Maldives Resorts Briefing Diving Zone/MAP Safari Boats ... Diving Safaris There are many words in Dhivehi used to describe an island. A "fushi" is a big island usually on the outside reef of the Atoll. Meerufenfushi, Kandoomafushi, and Farukolhufushi are examples. A "finolhu" is an island with few or no coconut palms. Islands like Dhigufinolhu, Kanifinolhu and Emboodhoofinolhu have grown in size early times but have retained their names, despite having many more coconut palms. "Dhoo" and "Huraa" are other words for an island and "le" , as in "Male' and "Hulhule", is a contraction of the sanskrit word "liu" , meaning island. Reefs are usually called "farus" or "falhus" . A "faru" , is a reef partially exposed at low tide and a "falhu" is often a reef encircling a lagoon. sometimes with one or more islands inside. "Gaa" and "Haa"

Maldives 5th edition v2.0
The highest point in the Maldives stands just 1.5m above sea level and many islands in the group were devastated by flooding and tidal waves, particularly along the exposed east coast. Although tourism the main industry in the islands has bounced back quickly from the disaster, the United Nations predicts that the Maldives will suffer the worst economic impact of any affected country. The reconstruction effort faces a significant shortfall in funding and many islanders remain in temporary accommodation, which is contributing to rising tension between displaced islanders and host communities. RECOVERY The emergency relief effort has thus far been remarkably successful, though the effects are disproportionately skewed towards areas likely to be visited by tourists. Essential services and food and water supplies were quickly restored after the disaster and the majority of the resorts are now operating as normal.

Over the last year the government has established regional development and management offices in the Northern and Southern Development Regions, which include three and four atolls respectively.
The national perspective
With regional development as the foundation of the process, there is also the question of overall economic development. The Maldivian economy is based on two principal industries: fisheries and tourism, both of which rely almost completely on the international economy for their growth and development. They are also the largest employers and the source of livelihood for the large majority. But they are, nonetheless, fragile.

CLIMATE
The climate of Maldives is warm year round, determined by the monsoons. However, being on the equator, the monsoons are mild and not as defined as in neighbouring countries. Of the two monsoons, the south west monsoon from May to October, brings more rain and wind. The north east monsoon, from November to April, is the dry season with very little wind. The temperature varies little with an annual average daily maximum of 30.4 degrees Celsius and the minimum at 2.4 degrees Celsius. The annual rainfall stood at just over 1,600 millimetres in 1992. In the same year, the country, with the equator running through it, had over 2700 hours of sunshine. 1984-1995 Average:
  • annual rainfall 1918.5 mm
