A string of “pearls” scattered over a carpet that is the deep blue Indian Ocean - the first glimpse you get of this fascinating atoll formation confirms two unique aspects of the Republic of Maldives: not only does it consist of the most beautiful tropical islands, but 99% of its 90.000 km² surface area is covered by the sea. 1,190 islands are spread over 26 atolls natural atolls, ring-like coral formations enclosing a lagoon, which gives the Maldives its unique appearance. They stretch for about 820 km from North to South, 130 km from East to West at the widest point and do not exceed a length of 4.5 miles or an altitude of 6 feet above sea level. No more than 200 islands are inhabited, another 87 islands are dedicated as tourist resorts and the rest are all uninhabited islands, some of which are used for drying fish or other agricultural activities. The capital Malé, the seat of government and the centre of trade, commerce, business, health and education, is located at the southern tip of the northern portion of Male’ atoll, a small island buzzing with the sounds and activities of about 75.000 people which is about one third of the population of the Maldives.

Introduction History Culture Economy ... Shop Maldives Geography The sea covers 99% of the Maldives and inside its blue depths lies the mysteries and riddles related to the formation of the Maldives. The islands are formed around a ring shaped coral reef encircling a lagoon. This reef structure, typical of Maldives, is called an atoll. In fact, the English word 'atoll' itself is derived from the Maldivian or dhivehi word for it-atholhu. There are 26 natural atolls in the Maldives. There are still ongoing debates about the formation of atolls. According to Charles Darwin's theory, when submerged volcanoes rise from the sea, a coral reef grew on its edge. When the volcanoes submerged, the coral reefs encircling a water-filled basin remained. Consequently, islands were formed on the reefs as the tides and currents brought dead coral onto sandbars. These were in turn colonised by plants. Islands of the Maldives are vulnarable to climate change A different view has been provided by Hans Hass. According to him, layers of coral reefs might have built up on top of the submerged mountains until they rose to the surface. The hardest and highest corals remained while the weaker corals in the center of the coral platforms broke down. The remaining corals at the outer edges formed rings that were to form the outer rims of atolls. Islands were formed as debris and sand accumulated on to the remaining reefs.

The Maldives is located in the Indian Ocean between 72 degrees 33' 40" East to 73 degrees 45' 20" East and 7 degrees 06' 38" North to degrees 42' 31" South. The country is formed into 26 natural atolls of varying size. The atolls of the Maldives are formed from coral structures, separated by lagoons. The atolls are in fact part of a greater structure known as the Laccadives-Chagos Ridge, which stretches over 2000 kilometers. As suggested by Darwin, coral atolls are formed by the total disappearance of a volcanic mass beneath the sea and continued upward growth of coral reefs on this volcanic basement, resulting in the formation of a coral atoll or in local terms, 'atholhu'. Exactly how the atolls were formed is still unresolved. All of the islands are surrounded by natural reefs, which serve as the only protection against rough seas. Though our islands are protected by coral reefs with the help of storms, winds and waves; inevitably some are washed away. If, as some scientists predict, the sea level continues to rise as a result of global warming, then Maldives, with its ancient and unique culture, may all be swept away within fifty years. Ocean currents, storms and monsoon changes alter the shape and size of the islands sometimes resulting in the complete formation of new islands. For instance, The island of Udhafushi was formed during the monsoon storms that hit the country in 1987. The island of Aahura in Shaviyani Atoll too was formed during a 1955 storm, which swept through most of the northern atolls. This is part of the mystique of traveling through Maldives, where you may come across an island which has no name, is not shown on any map and has no human footprint on its shores.

W HERE is the Maldives? The group of 1,200 islands lies in the Indian Ocean, between just south of the equator and 8 degrees north, about 675 km south-west of Sri Lanka. About 200 islands are inhabited. The total area including land and sea is about 90,000 square km. The archipelago is 823 km long and 130 km at its greatest width. The islands are formed into 26 natural atolls but they are divided into 19 administrative regions, also known as "atolls." Every atoll of the archipelago is enclosed by a fringing coral reef that has a few deep, natural channels serving as entry points. Likewise, a protective coral reef surrounds each island. Most islands have a shallow lagoon, known in Maldivian as a "villu." The islands are very small and low-lying with many being no more than two meters above sea level. Common features are tall coconut palms, white sandy beaches and crystal clear lagoons. The protective coral reef surrounding every island is also home to hundreds of species of tropical fish, countless shapes and sizes of coral sea shell shells and all forms of marine life. The islands are formed from the growth of coral over long-submerged mountain ranges. These are true coral islands, with no other forms of rocks or or minerals visible or within easy reach. As a result, beaches are covered with white coral sand with no trace of yellow or black as seen anywhere else in the world.
