by DAYAN CANDAPPA Maldivian soldiers clear debris on the tsunami hit island Guraiudhoo in Maldives on January 9, 2005. MALE, Maldives (9 Jan 2005) Standing on the rock that is the Maldives' highest point and looking down on the Indian Ocean less than 3 metres (10 feet) below, it is easy to see why this nation of low-lying atolls fears rising sea-levels will one day wipe it off the map. What is less easy to understand is why that nightmare did not become a reality the day after Christmas when a giant tsunami crushed fishing villages and tourist resorts across Asia. Thanks to a combination of geography and planning, the death toll in the Maldives stands at just 80 in a disaster that claimed more than 150,000 lives from Indonesia to Somalia. That is not to say the remote, idyllic island chain famed for its pristine white sand beaches and some of the world's best scuba diving escaped lightly. "Some of the places I've visited look like they've been hit by a nuclear bomb," said Tom Bergmann-Harris, head of the United Nations Children's Fund in the Maldives.

INTRODUCTION The famous explorer Marco Polo referred to the Maldives as the 'flower of the Indies,' while the great traveler Ibn Batuta called her 'one of the wonders of the world.' The archipelago of Maldives has been a constant source of attraction to many tourists all over the globe. Its golden beaches, washed by the azure waters of the Indian Ocean, are enticing to one who loves to venture into the sea. Location of Maldives Maldives is a group of coral islands that stretch along the 73rd meridian between latitudes 0°42' south and 8°10' north. The shortest distance from the mainland of India is 350 km and from Sri Lanka 740 km. The islands lie in the northern Indian Ocean and the sea area is approximately 107,500 sq km. There are some 1,200 islands in the country, 202 of which are inhabited. The archipelago is 823 km long and 130 km at its greatest width. The islands are formed into 26 natural atolls but they are divided into 19 administrative regions, also known as "atolls." Climate of Maldives Generally, the year is divided into two monsoon periods: the northeast monsoon or Iruvai lasts from December to March, which are the drier months; the southwest monsoon or Hulhangu lasts from April to November, which are wetter, with more storms and occasional strong winds. Daytime temperatures are about 28°C throughout the year. The humidity is slightly lower in the dry season but on most days, there is a cool sea breeze.

The Maldives is an archipelago of about 1190 islands grouped into natural coral atolls.
One would expect the Indian Ocean, like any of the other oceans of the world to have its share of storms, waves and other phenomena related to large bodies of water. The Indian Ocean does fulfill this expectation till one begins to approach any of the coral atolls right in the middle of it.
An atoll is best visualized as a series of concentric layers. The outermost layer of the atoll is a strong reef. Composed of coral debris and living and living coral, this reef is a formidable barrier against rough seas. Once you gain access into the calm waters within, one is within the lagoon of the atoll proper.
The islands of the atoll follow the outer reef. Sometimes an occasional island juts up from inside the lagoon.
Each island has its own fringing reef. This adds to the protection. The water within this reef is often quite shallow. That aquamarine halo around the island in your picture postcard is this.

ATOLL FORMATION
The atolls of the Maldives are formed from coral structures, separated by lagoons. The atolls are in fact part of a greater structure known as the Laccadives-Chagos Ridge, which stretches over 2000 kilometres. The islands are low lying with the highest point at approximately 8 feet above sea level. 'Faru' or ring-shaped reef structures form the atolls and these reefs provide natural defense against wind and wave action, on these delicate islands. Kirsten Magasdi visited the archipelago for BBC World's Fast Track programme.
Inaccessibility of some islands will hamper repair schedules The island nation's economy relies more heavily on tourism than any other tsunami-affected country. Nowhere else is more aware of the threat posed by rising seas than the Maldives. About 99% of its territory is sea - and on the 1,200 low-lying coral islands that straddle the equator, nowhere is more than one-and-a-half metres above sea level. Flooded The country campaigns against the effects of climate change to protect its very survival, but the tsunami made it face its worst fears. Geography in Maldives
Maldives is one of the smaller countries in Asia and consists of a string of 1190 islands, grouped into 26 atolls (an atoll is a ring-like coral formation enclosing a salt water lagoon), stretched across the equator in the Indian Ocean, off the southern coast of India. The archipelago stretches 820 Kilometers from North to South and 130 kilometers from East to West at its widest point. The islands were formed from the tips of a chain of volcanic mountains rising from the ocean floor, and have been built up by coral for centuries. The highest point is only 6 feet above sea level; thus the sea is always a threat and the capital is surrounded by a sea wall to prevent inundation. While the country consists of 1190 islands, only about 200 are inhabited and 87 of those are solely tourist resorts, as tourism is the country’s main economy. The Maldives have been in the path of trade between East and West for centuries; thus their inhabitants and their culture is a mix of many influences. As is to be expected, trade and commerce account for some of the islands’ revenues. The Maldives have a tropical climate with hot and humid weather; however, the islands are surrounded by the ocean and breezes cool the land. The islands are in the Asian monsoon weather system and receive lots of rainy during the June to August rainy season.
