped and bounded in and out of the crowd as they re-enacted key episodes in Dogon history.
Only that morning, we had set off on a circular hike from the small town of Sanga through the villages of Ireli, Amani, Tereli and Daga in the remote Dogon Country of southern Mali. We selected Ireli as our first overnight stop on the basis of rumours that a festival might take place there. Nothing, however, had prepared us for this, the awesome climax of the ancient Dama festival.
