Mali is a landlocked country situated in West Africa. It has land borders with Algeria in the north and northwest, Niger in the east and south, Burkina Fasso and Ivory Coast in the south, Guinea to the southwest, Senegal to the west and Mauritania to the west and northwest.
Two massifs dominate Mali, which is served by two rivers - the Niger and Senegal and their tributaries. The republic is divided into three natural zones; the Sudanese, an area of cultivation covering some 200,000 sq. km (77,220 sq. mi) in the south and in the Niger delta; the Sahelian and the Saharan. In the southwest are the mountains of the Futa Jallon, which rise 600-700 meters (1,970-2,300 ft) and are deeply notched by valleys. The second massif, in the circle formed by the Niger River, is virtually a plateau and rests on the sandstone base.

Malians are friendly, easygoing people whose eagerness to share their rich and varied culture and traditions embraces students from the moment they arrive. Although the country is poor, the openness and generosity of its people are overwhelming. Mali's history is alive in places like Timbuktu, Djenne, and Kangaba. Many students are surprised and intrigued to learn that Mali's adventurous past dates to Abu Bakari II's 1311 expedition to the New World. Visiting the striking landscape and experiencing the culture of the cliff-dwelling Dogon people leaves students with indelible memories. A semester in Mali is an unforgettable experience.
Comments from Former Students
"Mali's people live in the fourth-poorest country in the world, but they are filled with hope for their future. They share with one another, and their overriding value is for relationships between one another. What a great place to go for Americans who lead busy lives and sometimes forget the value of a small gesture called a smile."

Art and Culture in Mali, West Africa
Program Description
This is unique field-study program uses visual and performing arts to develop cross-cultural understanding, critical thinking, and a foundation for better understanding of both American and Malian culture. Using art as a cross-cultural tool and a means of self-expression, students become familiar with contemporary Malian life which is influenced by ongoing traditions from the 12th century and earlier, Islam, the fading but ever close presence of colonialism, the persistent reality of contemporary neo-colonialism, and the complexity of globalization. By focusing on the intermingling of these traditional and contemporary issues, the Art and Culture in Mali, West Africa program offers a context within which the student is immersed in Malian culture and way of life. Online: Online Inquiry Form About Academics Admissions ... Campus Resources Past Program Sites Include: Bamako Bamako, the capital of Mali, is one of the rare African cities to harmoniously integrate both modern and traditional life. The city is composed of old buildings of colonial style (neo-classic and neo-Sudanese) built between 1890 and 1914. It is the nation's administrative center. Bamako University includes schools of administration, medicine, and engineering. Most of all, Bamako is a large market where people come to trade, establish business ties, meet friends and family, or just stroll. It is a cacophony of music, traffic and crowds of people buying and selling under the hot midday sun. Siby Located 50km south west of Bamako in the Manding Mountains, Siby is the site of the historic founding of the ancient empire of Mali. The epic poem "Sundiata" chronicles the life of Sundiata Keita (ca. 1210-1260), the son of the king who defeated the Ghanaian king Sumanguru and founded the empire of Mali. It is close to Kangaba, another very important site in the history of the Malian Empire. High cliffs with beautiful rock formations and vigorous waterfalls make this an appropriate and relaxing place to begin the program. Segou Segou was the capital of the eighteenth-century Bamana Empire, whose influence stretched from the Senegal River to Timbuktu. The French took the city in 1892, using it as an administrative center. The Niger River is wide and beautiful at Segou. Though traditional Bamana architecture can be found throughout town, the oldest remains can be found in Segou-Koro (old Segou) five miles west of the modern city. The Segou region is home to many artisan's potters, weavers, blacksmiths, and wood workers.

Exploring Mali Exploring Mali Africa Homepage Geographia Home A lthough it cannot compete with the major safari countries for sheer natural spectacle, Mali is a nation of unusual interest and charm. Like Egypt, Mali is a country that is intimately related to a great riverin this case, the Niger. In addition, Mali is the location of some of the continent's most interesting cultural sites. Legendary Timbuktu is located here, and in the center of the country is the magnificently dramatic Bandiagara escarpment, home to the fascinating culture of the Dogon. Mali, the largest country in West Africa, is bordered by seven other states: Algeria lies to the north and northeast, Niger to the east, Burkina Faso to the southeast and, with the Ivory Coast, to the south. On the west are Senegal and Mauritania. Although most of Mali experiences only negligible rainfall, the 'rainy' season in the south extends from June through September. A In the late nineteenth century, Mali became a French colony, and in 1960 it became independent. The country has suffered from periods of internal and external strife, as well as from an extended drought in the early 1970s, but today it appears to by moving toward a stable, multi-party democratic government.

http://www.africatravelling.net/mali/bamako/bamako_culture.htm
Bamako - Culture Modern-day Mali with ( Bamako as a capital ) evolved out of a long, illustrious history of vast and culturally rich empires centred around the lush inland delta of the Niger River. At its peak, the medieval Mali empire was the one of the world's chief gold suppliers. Tombouctou, gateway to the Sahara Desert, was a renowned centre for trade, culture and Islamic learning. The fabled city was home to one of the largest libraries in the world. Mali is a landlocked country of 11 million people in the heart of West Africa. Traditionally the commercial centre of the region, Mali is bordered by the present-day countries of Mauritania and Senegal to the West; Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire, and Burkina-Faso to the South; Niger to the East; and Algeria across the northern expanses of the Sahara. Mali is nearly twice the size of Texas. The terrain is predominately savanna and sand-covered plains; 65 percent of the country is desert or semi-desert. The Niger River flows through the heart of the country, flooding annually and creating pasture land for livestock. The river forms a magnificent inland delta across an alluvial plain supporting unique and lush vegetation for six months of the year. T he French colonized much of West Africa in the late 19th century, but left little mark on present-day Mali. Malians won their independence in 1960, but Sahel-wide droughts in the early 1970s and again in the early 1980s, severely eroded the country's agriculture-based economy. In 1992, citizens voted in Mali's first civilian government. Today the government works to put the country on secure economic footings, focusing on food security, natural resource development, environmental protection and education. Still, Mali today is one of the world's poorest countries, with an annual per capita income of $260 (1991, CARE-Mali). Eighty percent of Malians rely on the land for their livelihood. Most are farmers who practice rain-fed agriculture on small landholdings, many raise livestock and some earn their living from fishing the Niger, Senegal, Bani and other rivers.
